Are you working with geospatial data, or have you been wondering why we even use it? Then, this article might be for you. Introducing & showcasing its ubiquitous use. Exploring DuckDB's spatial capabilities, transforming complex geographic analysis into simple SQL queries. Hacking on Foursquare.

A bit of a different style of video on my YouTube channel this time—several folks reached out asking about my travel setup for coding and content creation. Everything has to fit in this bag. youtu.be/nJgVSI-5kDU

Based on my highly sophisticated (and totally unbiased) survey, I can confidently conclude: clicking is painful. Stay tuned for more #databs questions.

🚨 New getting started with @duckdb.org and @motherduck.com ! Because yep, the flock keeps growing! 🐥 Still haven't tried the Duck side? This is your chance - I put a lot of effort on this one. youtu.be/WYV8hvJOAQE You know what to do with your weekend now. #databs #dataengineering

According to the AWS Redshift team, 94% of workloads don’t exceed 10 TB. I look at my 4 TB SSD and wonder: Do we really need massive data centers for this? Do we really need distributed compute? Our idea of “big” #databs has changed, but most design decisions remain a decade old.

I automate content curation. One I enjoy is a weekly newsletter summarizing #databs subreddits. It was Data Subreddit Chef, but I dropped it. Substack had too many manual steps. Now it’s back on subtldr.com 🎉 Planning to make it dynamic so users can pick subreddits & maybe offer it as a service

62% of my network enjoys living on the edge—parsing CSVs without a schema. 31% have spent one too many nights debugging inconsistent delimiters. 7% are still waiting for their XML parser to finish loading.

Normal people on weekend : do laundry, vacuum, wipe down surfaces, take out the trash, and tidy up clutter. Me : @duckdb.org

Hey #duckdb folks, I'm currently looking for the next guests for Quack&Code (www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...) If you have a nice DuckDB (and/or MotherDuck) story you want to share, feel free to quack in my DM!

We're testing a new DuckDB install experience for Linux and MacOS: curl install.duckdb.org | bash Happy to hear feedback!

Once again, I was faced with the unfortunate reality of parsing CSVs. Fortunately, @duckdb.org's excellent work on their CSV sniffer made the process much easier. motherduck.com/blog/csv-fil...

So you want to replace junior software engineers with AI? Cool. In 3 years, when you’re desperately searching for senior who never got the chance to gain experience, don’t come crying. You’re not “optimizing costs”—you’re starving your own talent pipeline. Enjoy the shortage. #softwareengineering

DuckCon 6 AMS @duckdb.org conference highlights

Folks are being really creative to add Delta write support to @duckdb.org

I'm already quacking in Amsterdam, who's coming to the DuckCon organized by @duckdb.org ? #databs

I wanted to cancel my Grammarly subscription, went through their AI chatbot : - Me: “Hi, Can I get a refund, accidental renew...” - Chatbot: “Forgot to cancel?” → Clicked - Chatbot: “You’re eligible for a refund. Process now?” - Me: “Yes.” [PayPal email: Refund ✅] Full refund in under 2 min 🤯!

A quick reminder: if you’re interested in #duckdb content, I’m regularly curating a fantastic list on daily.dev More than 40+ blogs have been shared in the past 3 months 🤓 You can join the DuckDB squad here: dly.to/jA8UM2JcaMH #databs

I’ve said it before, but this is no longer the case: - The data processing war (Snowflake vs. Databricks vs. others) - The table format war (Iceberg vs. Delta Lake vs. others) The real battle now is the CATALOG/METASTORE war. And BigQuery just dropped another feature yesterday that proves this point

#docker stack may be the best solution for hosting my next side projects.

After my yabai + sketchybar video setup gained some attention, many people asked me about Aerospace. If your window management on macOS is still a mess, Aerospace is the best tiling window manager to get started with on macOS. youtu.be/gjR2eiomRwo

What's the most scary about thing about #databs? I'll start : 1) Silent pipeline failures 2) Dashboard that no one looks at 3) Data pipelines refreshed every hour where data is looked once a month $$$ What keeps you awake at night?

3 timeless unsexy tech skills for 2025 to level up as #softwareengineer and stand out as #dataengineer : 1️⃣ Makefile: Streamline dev workflows & automate CI/CD tasks. 2️⃣ Bash: Quick automation for efficiency. 3️⃣ Git: Mastering more than basics saves headaches in big teams.

If you’re unsure whether to improve your coding skills in 2025 with all the AI overlords, you can still be more productive at writing—anything. And for that, we have VIM motions. Trust me, you won't regret it.

Are GitHub stars just vanity metrics? Most of the time. 1️⃣ Stars ≠ users. I’ve starred projects but never used them—bad READMEs lose users. 2️⃣ Stars = bookmarks. I’ve starred & forgotten, yet the count stays. 3️⃣ Buzz ≠ growth. Stars can be hyped or gamed For >1yr or 5k stars repo, they lose meaning.

Amsterdam, I'm back! And with the team 💪

Back online after a social media break for 2 weeks. All social media platforms should take a holiday and just shut down. The more you disconnect, the fresher your perspective becomes. It inevitably makes you more creative and productive.

Having your content serve as inspiration for someone to create something in ANOTHER language is probably one of the best rewards!

Yes, I’m putting this out on a Friday to make sure you take a break and don’t get any work done.

The holidays are perfect for mixing things up! 🦆 I made a fun duck game to help you disconnect—and @motherduck.com's running a competition! 🏆 Hit the leaderboard to win cool duck swag. 🎮 Play here: game.motherduck.com

Many web developers overload OLTP databases due to limited knowledge of OLAP databases and their benefits. @mehdio.com explains OLAP databases, when to move data, and how to connect your @vercel.com app to MotherDuck using its native integration. motherduck.com/blog/why-web...

I'm a man of simplicity. I don't know any other data stack that gets you from 0 to 1 as quickly... Except Excel. New vid 🎥: youtu.be/bbclf8ibIwM #dataengineering #databs

I recently started using ChatGPT to get ideas for my video thumbnails and make sure they send the right message. Fun how creative you can be with some use cases. If an AI can't figure this out, an human probably won't be 😅

Job market is thought for SE and it won't get better. With software engineering becoming more accessible to learn, I think we’re entering an era where being technically skilled isn’t enough. You’ve got to work on your personal brand, little by little, to stand out and show who you are.
