Getting Started

The two leading contenders for prime minister have deep personal roots in the West. Yet Conservatives in the region argue that the West is "left out" of national decisionmaking? And that there's a "national unity crisis"? You don't have to believe them.

Western Conservatives spill a lot of ink over how alienated they feel sending dozens of MPs to sit on the opposition benches election after election. Far less thinking goes into the role of those same Conservatives in preventing the party from winning enough seats elsewhere to form government.

This is the clearest evidence yet that the UCP considers itself a northern wing of the MAGA movement. From the leader, herself. I suspect there are serious national security discussions about cutting Alberta out of foreign relations entirely, after hearing this.

This should be a bigger story nationally.

One of the hallmarks of liberal democracy is the peaceful transfer of power. That relies on both elite consensus around conceding defeat and losers' consent among the masses. Danielle Smith's behaviour this week has raised genuine concern on these fronts. +

When do we stop treating UCP ventures to Washington as diplomatic missions, and start recognizing them as field trips? thetyee.ca/Analysis/202...

No AB govt has played a more heavy-handed role in AHS than Danielle Smith’s. They’ve replaced the CEO 5 times, the Board twice, reorganized, decentralized, allegedly messed with contracts. Nobody’s believing Danielle Smith’s fiction that AHS is somehow separate from her. She made sure it wasn’t.

All warfare, even economic warfare, is based on asymmetry. Lucky for Canada, if Trump makes good on his tariff threat, we have lots of ways we can affect him and his friends personally. Let's get creative- and once we get through that moment of crisis, we need to get serious about nation building.👇
