I'm seriously not convinced that the internet was worth it.

Rule of Acquisition no91: Your boss is only worth what he pays you.

Looking around at many of my fellow Americans I am reminded that, while after a tyranny is ended we tend to focus on the noble stories of those who resisted, in the moment, many collaborated, actively or tacitly.

I somehow both miss the crying of gulls and the faint blue shimmer of distant mountains

Yes, & it works: look at Iran or Afghanistan. Men don't have any measurable control of the government in either place, but the state effectively deputizes them to control their families. History shows repeatedly that people will accept their own oppression if they get to oppress someone below them.

Let’s talk about this a bit. TL;DR First and foremost - it’s a lie, that’s not what the study was for. And the lie is told as pictured because contrary to popular belief - these bigots do in fact know about and hate trans men.

Saw there was a new book on "Gothic Italy" and was super excited until I realized they meant the literary genre and not the late antique kingdom.

For #AshWednesday, here is Ælfric's Letter to the Monks of Eynsham @parkerlibcccc.bsky.social CCCC 265, 11th c. This is one of the earlier descriptions of the imposition of ashes. Here are the opening of the Letter w/pretty initials (p237) and the bit about Ash Wed. (p246). Details in 🧵 #medievalsky

Finally saw Captain America Brave New World, thought it was really good. Harrison Ford was particularly well cast, Anthony Mackie stepped up to fill the role really well. The writing was much better than I expected, certainly better than the incoherent mess of the previous Cap film.

When schools are run like businesses, our kids become commodities. We can't let profit-driven interests dictate the future of our children's education. Dont Defund Public Schools #ProudBlue

A peacock with a tail like a hundred worlds pecking on a page of Isidore's De Natura Rerum, made in Salzburg at the end of the 8th century. BSB Clm 14300

Literally all he did was quote someone. Defining criticism of the government as treason is what authoritarians do. Turning a publicly funded news outlet into a state media propaganda machine is what authoritarians do.

The Adoration of the Lamb München, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek Clm 14000; Codex Aureus of St. Emmeram; 879 CE; Westfrankenreich, p.11

Everybody needs to see this beastie peeping through a hole in Isidore. #medievalsky

Guy de Lusignan was likely 37 the year he lost the Battle of Hattin. I have more sympathy with the man now that I'm over 40. Sibylla was 28. I have a LOT more sympathy for her bad choice of husband with that information. I know a lot of people who regret marriages they made in their 20s.

One of the hardest thing about being a medievalist over forty is realizing how many of the figures you study died younger than that

Proposed my first new course in a while. Never liked teaching classical Greece or the first half of Rome, so thought I'd do an "Alexander to Augustus" class. Start with Xenophon as a basis of understanding where Greece is coming from, end with Plutarch.

Is it weird that I just kind of want to read all of Xenophon and base a class on antiquity off of him? He sounds fascinating.

it was bad when the worst poster on my favorite website bought that website and made it terrible but it has been worse having that person also buy my country that i live in

Here is a personal story about class, gender and political orientation that no white NYT pundit in a diner was going to capture but explains so much about Nazi incels wreaking havoc in DC. I was a young assistant professor newly arrived in the city and matched by the usual apps to a staffer 1/

You know what happens when you gut regulations and slash government spending to save money? You get the Flint water crisis.

IN A DEMOCRACY, YOU ARE ALWAYS VOTING FOR THE LESSER OF TWO EVILS. EVEN WHEN YOU LOVE YOUR CANDIDATE. EVEN WHEN YOU ARE THE FUCKING CANDIDATE. When you don't choose the lesser of two evils you are intentionally allowing the greater evil to flourish unchecked. And that makes YOU fucking evil.
