Your public service announcement that the incredible You Do Not Have Yo Say Anything - with the equally incredible @joannahs.bsky.social - continues today on BBC Radio 4 and iPlayer. It’s a wonderfully true and compassionate insight into the criminal justice system. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/brand...

Nobody likes a told you so but there is literally no St George's flag waving English patriot who was more delighted by Brexit than Putin. Now that Trump has come out as his ride or die we truly are between the devil and the deep blue sea.

Seen some American posters suggesting Europeans and Ukrainians are, in bad faith, not wanting to engage in a peace process. How many Americans would have been content to cede the Eastern Seaboard to Al Qaeda after 9/11, with no guarantee against further lost territory?

Right, social media site. Today is the day that the lovely people at @picadorbooks.bsky.social reveal the cover for my first crime thriller, The Cut Throat Trial. So here it is. And I think it’s rather splendid. If anybody wishes to preorder, links are below. bio.to/7zNmPU Eek.

I’m not a historian but is there any example ever of peace talks concerning two warring nations taking place at which one of the nations was not present? It’s like a divorce hearing with the adulterer and his mistress but not the wife.

America has made its bed, now we have to lie in it.

I very much fear Zelensky will need eyes in the back of his head if America continues like this.

If you're into true crime or have any interest in what actually happens in the Criminal Justice System don't miss Joanna Hardy-Susskind giving an authoritative primer weekdays on Radio 4 at 1345 or listen here: bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00…. She talks to me in Episode 5 about prosecuting.

Valentine’s Day is a notorious occasion for break ups so perhaps it’s time to admit that the special relationship, for so long not very special, is fast becoming not even relationship.

But the sentiment is real

Some news, team! 🎙️ I’m so excited to make my broadcasting debut for BBC Radio 4 next week. ‘You Do Not Have to Say Anything’ is a 10 episode behind-the-scenes peek at (and love letter to) the criminal justice system. Join me, Mon-Fri at 13:45 on BBC Radio 4 & BBC Sounds 🧡

I’m sure Republican voters remember that bit in the Book of Samuel where David’s best mate stabs him in the back allowing Goliath to trample all over him. The Philistines are well past the gate now.

Absolutely massive respect for Chris de Burgh's commitment to Received Pronuciation that he doesn't rhyme 'dance' with 'romance' in Lady in Red. That's artistic integrity for you.

A new motto for a new presidency

Vale Marianne Faithfull. I love this reading by her of The Lady of Shalott: open.spotify.com/track/13oSd1...

Got a phone call from school asking to pick up the 8yo as unwell. Looked him up and down and immediately diagnosed 'Ferris-Buelleritis'. He asked me if that was serious. I said it would be when we got home.

What sentences for politicians who call for tougher sentencing when they sat gladly by in government while their party relentlessly degraded the criminal justice system?

It would be royally cool if the King could save the cinema named after him. Until that happens please sign this petition: princecharlescinema.com/savethepcc/ #SavePrinceCharlesCinema 🤴

Some very kind friends have given us an instruction manual for our kids.

Had to explain to the 8yo that 14 years' hard labour had nothing to do with the Maternity Ward. And him a criminal barrister's son too...

The Pupillage Gateway closes in a couple of weeks. A little personal plea to candidates. Please, please, please don't use AI in your applications.

5yo: Mum, why are you always listening to the News? Wife: Because I'm interested in the world. 5yo: I'm not, I'm interested in stickers and aliens.

If you’re in any doubt about the wisdom of a particular arm gesture perform it in front of the Reichstag. If you’re immediately bundled into a police van there’s your answer.

8yo: l’m thinking of standing for the school council. Me: Great, what’s your policy? 8yo: I would get to miss two classes a week. Me: That’s your motive not your policy.

Of course the Inauguration is in the Capitol. His house now. Was America's once.

Imagine if Trump’s first act was to sequester all of Elon’s assets.

Here's an article I have written for Counsel Magazine about what 20 years of practice has taught me: www.counselmagazine.co.uk/articles/rig...

Andrew Malkinson did not serve a part time prison sentence, he and others wrongfully convicted deserve full time leadership in the battle against miscarriages of justice.

I recently saw the Champs-Élysées written as Chomps Elisee and that would be the best cat food name ever.

I've written a blog about what the victims of rape gangs need and it's not another inquiry: counselofperfection.blogspot.com/2025/01/what-c…

RIP David Lodge. Quite by accident, I played the organ for half of his son's wedding when I was a teenager. I was about fourteen at the time. It's a story that could have come out of one of his novels, so let's give it a whirl on here... 🧵[Anecdote alert....] www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

If the UK was a person we’d have a restraining order against Musk by now

This Guatemalan Death Head from the 1st Millennium looks startlingly like some more irascible judges of my acquaintance.

So, 2025 is the year that I get to introduce/inflict my new pseudonymous pen name - S.J. Fleet. And send this little critter out into the world. August 2025 will be the debut of The Cut Throat Trial (although you can pre-order now). And good Lord I’m terrified. www.amazon.co.uk/Cut-Throat-T...

I’ve written a blog about not being this guy: thepaternitytest.blogspot.com/2025/01/grow...

What was your highlight of 2024? If I pick one, it was walking through my local Crown Court and my WhatsApp pinging. I checked my phone to see a message from one of the children of the Afghan Judges we’d helped evac, he is now reading law and was observing & had recognised me (despite wig & gown).

A blog about going on paternity leave: thepaternitytest.blogspot.com/2024/12/in-p...

Went to soft play with my Berliner brother-in-law and asked where my son was. He said ‘In the ball bath’. Apparently that’s how Germans say ball pit.

Dear Santa, You didn’t get me the thesaurus I asked for and now I’m mad. You made me really mad. I’m mad at you

Biden commuting the death sentences of the majority of Federal prisoners ironically emphasises what an arbitrary penalty the death sentence is. Something very weird and uncomfortable about identifying what lives are worth death and which only life.

What’s the most obscure bit of etiquette/manners you were taught growing up? I was told that wedding invitations should be responded to in the 3rd person written in the middle of the page.

Many bail applications made today in which the main submission is
