Deported for exercising First Amendment rights (yes, even foreign students have them). That's a police state, folks.

If you accept that non-citizens have no right to due process, you are accepting that citizens have no right to due process. All the government has to do is claim that you are not a citizen; without due process you have no chance to prove the contrary.

I may be mistaken, but I don’t think most Americans thought they were voting for a foreign policy where Russia is our boss and Canada is our enemy. Yet that’s what we’re getting.

The lesson Trump learned right away in his first term is that accountability gives permission to the media to cover the story as a scandal while stonewalling with lies and denials prompts the media to move on and say the story is over

What possible non-treasonous reason would there be for Hegseth to have a Russian email address?

My grandparents were natural born German citizens. Until they weren't. I have copies of their documents, stamped "cancelled" by the government.

Trump's executive order tonight has illegally cancelled union contracts for 67% of the federal workforce & 75% of unionized federal employees — roughly 700,000 union workers This may be the single biggest attack on the labor movement in American history

If you damage the businesses of the richest man in the world, his friend the President wants to put you in indentured servitude in another country. If you trash the Capitol to overturn the election, its pardons and praise.

This kind of thing is one of the many reasons to love the verge.

Rubio’s position seems to be: - We get to say who is a terrorist. Our decision is final. It can’t be challenged. Just trust us. - Once we decide you are a terrorist, we can immediately deport you. No judges. - After we deport you, we can make you rot in a foreign prison. No criminal charges needed.

Wow

I decided to start a #thread 🧵 of stories about legal residents and tourists being (illegally) arrested, detained and/or deported by the Trump regime. I'll only post stories from serious sources, as rumors and conspiracies are really not needed in this authoritarian moment.

Dear Friends and Colleagues: I write with great sadness to say that I have had to change my travel plans and will not be able to join you for the conference to which you had so kindly invited me. I will unfortunately be cancelling all planned visits to the USA. /1

Le Monde reporting that a French scientist traveling to Houston to attend a conference was denied entry to US after a search of his phone & computer revealed messages critical of Trump's science cuts, "which [says CPB] conveyed hatred of Trump & could be qualified as terrorism". Computer confiscated

Last week, I gave a talk about how we can improve the design of open source software at FOSS Backstage Design in Berlin. Here's the video. www.youtube.com/watch?v=12TJ...

They want the unreviewable power to grab people and render them to a foreign gulag.

"I don't care what the judges think" should be grounds for impeachment for any public official, but especially for key actors in the national security system.

Language used by individuals associated with the federal government who deported people without trial or due process to a concentration camp in El Salvador, defying a court order, has a specific resonance that, historically, has been used to change regime type. snyder.substack.com/p/the-evil-a...

Once you establish that people can be punished because the administration doesn't like their speech, expanding the bounds of who can be treated that way becomes inevitable.

The people Attorney General Bondi is calling “terrorists” have had no trial and no chance to defend themselves. We do not know who they are. Ignoring the Constitution does not make us safe. It puts us all in peril.

When I said I was worried about Tyranny I meant the government doing mild health insurance reform. I have no problem with them illegally snatching and disappearing people

Killing off our research facilities and talent pipelines is perhaps the biggest, dumbest self-own in American history.

as the journalism saying (not quite) goes: When a dog bites a man, that is not news, because it happens so often. But if a dog shoots a man, that is news www.theguardian.com/...

@gruber.foo feedback for the most recent episode of Upgrade - you said that to build a data center for AI you can’t beat Nvidia chips. That’s true if we’re only talking about commercially available chips, but the best AI chips are for-purpose like Google’s TPUs (though Nvidia is competitive).

The ADL celebrates the Trump admin orchestrating the disappearance of a permanent resident and his transportation across state lines as retaliation for his politics

In a shocking turn of events, many of the people who said they wanted "free speech" actually just wanted to be the ones in charge of which speech is free.

And in the last day, Musk said people protesting Tesla were paid by Jews (some dead) with foreign connections, and separately blamed NGOs for causing the country’s problems. Again, this is copied directly from the playbook used by Orban and Putin to criminalize dissent and dismantle civil society.

“They are in charge of their own destiny and understand every aspect of the product decisions they're making.” One of our incredible Acquisition Specialists, Randy Hart, has a great story about our partnership with the US Tax Court.

Apparently making a bid for the record for the largest number of illegal and unconstitutional declarations to be fit inside just one short social media post

NEW: Trudeau says if US tariffs come into effect tonight, Canada will, effective 12:01 am EST tmrw, respond w/ 25% tariffs against $155 billion of US goods starting w/ $30 billion worth immediately, $125 billion in 21 days’ time. Canada's tariffs will remain in place until US trade action withdrawn

JFC. Like, literally, USAID was the counter to the Belt and Road Initiative, and removing it has opened up all sorts of opportunities for China to harm the US.

"Our main principle will be personal liberties and freedom, and if you don't agree with me you're fired."

This is extremely, extremely bad. Our legal system cannot function if the govt retaliates — and if courts allow it to retaliate — against lawyers who take matters the govt disfavors.

“And therefore, we will _____.”

Senator, welcome to Bluesky. Can you explain why you're sponsoring a bill to repeal Section 230, which would effectively make it impossible for Bluesky to do what it's doing today, creating this kind of space? Thanks. www.techdirt.com/2025/02/21/w...

This is your regular reminder that government mandated backdoors for end-to-end encrypted comms are bullshit, make everyone less safe, and should be resisted at maximum volume.

New — HHS just got another email with guidance stating that they aren’t required to respond to the 5 bullets email, but if they do they should follow specific guidelines including: “Assume that what you write will be read by malign foreign actors and tailor your response accordingly.”

Once upon a time, these were actions by a private company. Now they are actions being undertaken by a high-ranking government official, in connection with his public activities. This raises 1A issues that didn’t exist before.

This would be completely illegal. But you wouldn’t know that from reading this post, the headline, or the lede. Unbelievably bad.

"They're putting persecuted Christian refugees in camps in the jungle" sounds like something Glenn Beck would accuse the Obama administration of doing and yet now it's a pillar of the Republican agenda.

the line about how trump is just trolling or joking about the “king” thing is belied somewhat by the fact that his administration’s explicit position is he can do whatever he wants and that everyone in every branch of government needs to bow to his demands or be banished

“I am a king and my will is law” isn’t a clever distraction from what he’s doing, it’s the central underlying justification for everything he’s doing.

every day I think about the comms strategy of the korean opposition party in the wake of the coup and I get so burningly resentful that other countries have legislators who are awake

Just a reminder that this is a law that went into effect on January 19 that was passed by Congress and upheld by the Supreme Court and is being ignored because the president decided nobody needs to follow the law.

I think it's bad that they're attempting to create what functionally amounts to a dual power structure of political commissars who have power over congressionally approved heads of federal agencies if I'm being for real with you guys.
