@mds49.bsky.social sums up perfectly where need to go from here, when it comes to reforming the state.

Whatever the merits of this deal, it is very sad to read the UK simply described as a “market” in this editorial, rather than as the country to which we belong: www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

We were delighted to host Pat McFadden MP at @uclofficial.bsky.social East today as he set out the governments plan to reform the state. At UCL Policy Lab we’re proud to be partnering with researchers, community leaders, civil society and govt to help drive a new era in public service reform.

Delighted to see England, which I wrote with the brilliant @TomBaldwin66, is a @prospect_uk “book of the year”: www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/culture/6871...

Reeves will be judged on who she speaks 'for'. The Chancellor set out wide-ranging reforms in her Mansion House speech. But can her measures deliver on the economic and political aims of the government? Our latest anylsis: www.ucl.ac.uk/policy-lab/n...

ICYMI mid-migration to here - interesting #UKAUS collaboration on social connection and its importance to public policy, facilitated by @mds49.bsky.social @uclpolicylab.bsky.social - great to have been able to feed into it ses.library.usyd.edu.au/bitstream/ha...

Been thinking about AI this morning and how much of the work is hard practical graft of adoption. Similar to the work done spreading internet-era tech. I wrote this piece recently reflecting on seven ways to drive responsible use of AI in the public sector: medium.com/@jamestplunk...

"Time and again the British public have told their politicians that they are fed up with the quality of what they receive from many public services." Our director @mds49.bsky.social speaking ahead of this weeks @handle.invalid UCL public service reform conference. www.ucl.ac.uk/news/2024/no...

As it seems to be getting busy here, we've created a starter pack for UCL People. Check out our brilliant colleagues. Do reply, and we'll add you to the list 👏 go.bsky.app/CXM2zSJ

This is what ⁦ @mds49.bsky.social ⁩ and I wrote earlier this year in our book, “England, Seven Myths that Changed a Country and How to Set Them Straight.” After America, let’s see how long the “lull in the storm” lasts here.

Off to Liverpool! Come join us at a panel or two …

Delighted to see the brilliant work of the Ordinary Hope team feature in this excellent scene-setter for Labour conference from @AndrewMarr9: www.newstatesman.com/politics/lab...

This all looks depressingly familiar, the real problems in Whitehall are making difficult choices and thinking through complex problems, simplifying to real time data and nerve centres is just a distracting gimmick.

Finished reading this great book by @mds49.bsky.social & @tombaldwin66.bsky.social earlier. It's a history of England, the stories we tell ourselves, and the gap between myth & reality. Far from rewriting our past, it's about telling a new national story - one full of ‘ordinary hope’ for the future

Back from Italy but remembering the best bits by loving this focaccia with cherries that the brilliant Lizzy Pellicano made from Esther Clark’s recipe in the Guardian tonight …

Calling all folk with an interest in UK public policy: I’ve created a starter pack of think tankers, policy analysts & commentators active on @bsky.app go.bsky.app/LtNiL1o

Excited to join here! Here’s a nice photo of a Hackney park today to get started in the right spirit …
