Feels awkward but necessary to celebrate scientific progress in this imperiled time for US biomedical research. Proud of our latest paper out today exploring the role of transposable elements in antiviral resistance to HIV 🦠 genomebiology.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.... 🧵1/n

On March 7, let's stand up for science! 🔬✊ In solidarity with Stand Up For Science US (@standupforscience.bsky.social) and in response to threats against scientific institutions, actions will take place in every university city in France. Info & registration 👉 standupforscience.fr

Freezing out the NIH's funding means freezing out American innovation. Research into curing cancer, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's all delayed. And ultimately it won't just cost us advancements in life-saving research, it will cost us lives.

Clandestine meeting at a bar with NIH researchers, hearing their plans for the uprising ✊ (jk jk). Fun to have a casual meet up with @pedroprocha.bsky.social @mbaudic.bsky.social @annadorotheasenft.bsky.social and Todd Macfarlan while I’m in DC! Thanks Pedro for putting it together!

Back in the States for a week, and it's a different experience to read a paper newspaper, and every page is like 3-4 terrible stories (except apparently they're improving batteries for cars, so that's good, I guess)

Always liked her, great to see these laid out. We, in fact, all must take a clear stance.

@harmitmalik.bsky.social asked for a translation from German. Here is a lightly edited machine translation: drive.google.com/file/d/10kXA... Images below.

On January 6th, 1995, my (now ex) wife and I boarded a flight from Heathrow to JFK on a one way ticket. We had two suitcases and about $900 in cash - this was everything we owned and we were moving to the US. We thought it was maybe for 2-3 years. I had visited the US once, for a conference, and

One of our supporters shared this with us—people are getting creative tonight!

Here’s a gift link. This is a good one to share with your non-scientist friends and family www.nytimes.com/2025/02/14/o...

This paper is such an incoherent mish-mash of cell types, mutants and assays. The recruitment mechanism is shaky, and the phenotypes are weak. UHRF1 is never mentioned. Gene body methylation is presumed to promote expression. How it ended up in Cell is beyond me #RantOver shorturl.at/Zb8HW

Two more weeks to apply to join us in Paris ! research.pasteur.fr/en/call/call...

Read this preprint today from @jakobssonlab.bsky.social lab that profiles and CRISPRi perturbs L1 transcription in hiPSCs and cerebral organoids. It is extremely well done. The L1 CRISPRi phenotype in the organoids is subtle and variable but interesting. 1/n www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... #TEsky

Good thing we stopped distributing HIV medicine in Africa so we could make this important purchase

Looking forward to visiting Institut Jacques Monod in March ! Thanks @maxvcg.bsky.social and @ijmonod.bsky.social for the invitation

Pretty fascist, imho "The Associated Press said the White House had blocked its journalists from attending press events because the news agency had not started using the term Gulf of America."

Today we celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Join us in recognising the crucial role women and girls play in science and promoting gender equality in scientific research and education. Below, we highlight some of the incredible women in our lab. #WomenInScience

Wow, this seems like an incredible opportunity!

🚨Preprint Alert🚨 I'm really happy to finally share our exploits in red algae and introduce the wider community to Bostrychia, the new model system we have been developing to tackle the molecular biology of red algae. Isn't she a beauty? Thread below 🧵 1/8 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Very excited for @maudborensztein.bsky.social @igmm-montpel.bsky.social visit to @ijmonod.bsky.social coming up next month!!!! If you happen to be in Paris on March 14, you should swing through! www.ijm.fr/event/semina...

Solar overtakes coal in Europe for the first time in 2024 Renewables supplied 47% of the bloc’s power in 2024, while fossil fuels accounted for 29%. That’s a significant shift from five years ago, The EU has halved emissions since their peak in 2007. https://buff.ly/40O0Iov #ShareGoodNewsToo

This is a room where we turn very modest salaries and budgets (and lots of coffee) into new knowledge, life-saving innovations, and technology that feeds business growth. It's literally the loom that spins hay into gold but these numpties are suddenly worried about the cost of hay.

Please follow the Penn Epigenetics Institute (@pennepigenetics.bsky.social), a stellar community of researchers in epigenetics, transcriptional regulation, chromatin biology, and beyond. Led by fearless leaders Shelley Berger, Gerd Blobel, and Golnaz Vahedi!

Really nice study from Marketa Tomkova's group @ndm.ox.ac.uk drawing link between DNAme, polycomb-antagonism and gene activation in cancer. A nice complement to our paper in ESCs (plus some rad epigenome editing experiments 😍). Congrats to all the authors! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Very interesting epigenome editing work on the effect of K4me3 on both gene expression and recombination in plants! Well done @c-jake-harris.bsky.social & co!

I don’t know why stories like these aren’t front page headline by themselves. I’m doubtful the modal American understands Trump’s anti-DEI crusade is just naked bigotry. Behavior like this spells it out so plainly.

Being in a think tank and online bubble causes people to overestimate the popularity of their ideas. You win, and you think it’s because of your ideas, not in spite of them. For instance, it is widely unpopular to illegally cut medical research.

It’s been a tough few weeks. My 10yo daughter was diagnosed with a very rare, aggressive cancer called interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS). I’m reaching out to identify clinicians/patients who have encountered pediatric IDCS or other (non-LCH) dendritic or histiocytic sarcomas cases.

European Research Institutes reaching out to panicking American scientists: "Come here! The water's warm...well tepid...and a bit stagnant. Good childcare though!"
