Hey @thehighsign.bsky.social Found this info fascinating. Grateful to @ryancoogler.bsky.social for releasing his film in so many formats.

Russia sentenced a 19-year-old woman to nearly 3 years in a penal colony for an anti-war poem www.cnn.com/2025/04/18/e... This is what Trump is preparing the ground to do in the USA with impunity. Except critics will be shipped to prisons overseas out of reach of US law. Dissent while you still can.

Bananas.

Today marks two years since the start of the senseless war in Sudan that has spiralled into the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. www.nrc.no/news/2025/ap... 1/4

This is what I’ve been saying for a week or two now; this issue is not about immigration. The MAGA wing of the party is trying to make it that, but the majority of the country understands that this is actually about bigger things; the right to a fair day in court and the prospect of tyranny.

This is a nice thread about The Onion. Thank you for saying nice things, and I can confirm the premise: If you pay your staff well, and you allow them to do what they're great at, it works better than chasing algorithms. The art is better, the truth is found easier, and—bonus!—the revenue is better.

The emergence of Anastasia and her one-rabbit performance of La Bunhème:

Q: "How do you respond to Governor Newsom?" Sen. Van Hollen: "I think Americans are tired of elected officials or politicians who are all finger to the wind...Anybody who can't stand up for the Constitution and the right of due process doesn't deserve to lead."

Sign of the day…

The viruses thank you

After federal troops forced a fugitive slave named Anthony Burns back into slavery in the 1850s, one Bostonian wrote, “we went to bed one night old-fashioned, conservative, Compromise Union Whigs and waked up stark mad Abolitionists.” The abuse of power radicalizes people. We are seeing that now.

Two-thirds of voters at Indiana University Bloomington’s sole on-campus polling site used their university ID to vote last fall. This week, the state banned students from using these IDs for voting.

I got an email yesterday afternoon that my NSF SPRF Postdoctoral Fellowship was terminated. My grant focused on testing interventions to address online misinformation and I was 8 months into a two year appointment.

EXACTLY federal research grants arent giant slush funds that universities use for whatever- they are (incredibly competitive) contracts for specific scientists to do specific research it's literally all of us chipping in to hire some of the best experts to cure cancer in kids and such

The federally-funded research university is almost surely the single greatest American invention ever. And it probably has some of the best ROR in federal spending, both in its contribution to the US specifically, but also to the greater world overall. I doubt anything comes close.

BREAKING: A court ruled that our case challenging RĂĽmeysa Ă–ztĂĽrk's unlawful detention should move forward in Vermont, instead of Louisiana, and that ICE must transfer her there. Nobody should be shipped to a detention facility halfway across the country for writing an op-ed.

BREAKING: We filed a class action lawsuit today to protect international students in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, and Puerto Rico from the Trump administration's abrupt and unlawful termination of their legal status.

Actually. How the US benefitted from outsourcing its research interests to experts in universities.

President Trump is threatening to withhold federal funds from public schools to force them to eliminate programs that ensure every student is able to thrive. So we're taking him to court.

"It would be hard to find a federal investment that has generated larger or clearer returns than the National Science Foundation fellowships." www.thebulwark.com/p/trump-scie...

If you're an NSF grantee who receives notice of cancellation per today's announcement, please get in touch here or via Signal mzahneis.09.

I am still thinking about how students from Parkland were present at the FSU shooting yesterday. And how a young person surviving not one but two mass shootings is something that could only happen here in this country. Because this is what freedom looks like in the United States. #MomSky

This is: (a) correct; (b) a demonstration of Van Hollen's political skills, which are stronger than most of us realized; (c) a sign to other politicians that bold action will bring outsized attention, as it has with Booker and AOC.

Sam jumps out of planes and into fires to fight them. We generally try to keep people on the plane and out of fires. But we both love our unions. And we love #fightingoligarchy ✊ #flyunion @nffe.bsky.social @afacwa.org

Observe that the one that complied and the one that didn't comply are treated exactly the same way.

New(ish), from me: Andor returns on April 22. The first season detailed how bureaucracies in a totalitarian regime function, what is the toll of living under such regimes, and what causes people to rebel. Those themes feel more salient than ever. 🧵 donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-return...

WOW. The Trump administration's efforts to punish immigrants by abusing the Social Security database ended up leading to a U.S. citizen being kicked off of Social Security because they accused him of being undocumented!

Right now, I’m paying attention to news from the shipping and trucking industries of leading indicators of how bad things are going to get. And the trends are alarming. Beginning to stock up on essentials *now*.

“Mack Trucks will lay off 250-350 workers at its Lehigh Valley Operations plant…
A Mack spokesperson said heavy-duty truck orders “continue to be negatively affected by market uncertainty about freight rates and demand, possible regulatory changes, and the impact of tariffs.”

Who needs AI when you have this

I find myself getting sincerely emotional about this. That he’s, under the circumstances, okay. That his wife and kids know this after an agonizing month without him. That a Democratic politician cared enough to go and see him, even after getting told no at first. Trying matters. Fighting works.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia was illegally abducted and is being held in a notorious prison in El Salvador — barred from contacting his family or lawyers. I’m speaking to the press now after we were denied access to the prison to check on his condition. Tune in:

EVERYONE: “if they deny due process to non-citizens, they can and will deny it to citizens too” SMUG IDIOTS: “I would simply show my birth certificate and clear it all up!” [ICE kidnaps a U.S. citizen] [shows birth certificate to judge] [judge shrugs] “sorry, can’t help u”

Time to screw your courage to the sticking place, Senator.

Trump threatens to block all 10,000 international students from attending Harvard unless the school turns over student info they’ll use for new visa revocations and deportations. Every day feels like a fresh round of this country stabbing itself in the face. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/17/u...

I won’t share RFK Jr.’s lies about autism. It’s disgusting and dangerous. If he had a shred of decency, he would apologize and resign. Autistic people contribute every day to our nation’s greatness. To every kid with autism, I’m in this fight all the way for you.

Feckless lawless judge says what?

Of course. AmericCorps provides a way for idealistic, compassionate young people to serve their country. Can’t have that under the Trump/Musk kakistocracy.

I am devoting my undergrad class today to explaining to students how universities are funded and administered. Students are giving so much of their time, energy, and money they deserve to know basic facts about higher education policy. #DayofActionforHigherEd @actioninhighered.bsky.social

Tho Trump Adm has claimed that any deal between US and El Salvador to house US detainees would be "classified" or covered by "state secrets privilege," 3 law profs argue in @lawfaremedia.org that a 2022 law actually require disclosure its disclosure to Congress. www.lawfaremedia.org/article/the-...

BREAKING: #AIDS activists are delivering 206 coffins to Marco Rubio’s door at State Department Headquarters, one for every 100,000 lives that are at risk, and countless more besides, because of his decimation of PEPFAR

When Nixon privately tried to sic the IRS on perceived opponents, it was an impeachable offense. Team Trump is now taking similar steps in public. As Chris Murphy recently said, "Just because the corruption plays out in public doesn't mean it's not corruption." www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddo...

Corrupting official statistics is a signature tactic of authoritarian regimes

3 things autistic kids will actually never do: 1. Pick up a roadkill bear from the side of the road and put it in their van to eat 2. Realize they could get in trouble for eating the bear 3. Leave it in Central Park to frame a cyclist for its murder

After 21 years at my dream job, I’m very sad to announce my early retirement from the National Institutes of Health. My life’s work has been to scientifically study how our food environment affects what we eat, and how what we eat affects our physiology.
