After 3 surgeries, a blood clot, infection & being hospitalized for over a week, the moment I was discharged I rushed to the airport so I could get on a plane to DC & vote NO on Republicans’ disastrous budget plan. Rep. Pettersen traveled from Colorado with her newborn son so she could vote NO. 🧵

I completely missed that Republicans introduced a bill to increase the endowment tax from 1.4% to 21%. If passed, Harvard would go from paying ~$35m to $525m/yr in federal taxes (that’s 8.2% of its current operating expenses)

As an editor and an American, I am doubly horrified:

Ah, I’ve been eagerly awaiting this book’s release date. Sometimes, it pays to be many times zones ahead of my homeland. #amreading @darlingaxe.com

To recap, Trump: -Forced out the FAA chief at Musk's insistence -Imposed a hiring freeze that reportedly included air traffic controllers -Fired the TSA head and gutted a key aviation safety committee -Blamed the DCA crash on DEI This is disastrous leadership.

Trump put a freeze on hiring air traffic controllers and, on Musk’s instruction, fired the FAA chief early without replacing him. This should be the only thing Dems are saying today. They should all be out on media saying this.

"Does your dog bite?" "No, it's worse... she judges"

What the president has tried to do in the last 24 hours is illegal. His actions threatened millions of Illinoisans' access to health care, food, and even fuel to heat their homes. I will stay vigilant in defense of IL because if you come for my people, you come through me.

"Post it on your social media." Thank you, Mr. Acosta.

The most common question I receive is how everyday citizens can help in the fight for democracy. My advice, take the first step, start with something small and see what works for you. Here are ten things all of us can do. www.democracydocket.com/opinion/10-t...

Eeesh. I was awake for about seven minutes today before I wanted to go back to bed. Even from 7000 miles away, this is going to be a long, terrible, sad four years.

I finished my second full novel draft of the year this week, and I’m on to the third. Writing zero drafts is changing my writerly life!! 🎉 #amwriting

After months of a creative writing slump, I tried zero drafting and finished a complete draft of a new novel in six days. It’s the roughest of rough drafts, but the full story is there. #amwriting

My brilliant husband being brilliant, as per usual:

Kudos to the Carter memorial solo flag bearer who is about to blow right down the street, poor guy

holy fuck this week is like “happy 2025, welcome to the apocalypse”

I'm launching a new career as a demotivational speaker (thanks to everyone who got in touch this morning - it's nice to hear it strikes a chord) www.irishtimes.com/life-style/p...

Preparing the guest room. But not for this cat.

Hello, Bluesky, it’s good to be back.

My #NaNoWriMo novel is past the 10k mark — and it’s now a Christmas novel. 🎄⭐️🫣We’ll see if it stays that way.

I’m doing NaNoWriMo, as per usual, but this year I’ve started with no plan and asked a few writerly friends to send me names and images to include in my story. Mostly, they’re brilliant — but one smarty pants sent me this photo! It’s going to be an interesting month!

Sylvia Plath, at Smith College in Northampton, Mass., 70 years ago. She was 21 in this photo.

Ah, expat life is tricky sometimes — I'm setting up weekend zooms with friends 8, 9, and 11 time zones away. 5:30 a.m. it is, then.

A friendly reminder for my morning of writing:

Feeling a bit homesick (🇺🇸living in 🇦🇪) so I went for a Saturday comfort breakfast, chicken and waffles. My 🇬🇧 husband is appalled.

Happy Autumn Equinox!

My client just sent me this photo of the view from her backyard in Utah, and it made me instantly homesick for 🇺🇸. #expatlife

What I'm writing about today: Here are poets Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes on their honeymoon in Paris in the summer of 1956 — though their marriage was still a secret from nearly everyone. At the last minute, she asked him to remove his wedding ring for the photo — just in time.

Well, good evening, BlueSky world, from Abu Dhabi.
