šŸ‘€ The new Society for Social-Ecological Systems (SocSES) is launching on March 27. This will be an academic home for inter- and transdisciplinary sustainability scholars. Link to registration below.

Feeling for my colleagues south of the border. Yesterday we received a stop-work order on a new NSF grant. Last week, my friendā€™s name appeared on a list identifying professors who were ā€œDEI hiresā€. It hasnā€™t been a month.

Ecosystems and People (@esandpeople.bsky.social) is now on this space! We are an inter- and transdisciplinary journal on biodiversity, ecosystems & quality of life. Give us a follow!

New publication led by Vanya Bisht and our group of community partners from South Phoenix where we outline the ā€˜barrioā€™ innovation, our way of co-producing knowledge to advance environmental justice. #CAPLTER doi.org/10.5751/ES-1...

Thanks to whoever made this labyrinth next to my campus building. It was a gift to take 10 minutes to walk through it and disconnect from whatever stage of late capitalism we are in. šŸ¤ā„ļø

Itā€™s a wrap! My Future Cities undergraduate class is done for the term. In our last session we tested the studentsā€™ final assignments: each group designed a board game that could help decision-makers think in anticipatory ways.

I watched the sunrise from the Superstition Mountains this morning. It was a nice way to say goodbye to the Sonoran desert for now.

What a treat!

Proud moment: many moons ago, a group of researchers and community organizers dreamed building an art piece that would display air quality to catalyze conversations about health equity in South Phoenix. Today we finally lit it up!!

Morning at Spaces of Opportunity, one of the nicest community gardens in the South of Phoenix. We spent time reconnecting and celebrating the work of organizers.

I'm feeling this one HARD this morning. In the third round of revisions, a brand new, third (!) reviewer suggests major changes to the manuscript.

Stockholm University is hiring up to 3 Assistant Professors working on Biodiversity su.varbi.com/en/what:job/... utilizing "...recent advances - such as within sequencing, AI, imaging, mass spectrometry, tomography and exposomics - provide new opportunities."

I'll go back to posting about resilience and futures in a minute but, amid the follow frenzy here, I have found @nameshiv.bsky.social and he has brought that epic thread about his brother-in-law and the rice truck to this app. I'm complete.

Join us as a postdoc to evaluate climate-related financial risks in industrial fisheries. This role is part of the ā€œFinancial risks of climate impacts on seafood productionā€ project, aiming to create strategies for companies to mitigate these risks: https://buff.ly/2Lu3mgn

A new society for social-ecological systems will launch next year. If your research focuses on resilience thinking, transformation, and SES, join the listserv and be part of this exciting community. socses.org

Wrapping up a week in beautiful Xishuangbanna talking with ecologists about the possibilities of transdisciplinary and futures research for sustainability science.

China-bound to attend the International Long Term Ecological Research Conference šŸ‡ØšŸ‡³. Iā€™m excited to give a keynote and a training on participatory and community-led research. www.ilter2024.org

New pub from #IPBES comparing values of nature embedded in future scenarios found in grey vs. academic literature. Gray lit holds more transformative visions. But, it's hard to do systematic searches of gray lit so here's a custom, open-access search process: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Our new paper introduces Biosphere Futures, a global database of social-ecological scenarios. If you work in this space, be sure to check the database and add your scenarios. ecologyandsociety.org/vol29/iss1/a...

In the coldest day of winter, this piece by Indigenous artist JJ Valley arrived from Guadalupe, AZ. I feel like I have got a bit of desert in my living room.

One of my dearest and most dedicated collaborators from South Phoenix is the survivor of gun violence. Sam is the kind of person that would give the shirt off his back to help the community. If you can contribute to his recovery, please do: gofund.me/e3ac80bc

I landed in Amsterdam an hour ago and Iā€™m putting my full trust on the Dutch train system to make it to my own presentation at the @ESG_Project conference. Come to GR 1.109 for the first panel on ā€œGoverning Urban Transformationsā€ and point me towards the coffee.

Weā€™re looking for a Coordinator for the new, amazing IndigeLab Network, an international group of Indigenous researchers. This is a target hire for an Indigenous gender minority. Based at Memorial U. indigelabnetwork.com/2023/05/09/o...

Iā€™m excited that the Programme for Ecosystem Change and Society (PECS) and the Resilience Alliance have announced their first conference in a long time. Itā€™s happening in Montreal next summer and the submission portal is now open: event.fourwaves.com/pecs2024/pages

My favorite thing about living in Kitchener has to be walking to the market every Saturday. The vendors, the produce, the music, and you are always bound to run into someone you know.

Beautiful Sunrise Ceremony today on campus to honor the children who never returned home and the survivors of the Canadian residential school system.

I just fought off a raccoon with a hockey stick. Howā€™s your Sunday morning going?
