What makes these AI utopian statements so depressing is the attitude that learning is simply fact gathering and problem solving. That knowledge is always goal oriented. The arts and humanities, in which total understanding is impossible (and the point), mystifies these tech bros.

The Minnesota assassin appears to be a hate-filled right winger. So can we stop walking on eggshells about MAGA's legitimization of political violence? Yes, Republicans have also been the target of inexcusable violence, but this isn't a "both sides" issue. 1/ A🧵on the danger.

I absolutely hate this kind of pop neuroscience.

For two days, Caroline Dias Goncalves’ family didn’t know what happened to her. They had been tracking her phone and noticed her location froze in Aurora. It wasn’t until she was finally allowed to call them that they learned ICE had taken her.

Salt Lake Tribune: obstruction of thuggish ICE operations is morally justified. Good people are afraid to go to school, to go to work, to go to the supermarket, to go to church. We are dangerously close to being called to hide our neighbors in attics or under false floorboards.

Utterly shameful.

Countries that think U.S. democracy is functioning well are not generally ones where democracy is functioning well. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

These data are a little shocking to me (gay married couples earn 2x the median household income?), though of course there’s a lot of socioeconomic selection into marriage. Still, I’ve often wondered whether part of homophobia is rooted in the perception that gay people are financially privileged.

This is just going to make me marriage harder in 12 days when I officially get gay married! Thoughts and prayers! www.nytimes.com/2025/06/10/u...

My thoughts on what’s going on in Los Angeles:

I always find it moving when other countries stand up against American autocracy. “No Kings” protests this Saturday are planned in Dublin, Paris, London, Athens, Berlin, Amsterdam, and more. Special shoutout to “No Kings Lilongwe” in Malawi!

Someone needs to write an essay about the powers conferred by wealth (Musk) vs. executive authority (Trump). Seems like there’s a lot of rich sociological analysis possible in this moment (elite competition, the “relative autonomy” of the state and the market, uneasy alliances between oligarchs…)

This is a hell of a thing to read.

We love PBS!

“A shameful, vindictive erasure of those who fought to break down barriers for all to chase the American Dream … Our military is the most powerful in the world -- but this spiteful move does not strengthen our national security or the 'warrior' ethos," Pelosi said. apple.news/A8d0L76SDQQm...

A compelling article on the criticism that scholars like Timothy Snyder have received for supposedly “fleeing” the country: www.meditationsinanemergency.com/staying-with...

Happy Pride, everyone!

🧪 Attention those with terminated grants, including for NSF, NASA, EPA, NIH, etc: Let Congress know about the impact of terminations via this form: democrats-science.house.gov/grantcancela... Only Dem staff on the House Science Committee will have access (unless if you explicitly state otherwise).

Within weeks of coming to power, the white nationalist regime flew in Afrikaners as refugees from what the regime's leader called an anti-white "genocide" - while at the same time shutting down asylum and escalating their purge of non-white people they declared "alien enemies." Not very subtle.

President Trump’s claims of “white genocide” and the fast-tracking of white Afrikaners to the US—when he has halted the refugee resettlement program—is entirely consistent with the goal of creating a white ethnostate. Official US policy: Expel immigrants & import descendants of European colonists.

Gosh, I hope so.

“From a distance, the sound of people being broken is all but inaudible, but it was the loudest thing I could hear in the West Bank … louder than the hum of drones above the refugee camps or the buzz of jets on their way to and from bombing Gaza …” harpers.org/archive/2025...

@bcdreyer.social Newsweek recently described an executive order as “encroachment toward martial law.” Is that a correct usage? I thought you had to “encroach on/upon,” as in “this executive order encroaches on our first amendment freedoms.”

New University of Utah policy rewards church members: “For example, a returned [Mormon] missionary might get 12 hours in, say, general education & another 16 hours of credit in language. That’s almost a year of credit.” This is a 1st Amendment violation. @ffrf.org www.deseret.com/utah/2025/04...

This is so depressing: the Trump admin has terminated a grant that was going to reinterview Black Americans from the National Survey of American Life, one of the most important mental health surveys of the 21st century and one that sociologists still use more than 2 decades after data were collected

Marjorie Taylor Greene is currently spouting off the most egregious bigotry in her introduction to today’s hearing on public radio & television. Here is just one statement: “PBS is one of the founders of the trans child abuse industry.” We can’t become desensitized to this kind of insanity.

“Even universities with endowments valued over just $5 billion, on average, spend less than 5 percent of that each year. If they won’t spend their wealth to defend their academic missions, what are they hoarding it for?” www.nytimes.com/2025/03/25/o...

WOW! Thank you to everyone that came out to our Homecoming Parade for Rep. Burgess Owens! Unfortunately, he didn't come to celebrate... But many of his informed and wonderfully enthusiastic constituents did!!

TOMORROW FOLKS! 1PM! WHERE IS BURGESS OWENS?!

President Trump's executive order to eliminate the Institute of Museum & Library Services would have disastrous effects for communities nationwide. We call on all Americans who value reading & learning to reach out to their elected leaders. Read ALA's full response: www.ala.org/news/2025/03...

Each dot represents 10 people whose lives depend on US foreign aid, just for HIV prevention & treatment. Without it, 1.6m people could die *per year*.

Trump, Rubio, Musk and the his DOGE employees, Luke Farritor and Gavin Kliger, collectively chose to kill these people. Through orders, indifference, and through pushing buttons that meant that some of the most vulnerable people in the world would have their lives sniffed out.

I just learned that a University of Utah professor who was asked to give a talk has been told to edit (read: censor) their personal statement to avoid mentioning the real target population of their research, sexual & gender minorities, and instead talk about “various populations.”

This is a good action item because it: 1. Seeks info 2. Keeps DOGE busy if it complies 3. Is a basis for legal action if it doesn’t
