The mental leaps, the logical pretzels, the sheer effort that some people in the media are going to have to come up with to avoid naming the most obvious fucking reason in the universe all this stuff is happening

Why do nations suspend elections during wartime? 1) Your citizens in occupied territories can't be accurately polled 2) Your country's refugees abroad can't be accurately polled 3) Election purdah periods means second guessing actions; an opponent can take advantage of even small response delays

Trump calls other people dictators & clamping down on free speech etc precisely to undermine critics of his regime. Undermine reality & the meaning of insults against him, & his supporters can ignore them & "both sides" justify everything he does.

Kamala was right. And it only took him less than 30 days to roll over for Putin.

President Zelenskyy has been one of the greatest leaders of our time, guiding Ukraine through the darkest period of its recent history, rising up to Russia’s unwarranted aggression, being an inspiration to the Ukrainian people and ensuring that Ukraine’s voice is heard on the world stage.

I understand why these stories exist but it’s important to be clear that he’s not “saving” 16 billion, he’s choosing, personally, without oversight, to wipe out 16 billion dollars of government services to veterans and the disabled and food safety etc etc

Have written about JD Vance’s Munich speech. In what may prove to be the biggest week for European security since 1991, it’s time Europe listened to what Trump and his Vice President are telling us. open.substack.com/pub/goodalla...

Reminded of this terrific post by @cjterry.bsky.social on the topic of strategies which work under some electoral systems but not others:

What Europe would have looked like if we had frozen the borders 3 years into WW2 because we just needed to stop the fighting.

I really hate that the European regional powers (Germany, UK, France, Italy, Spain & Poland) are using the Weimar+ moniker. Weimar is synonymous with democratic failure. They should try calling it the Chamberlain group, or the Munich group, or the 2024 US election, or Israel.

Last night's dream - I was project managing(?) a children's activity centre build, opposite Newcastle's new town hall(?). I eventually got David Blunkett(?) to calm down the town hall's op manager, who was angry about the scaffolding being so close to the entrance.
