We got another nice review of "La sonnambula" at West Bay Opera in Palo Alto. We have two more performances left, Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. Saturday has better ticket availability. www.paloaltoonline.com/ae/2025/02/2...

Here's another positive review for West Bay Opera's La sonnambula, including the chorus. Take advantage of this rare chance to hear this bel canto opera in the Bay Area with fabulous bel canto voices. cordellreports.com/2025/02/16/l...

Thanks to all who came to our first weekend of La sonnambula performances at West Bay Opera in Palo Alto. We have one more weekend of performances coming up and good seats are still available, especially for Saturday evening. Here's our first review: theatreeddys.com/2025/02/la-s...

So much fun to see a couple of Brits visit Detroit and immediately go to Loui's Pizza, the temple of Detroit-style pizza. They not only love it but they do an excellent analysis of what makes it so compelling.

Thanks to Janos Gereben for this great preview article on La sonnambula! We do have a dream cast for this. Come see this rarely done bel canto opera in a theater that's the right size for it. www.sfcv.org/articles/mus...

Here's my take on Carmina Burana, in stark contrast to @joshuakosman.bsky.social and @lisairontongue.bsky.social. It's a visionary piece that anticipates rock and roll by nearly 20 years. It elevates rhythm, melody, lyrics, and repetition over harmonic complexity. It's popularity is well deserved.

Last night we had a wonderful stumble-through for La sonnambula, which is our first time hearing the principals. They are fantastic! Some we've sung with before, others are new to the company. This should be a wonderful show so get your tickets soon.

James Gaffigan and the San Francisco Symphony sure made a believer out of me regarding the Prokofiev 5th tonight! Besides his spirited conducting, our improved cello and flute sections sure helped. I even had some Prokofiev earworms in my head briefly before Sonnambula returned to crowd them out.

I've had my last rehearsal of the year, singing in the chorus for West Bay Opera's production of Bellini's La sonnambula this February in Palo Alto. What fun to sing with my chorus friends again! But what terror to start memorizing a full-length opera where the chorus sings in all but one number.

Congratulations Aunt Jane!

Just saw Wicked Part 1 and it was as fantastic as I had hoped! It was perfectly cast and wonderfully directed by our local hero Jon Chu. He's the son of the proprietor of our town's most popular Chinese restaurant.

This is interesting. I mentioned @rnib.bsky.social in a reply yesterday (didn't even @ them) for their Talking Scores project. Now today's new followers are mostly British musicians and organizations. Welcome!

If you can't get to our Stanford Symphonic Chorus concerts this weekend, the Sunday concert will be livestreamed at 2:30 PST. Mosaics: Howard Hanson Symphony no. 7, "A Sea Symphony": Howard Hanson Hymn for Everyone: Jessie Montgomery Canticle of Freedom: Aaron Copland music.stanford.edu/ssc_live

Post a favorite song from an artist that has fewer than 10,000 monthly listeners on Spotify: Vance Gilbert (1,179 monthly listeners, @vancevancevance.bsky.social) is a local hero in Boston who should be much better known. Here's one of my favorites: youtu.be/FtxVfhq0OHA?...

I really enjoyed tonight's San Francisco Symphony concert. Kazuki Yamada is really a master of balances. Hélène Grimaud played the Ravel exquisitely and Mark Inouye showed up to play the trumpet part! I want to hear more by composer @daifujikura.bsky.social. The Fauré Requiem was slow but lovely.

Any pianist friends at San Francisco Symphony tonight know what Hélène Grimaud’s encore was? Her Ravel Concerto was exquisite.

Two weeks until our Stanford Symphonic Chorus concerts with Peninsula Symphony! Hanson's Sea Symphony has been on my bucket list; I attended the premiere at Interlochen. Copland's Canticle of Freedom was written for the dedication of MIT's Kresge Auditorium. Tickets at www.stanfordlivetickets.org.

Brava to Anne Richardson, our new associate principal cellist at the San Francisco Symphony. Tonight was the first time we heard her as a principal playing solos and she was marvelous. Principal cello used to be an SFS weakness, and now both our principal and associate principal are fantastic!
