The Kentucky warbler was not going to come out from the low brush as the hunting was successful there. #birds #warbler #kentuckywarbler

Got to see my first rough green snake of the season. This was a small one, perhaps a foot long. #reptile #roughgreensnake

It's a pleasure to see the indigo buntings returning to our area. #birds #bluebird #indigobunting

I've now been able to watch blue-gray gnatcatchers constructing nests in three parks/reserves. This pair was working well in tandem.

A lovely visitor to the yard yesterday: great-crested flycatcher. There were two so perhaps they will nest nearby.

Green heron flying across pond as I got too close; I hadn't even seen it yet before it flew off #birds #greenheron #birdinflight

Louisiana waterthrush calling #birds #waterthrush

I usually welcome red-shouldered hawks to the yard. But the American crows and blue jays attacked the raptor. The hawk suddenly swooped to the bluebirds' nest box and tried to extract the nestlings; only got nest material. I rescued 4 babies; parents feeding. #birds #bluebirds #redshoulderedhawk

The first time I have seen largemouth bass spawning! Had no idea what was happening at first. #marinelife #fishspawning #largemouthbass

It looked like someone was nibbling at these mushrooms. #fungifriends #mushrooms

I watched this yellow-crowned night heron successfully fishing for quite a while. It was interesting to see that when s/he might have a problem with a crayfish, the bird would close the nictitating membrane to protect its eyes. Here you see it beginning to do so. #birds #yellowcrownednightheron

It was a nice surprise to see a mother wood duck with four ducklings today! #birds #ducks #woodduck #ducklings

My first-of-season orchard oriole. (Posted this yesterday and for some odd reason called it a Baltimore oriole, which I knew was not correct. I don't think it is possible to edit a posting once it is up, so I am reposting! Thanks to all who liked it yesterday!) #orchardoriole #birds #oriole

This red-shouldered hawk is taking advantage of a newly installed purple martin nesting tower at a local park. Not the goal of the birders who erected it. It will be interesting to see if the purple martins take up residence. #birds #redshoulderedhawk #purplemartinnests

Squirrels abound in my yard and where I bird. At home, they don't fear the red-shouldered hawks but disappear when other raptors come. However, this morning, a red-shouldered hawk flew quickly by with a squirrel at a park, showing these mammals can fall prey. #birds #mammals #raptorprey #squirrel

One of the local American crow pair was eating mealworms and then decided s/he needed a bit of calisthenics. 😀 #birds #Americancrow #crow

When the young hawk arrived, the other birds were no longer to be seen. #birds #raptor #hawk

One of my neighborhood American crows is very fond of dried mealworms (as well as my homemade suet). 🙂 #birds #Americancrow #crow

Mom Carolina chickadee was busy inspecting the nest (which has 4 eggs) so dad flew in with a quick meal for her! #birds #carolinachickadee #nesting

"Do you really have to stay here watching us forage for so long?" said the lovely tree swallow. #birds #swallow #treeswallow

Gemmed satyr butterfly; a small "gem"!

Courtship is always fun to watch. The Northern cardinals were eating together at the feeder but then the male also decided to court his partner by giving her a seed. #birds #northerncardinal #aviancourtship

My first hooded warbler sighting this year! Lovely birds. #birds #hoodedwarbler #warbler

The white-tailed deer are helping me prune my holly bushes. #mammals #whitetaileddeer #deer #deerportrait

Sometimes it would be nice to fly away like the tree swallows! #birds #swallow #treeswallow #birdinflight

I'm happy to see the yard rabbit, an Eastern cottontail, out and about more these days. The chipmunks have begun emerging from their burrows, too. #wildlife #rabbit #Easterncottontail

My first sighting of a white-eyed vireo this spring! #birds #vireo #white-eyedvireo

My first sighting of a blue-gray gnatcatcher nest this year. The pair was putting on the finishing touches when I saw them. Their nests are so beautiful. Chatham County, NC; 30 March 2025 #bluegraygnatcatcher #birds #gnatcatchernest
