Ok but if I were piloting the RV and we came upon one of these guys, just looming in the distance, I think I might actually lose my mind.

My current postdoc is a 1yr appointment with potential for a 2nd year extension, but all of the chaos surrounding the NSF is making it look like an extension is unlikely. So, by the end of this year I will need to find a more permanent position, and I honestly have no idea how I'm going to manage.

Never. I still have nightmarish dreams about failing a class I forgot or failing an exam I forgot to prepare for....😑

It's the #CrabAZ that @franzanth.bsky.social has been waiting for: V is for Velolambrus... or DORITO CRAB!!! It's not "the" species he called a dorito, but I think these are even more dorito shaped. They are cryptic under rocks, mud, or seagrasses. 🦀🧪🦑

I'm screaming. This is my new favorite piece of art.

most field biologists at least a few years in are sitting on dozens of cool discoveries and undescribed species, and it totally tears us up inside every day. we don't generally get paid to write about them and our jobs make us tired for nearly no money. it's like if your hobby was more working

Grief. There’s no better word for what I’m feeling now. Grief. Knowing that my life’s work is seen as frivolous and unimportant. A line in a ledger to be crossed out, by a 19-year-old kid named BigBalls.

SWEET PRECIOUS BABY ANGELS

They're just little guys! How dare!

Heard real-life baby alligator noises and had to do an animation.

Posting this for no reason at all

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

I have heard ppl think it's bad to take the bad language but I've just been called a "dire threat to the American people" and I would rather put that on a t-shirt than contemplate all the ways they might try to make me unexist.

don’t know if this a real account or not but it’s tweeting like it is and i think it would be great if we made @doge-reporting.bsky.social the most blocked account on here

Small orangey-red gem of a dragonfly - Eastern Amberwing!

Psh, poking dead things I found on the beach is how I met my wife.

THE EYE STALKS 😭💖 Also they got those hugging arms. They just want to see you and love you.

First dipping session of the year at Nethergong this pm, in a pool where Southern Migrant Hawkers laid last year. No luck with them, although the eggs may not have hatched yet, but 1 Hairy Dragonfly nymph. #dragonfly #odonata #UKwildlife

Indeed. Profoundly beautiful track.

happy valentine’s day from the snesbians (snail lesbians) 💗

It's almost Valentine's Day which means it's time to bring back the insect Valentine's card pack (a thread) #valentines #bugs

Happy valentimes! #oldknees

QRP with something watery :)

It finally happened! Way back in 2020, when I moved my Entomology course online, I inserted a little easter egg. I talk about mate guarding in insects (it's part of the Odonata lecture), and there's a suggested bit of reading... 1/3

Many in biotech/private sector are boasting about their ways of funding and doing science But they are staffed with PhDs and postdocs we train in our NIH and NSF funded labs in universities With university labs lacking funds to train, the private sector will be profoundly harmed

Male Red veined Darter. What a stunner but, seemingly, can be quite hard to see from year to year. #dragonfly ##odonata ##UKwildlife

ADHD is just rapidly cycling between overthinking and dialup modem noises, with no control over which one you get.

Was digging through my old images and came across this gif I made of an eastern pondhawk dragonfly emerging from my aquarium several years back. Enjoy! #inverts #dragonflies

These are wonderful little guys, used to have one in my aquarium!

I read Sagan’s “The Demon Haunted World” shortly after it came out and it’s still one of the most influential books in my life and on my thinking. 📖 It has always been relevant, and thirty years later it’s more prescient than ever. Probably time for a re-read. 🧪
