👇 Conversation between Malcom Harris and @timnitgebru.bsky.social about the history of Silicon Valley, its connections with eugenics and present day discourse around A(G)I. Highly recommended to critically examine AGI hype.

Organizing as an energy-impaired person has taught me a lot about movement stamina & accessibility. You don’t have to be able to be in the streets to make an impact. You don’t have to be able to see people in-person to build community. Can read lil more in my featured story on forgeorganizing.org

“These guys are trying to take a torch to the entire concept that we should care about each other as humans.”

Cf. AGI 👇

❤️ Bluesky'ers moeten even doorklikken naar Mastodon […]

“From time to time instances will arise in which the society […] threaten[s] the very mission of the university and its values of free inquiry. In such a crisis, it becomes the obligation of the university as an institution to oppose such measures and actively to defend its interests and its values”

Same in NL, yesterday in talkshow Eva all about the economy 😳

“Elon Musk’s calls for a so-called “efficient” US government—including wanting to end the already endangered right to work from home, a disability accommodation for many—are less surprising when you view him as a techno-eugenicist.”

Gleichschaltung is the word you're looking for, @theguardian.com

“Once you decide that a single vulnerable minority can be sacrificed, you’re operating within a fascist logic,” they said. “That means there might be a second one you’re willing to sacrifice and a third, a fourth. Then what happens?”

Everything on this list is offensive … but I’m stuck on “empathy”. Workers are being told they can’t use the word “empathy” because it means they’re not in compliance with Trump’s executive order. I feel like removing empathy is the perfect encapsulation of this administration

This is a very serious topic but making this are me feel better for about thirty seconds. 💙

A camp, if you will, to concentrate people undesirable to the regime. Nine days. It took nine days.

It’s so bizarre, executive orders not to care about people 💔 I guess my entire research line would be ‘non-compliant’ 🤬 and for that matter my existence as a scientist experiencing a disability. Pfff… #DisabilityInclusion Sending support to all of you 🫶

Every time I sit through a talk about how brilliant GenAI is for doing exciting creative things, I feel like the fucking fun police.

As someone who has reported on AI for 7 years and covered China tech as well, I think the biggest lesson to be drawn from DeepSeek is the huge cracks it illustrates with the current dominant paradigm of AI development. A long thread. 1/

The White House didn't say "stop teaching about the Tuskegee Airmen when you do US history." The White House said "stop doing DEI and wokeness," and the military interpreted it as "stop saying the Tuskegee Airmen were heroes, and maybe stop teaching about them altogether." Yeah, that's bad.

Reminiscent of what I see some Dutch universities do with social sciences and humanities… [and no we don’t live in an authoritarian regime but this dynamics feels strangely familiar…]

Many who speak about DEI being removed from employment are forgetting disabled people in that conversation. It’s not surprising since most forget about us as a whole but this is going to make it so disabled people can barely get hired or receive any accommodations. We’re barely surviving as is.

“In short, we need 2025 to be the year not of agentic AI but of agentic humans, operating with the full moral urgency that comes with that term and that the moment demands.”

Academic love languages: minor revisions!!! 🎉💃🥳

Reading draft student essays that have language issues is very reassuring. #GenAI

In a bleak week, let me ask you: What niche papers do you recommend? Let's define #NichePapers as good work by yourself or others that deserves more readers Examples & more in this post: In praise of niche papers ideophone.org/in-praise-of...

Ableism is super insidious because it doesn’t just manifest as actively being like “fuck Disabled people.” It’s also things like “there are not any Disabled people here that need access” or “it’s not a big deal that it is inaccessible.” Ableism can just be indifference to the lack of access.

If there is anything we can do as Technical Universities, it is to hold the social sciences and humanities dear. Technology is meaningless without people. Shaping digital societies is not a neutral enterprise. #ComputingWithCare

Die Zeit won't even show the salute.

Passive aggressive @postnl.bsky.social chatbot sending mixed messages 😬 Its explainability could also use some work 🙈 #GenAI

The video of the presentation I gave in December on my vision of Intimate Computing as fostering a caring and inspiring digital society is now available on my homepage! ✨ Check it out if you want to know more about our work: intimate-computing.net

Started with the survey but it made me realize again that the whole concept of ‘intelligence’ is really not what I’m aiming for with my work (in the AI field… 🤔). See also my blog from a while ago for further reflections: intimate-computing.net/is-ai-resear...

“What I am suggesting is that our current sociocultural moment, combined with a major new company led by a CEO with known challenges around telling the truth, feels eerily familiar to my time on Wall Street in the early 2000s and the unique role Enron played within the hype cycle of that era.”

📢NEW: 'Open' AI systems aren't open. The vague term, combined w frothy AI hype is (mis)shaping policy & practice, assuming 'open source' AI democratizes access & addresses power concentration. It doesn't. @smw.bsky.social, @davidthewid.bsky.social & I correct the record👇 nature.com/articles/s41...

For my first piece of 2025 at @motherjones.com, I spoke with Anita Say Chan on the history of eugenicists corrupting data to be discriminatory–which continues today in Big Tech. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Happy new year 2025 with some firework shots from balcony taken with EOS 400D and 300mm / f4.0 lens.

Wonderful conversation with @meredithmeredith.bsky.social @debalie.bsky.social, talking about tech, power and the human condition! Inspiring start into the new year ✨ www.youtube.com/live/lMFYUGk...
