Our whole society and most of our cities are built on the assumption that the oil embargo years were a one-off aberration, never to be repeated. I think it's looking more and more likely that that assumption may prove to be wrong, and we haven't done much to insulate ourselves from the consequences.

Like, hey, you're not a multi-billionaire, so, say, a 15% cut to your taxes means little, and a subsequent cut to city or federal services means a lot to your day-to-day, whereas your local billionare is making millions of dollars more per year and a cut to services doesnt really matter to them.
