Red is a passionate soul, and when he stumbles on the poetry of Walt Whitman, it speaks to him. No one remembers Walt Whitman in the post-apocalypse, so Red takes his cues from the poems and comes to the logical conclusion that Whitman was a prophet, filled with divine ecstasy.
