#fledging

That moment when you’ve passed the casting audition and find out who else you’ll be working with. Character design can be a messy business…tricky to keep everyone happy. #onthedrawingboard

Wonder what he’s thinking? We all have stories. #peoplewatching

Interesting cuckoo fact: Apparently cuckoos lay between 12-22 eggs…all in different nests. Around 20% never hatch. No wonder their eyes bulge. (Well they do in this drawing). #birdlife

Today I’ll be mostly rolling around with my toy. Life of a tiger. From DO YOU SEE THE TIGER? Written by @philipardagh.bsky.social Published by @walkerbooksuk.bsky.social Out now!

* Release the tiger! * Swipe for a quick flip through. Yes, DO YOU SEE THE TIGER? is publishing today in the UK. Written by the brilliant @philipardagh.bsky.social and published by the fine folk at @walkerbooksuk.bsky.social Huge thnx Philip & Walker, a wonderful project. Available from today!

We live in exciting - and stripy - times, @mellingart.bsky.social!

Psst. Exciting HEADLINE NEWS tomorrow involving this tiger. Can’t say much more until then or I risk the wrath of @philipardagh.bsky.social who I believe has some vague connection although details escape me. @walkerbooksuk.bsky.social are also involved. So remember; Thursday 1st May…TIGER.

Phone doodle.

Slightly horrified my average daily screen time last wk was 5 hrs 14 mins! But giving myself a break as I’ve been working from my iPad. I also had a judgmental glance from someone on my walk yesterday, was actually using my bird app to identify a cheerful bird. So i have excuses. Still 5hs14mins!

Daddy cool. From JUST LIKE MY DADDY (2017) (Original title Just Like My Dad, 2002).

Been watching this great tit tear up my mossy lawn all week. (And yes, mossy not messy).

Noodling around with existing scans recently. I remember once reading that humans smell in black & white and dogs smell in technicolour. #ruffles

Just a random badger (from way back). Still hanging around, looking for a picturebook opportunity. That’s the way of things with sketchbook characters. They learn to be patient. (Another one from the occasional ‘neglected sketchbook series.’).

Happy Easter! 🧡 (And please, a little dignity around chocolate if you can…it’s not always about you).

Hot cross bun. (The old ones are the best). Happy Easter weekend!

Bit more tiger. #sketchbook

Tiger fact of the day: Tiger’s have a penchant for iced mocha…its chocolate-flavored iced coffee with espresso, chocolate syrup, and sugar-free oat milk. (Straw optional). Who knew? #tigerfacts

Moody blackcap. Unrequited love? (It’s tough out there).

My latest picbk DO YOU SEE A TIGER? with the brilliant @philipardagh.bsky.social is out on 20th May. Published by the fine folk at @walkerbooksuk.bsky.social I’ll be sharing sneaky peaks and behind the scenes material in the lead up to publication. Exciting stuff - it’s gonna be gr-r-r-eat!

D is for Duck. Wandering among the locals on my morning constitutional then stumbling across this small painting back at the studio. Today is Duck Day! Watercolour. Image size: W9cm x H16cm

When pigeons forget. Spotted this wood pigeon walking around somewhat aimlessly. Could almost hear it mumbling, ‘it’s around here somewhere.’ Happens to me all the time.

More auditioning. Been wanting to have a bird among the main cast - with a speaking role - for ages and think I’ve finally found a spot in my latest book. Not quite there yet with the character design but I’m hovering close by. (No pun intended).

Cast audition. #wip

Drawing wolves. #wip

Let’s start the day with a sensible cup of tea and a bright, optimistic outlook on the world. See how far we get.

A short story. (Of sorts). #drawingstories

Dawn chorus. This perfectly sums up the contrast of the morning chat in our house. (For the record, I’m the chatty one).

Saw my first spring butterfly yesterday. All is well 💚

I adore @mellingart.bsky.social's illustrations, I see more every time I look though his books. From "Goldilocks and the Three Crocodiles", yes, that is a crocodile wearing crocs.

It’s INTERNATIONAL DAY OF HAPPINESS day! This small watercolour sparked a happy memory; seeing this large hare lolloping past me. It stopped, gave me the once over, then left me to it. I painted this when I got home. Seeing and painting that hare made me happy. Nature is a joy 💚

Faces #3 The first one looks really familiar which is funny because they’re all just random doodles.

Getting eye-balled by a duck this morning reminded me of this from a few years back…

A bit more wolf. Preliminary sketches many of which don’t make the final-cut but play their part in getting the story and characters where they need to be. #drawingideas

Celebrating the tawny owl with this quick charcoal sketch. Every evening for the past few weeks I’ve been hearing a male (I presume), going about the noisy business of being a tawny owl this time of year.

Been scratching away at this, on and off for a number of years now…something that may or may not happen. Patience is key in publishing!

More faces. After scuttling home to avoid drawing from life (see last post), I revisited this fun little exercise: drawing random faces quickly. The last one looks a bit like Frankie Howard which is completely by chance! (Assuming people if a certain vintage know who that is).

Cafe man. Full disclosure; I drew this from photos taken at a cafe over the weekend. I’m too self conscious to draw outside in the wild. I’m guessing it gets easier with time. Tips and advice anyone?
