#OnThisDay 26 Feb 1815 Napoleon escapes Elba, on the disguised brig, INCONSTANT. His escort to Elba, Sir Neil Campbell was absent, visiting his mistress. The French press said, "The Buzzard has flown his cage", It began the '100 Days Campaign' & led to Waterloo.

Spent some time at Montrose Museum, which has Napoleon's hat*. *it came from Dr Francois Antommarchi's collection, who was Napoleon's physician from 1819 until his death in 1821, where he made the death mask of Bonaparte on St Helena, the hat is believed to have been from St Helena also (probably).

1 February 1809 French defenders on the heights of Martinique were attacked by British troops. The British lost 84 killed & 334 wounded. French lost over 700 casualties. By 3 Feb the French had been forced back to fortifications near the capital. 3 Eagles were captured.

#OnThisDay 30th January 1791. Arthur Wesley (later Wellington) was promoted to Captain. He transferred from the 12th (Prince of Wales) Light Dragoons, in which he had served as Lieutenant with for 2 years, to the 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment with the promotion to Captain.

#OnThisDay 28 Jan 1808 Prince John of Portugal signed the "Abertura dos Portos" law. It allowed trading between Brazil & "friendly nations", particularly Great Britain. It broke the colonial pact that had forced Brazil to have commercial relations with Portugal only 🇧🇷🇵🇹

#OnThisDay 24 Jan 1812 Major General Robert Craufurd’s funeral at the Breach of Ciudad Rodrigo. (By Christa Hook) On 23 Jan General Craufurd, died of wounds from leading his troops in storming Ciudad Rodrigo. The coffin was borne by 6 warrant officers, of the Light Division.

#OnThisDay 23 January 1795, a French hussar cavalry regiment captured 14 Dutch ships that were frozen at anchor in the 2-mile stretch between Den Helder & Texel island. The cavalry moved across the frozen Zuiderzee bay & completed their unique capture of the Dutch fleet.

Stormed #OnThisDay Ciudad Rodrigo 19 Jan 1812, overnight. The main assaults against the 2 breaches were prefaced by a supporting attack made at the south-west face of the town's walls. British & Portuguese casualties from the start of the siege totalled 1,121 killed & wounded.

Fought #OnThisDay 16 Jan 1809 The Battle of Corunna was fought. Having arrived at the port, the bedraggled British force turned against their pursuers & pushed them back, so they could evacuate. Winning a vital victory but lost 900 men including their commander, Sir John Moore.

#OnThisDay 14 January 1773 Kitty Wellesley (née Pakenham), the 1st Duchess of Wellington was born. Born in Dublin she courted her future husband (both members of Anglo-Irish families) 10 years before their marriage in 1806. She died at Apsley House in 1831.

The Battle of Uclés fought 13 January 1809, Marshal Victor 🇫🇷 crushed the force led by Venegas 🇪🇸 Victor's frontal attack drove the Spanish into the arms of a enveloping second division. For only 150 casualties, the French inflicted losses of 1,000+ & captured 5,866 prisoners.
