A distributed workforce of reporters is a GOOD thing. It means we have people in different locations and time zones who can hop on whatever comes up. Clustering us all in DC makes no sense.

Looking for former FDA employees for a story I’m working on about food safety. If that’s you, I’d love to talk. You can send me a DM here, find me on signal, or email me at [email protected]. 🙏

“I think it is going to take at least 10 years for American scientific and biomedical research to recover from this.” 😖

Help, I took a break from my computer and now I have a cat in my lap.

You cannot tell if a policy is making things better or making things worse if you simply stop measuring things.

No, “toxins" aren’t to blame for autism. Yes, improved detection is likely why autism rates are rising. Nice to see this nuanced, empathetic and accurate take by @laura-sanders.bsky.social and @thsaey.bsky.social

In Washington and Maine, scientists have ID’d two cases of a rare red meat allergy triggered by tick bites. What’s notable about this? These cases appear to have been caused by tick species never before linked to the allergy, called alpha gal syndrome. www.sciencenews.org/article/tick...

Journalists at @sn-media-guild.bsky.social held a picket to tell @sciencenews.bsky.social that a fair contract isn't rocket science! After 18 months of negotiations, it's time to listen to the workers and give them a fair contract!

I’m excited to share this story on GLP-1 drugs that I’ve been working on for months. It’s about the unconventional (and potentially dangerous) places people have been sourcing their meds. Why would people take that risk? A longish 🧵 www.sciencenews.org/article/weig...

If you’re not tired of dire wolves yet, here’s my take on the story. Featuring this excellent quote from @jacquelyngill.bsky.social “That is no more a dire wolf than I am Wonder Woman.” www.sciencenews.org/article/dire...

Looking for a genetics expert to comment on Colossal’s dire wolves news. Any recommendations? Let me know!

🚨 BREAKING: I'm suing #RFKJr @ #HHS & #JayBhattacharya @ #NIH Canceling medical research grants threatens innovations benefiting ALL Americans, no matter your politics! 🇺🇸 Thanks to my lawyers @aclu.org @aclum.bsky.social @protectdemocracy.org & @cspi.bsky.social Long 🧵 on why I'm suing 👇 1/

This TL;DR on how to leak to a journalist is helpful: “— Personal devices only — Don’t leak from work, on a work device, or from work Wi-Fi — Use Signal and Signal’s camera — The reporter should recreate any image you leak before displaying it to the public”

“It’s chaos—absolute chaos,” said one NIH senior scientist watching the firings unfold. By @jocelynkaiser.bsky.social www.science.org/content/arti...

NEW: Researchers have sued the NIH and HHS, alleging that they have engaged in a "reckless and illegal purge to stamp out NIH-funded research that addresses topics and populations that they disfavor" by terminating hundreds of grants, violating the APA, Fifth Amendment and the Separation of Powers.

I wouldn’t call myself a physics person, but dang, this story about the controversy over Microsoft’s qubits chip claim kept me on the edge of my seat. By @econover.bsky.social www.sciencenews.org/article/micr...

"No need to work from pantries for now." Just when you think the situation at health agencies can't get more bizarre, @lizzylawrence.bsky.social reporting surprises us anew. www.statnews.com/2025/03/28/f...

Confirming this scoop by @thesicktimes.bsky.social - an HHS source says that Sen. Todd Young (R-IN), who secured a commitment from RFK Jr. during his confirmation hearing that he'd continue funding long COVID research, intervened.

$34 million in economic loss in my county.

Just got off a call with public health officials on the effects of cuts to HHS. Bottom line: things are looking grim. Some examples of what state and local health depts may see cut: -mobile clinics -immunization services -wastewater testing -text reminder programs -community health worker staff

In 2000, measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. Now, the WHO is advising international travelers to check their vaccine status before traveling here. www.who.int/emergencies/...

Should it really take 500+ days to get a contract? Asking for a friend.

We polled Nature readers to ask if they were thinking of leaving the US for jobs abroad. Three-quarters of them (who said they were US-based scientists) said yes. 🧪 www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Important read if you ever shared your DNA with 23andMe.

Just taking a moment to share a pic of what may be the most glorious tree I’ve ever seen

"Angry, disappointed, frustrated"--Scientists were making progress on vaccines and antivirals for the next pandemic--until this week, when the Trump administration abruptly told them to stop. Here's my story with @apoorvanyt.bsky.social Gift link: nyti.ms/43Xz77q

We’ve had pig kidneys and hearts transplanted into humans. Now, surgeons have transplanted a gene-edited pig liver into a brain-dead person. But pig livers aren’t likely to replace human donor livers anytime soon, researchers say. www.sciencenews.org/article/tran...

Always grateful for scientists who speak to reporters!
