So chuffed to have our second brood of great tits, one in each of the 2 boxes we put up in Feb.

What does my head in is that any of this needs to be said (it's an excellent thread of course). There's so little in the world that I recognise any more except greed and stupidity—but even those are strange new monsters now, freed as they are from the institutional checks that I took for granted.

This really is a serious problem that too many good people won’t face.

After five weeks of 24/7 travelling with my bride if 54 years, Sir Walter Scott spoke to me at Edinburgh Waverly Train Station.

Sunday morning, Magdalen cloisters.

WHAT does the fox think I’ve buried under this new peony? Excavated with military precision two nights in a row. Blighter.

Friday evening fun; potatoes out, zinnias in! (Soil as dry as August though. So alarming.)

Stood next to Sir Ian McKellan in the gents at ENO; but I'd already seen his Lear.

I’ve always been dismissive of choosing a plant only for its name, but I must say I’m tempted by Clematis ā€˜Propertius’ for that alone.

I always look forward to being elated at the end of a long run of marking, but when I finally finish I just feel vaguely ill.

New arrival up out of the pond.

One of the great consolations for advancing years is receiving a former undergraduate’s book. Well done, Dan; seems like only yesterday we were having Dryden tutorials.

Was introduced to this 30+ years ago at dinner parties hosted by my dissertation supervisor—perfect for a crowd—but with the twist of Pernod instead of vermouth. Terrific.

In addition to what good news this is, three cheers (and more) for @oxfordclarion.bsky.social , which has transformed local news in Oxford. Astonishing speed, accuracy, balance, and humour (!). Revival of local journalism like this may be one of our best social-political safeguards.

Last minute touches before the residents’ association Open Gardens. Thinking of it as our contribution to Pride Month (not that it’s *remotely* competitive or anything).

Ladybird larvae doing their bit with the aphids in the greenhouse.

Not a bad view when emerging from a day in front of a microfilm reader: St Peter Mancroft, from the City of Norwich Library.

A despatch from home: TOH’s eye has been at it again.

Details.

Leaf cutter bees have been busy on the Epimedium.
