🚨Major US trader StoneX bought millions of dollars worth of gold from a company linked to illegal mining, deforestation and pollution in the Amazon

Most people who politicians think are mad at immigration are actually mad at the things they've long been lied to about as being caused by immigration. The solution is to fix the things they're mad about and dispel the lie, not to lean into the lie harder. That obviously won't work. It can't work.

Come to our event on 2 March! We have a banging line-up of speakers giving readings in support of Palestinian rights and culture, in response to Israel's raid on the Educational Bookshop in Jerusalem last week. Tickets going fast so don't miss out... actionnetwork.org/ticketed_eve...

🚨Now: hundreds of thousands marching for Palestine in London 🇵🇸

5.4 million people get bitten by a snake each year Despite it being a common enough occurrence across sub-Saharan Africa, the region is plagued by ineffective antivenoms – some of which are about as useful as injecting water, experts say

📢 Strikes are sweeping Whitehall! Our members are on strike across the gov 11-13 Feb And then for 1 month from 24 Feb to 25 March 💪 We:re fighting for fair pay, sick pay & an end to the scandal of the 2-tier workforce created by outsourcing It's time to #MakeWorkPay Follow for more updates!

The PCS branch organising this strike is now on Bluesky. You can follow their updates on @pcsunionlondon.bsky.social,

Also what problem is the government trying to resolve? There should be red lines on this which are that digital ID cannot be used for any enforcement purposes and that firewalls should exist between departments. A massive spreadsheet is not a digital ID.

1. Quick 🧵 on the change to policy that, on the face of it, bans refugees from ever acquiring British citizenship. @sonial77.bsky.social has published a short article on Free Movement: freemovement.org.uk/good-charact... And I've done a follow up on my Substack: open.substack.com/pub/wewanted...

Cleaners working at 10 Downing Street and the Cabinet Office are taking strike action from 24 February over pay & conditions, according to sources at their union, PCS. This is ironic considering Keir Starmer's earlier statements that "the days when low pay and cheap labour...must end"

My granddad came here, in migration wave, with 5 kids, racism meant no engineering job, became low paid bus conductor, council house, gran stayed home, 3 more kids. Their kids became headteachers, senior civil servants, nuclear physicists. Who judges whether my grandparents “genuinely contributed”?

Inreased raids and deportations don't "tackle gangs". They do penalize victims though. Throw in the grotesque PR, and inevitably Labour pushes more people underground, makes them more fearful of authorities, and therefore increase risk of exploitation #r4today 1/ www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

Some personal news: I was made redundant from UKClimbing as Editor-in-Chief after 10 years in the company. I'll continue my freelance journalism, but I'm also open to part/ full-time reporting/writing/editing opportunities and story tips. RTs/shares much appreciated. Thank you! www.natalie-berry.com

Natalie's superb piece on the tragedies of Britain's foremost climbing family is our current @thefence.bsky.social cover story. It's one of the finest we've ever published. A brilliant writer and a delight to work with, couldn't rate her more highly. www.the-fence.com/in-the-shado...

Exactly this-linking precarious work and accommodation compounds the power imbalance which underpins all exploitation

How UK unlawfully pursued journalists who exposed the truth about a mass murder Two journalists showed collusion between NI police and loyalist paramilitaries The UK’s response was to spy on them, and then arrest them By me, at @prospectmagazine.co.uk www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/law/th...

Tied accommodation is recognised globally to increase risks of forced labour. Important, recent evidence here from @mellino.bsky.social excellent investigative journalism on agric & care visas which exposes both abusive working conditions & the inaction of gov bodies despite having ample evidence

Thanks for highlighting this Emiliano, Settled regularly provides advice to EU and Ukrainian citizens working on isolated farms and living in caravans

What this Times article ignores is that this is already happenning with agricultural workers and care workers... and it is a human rights disaster. As we reported workers live on farms in uninsulated, cramped, mouldy and unsafe housing. www.thebureauinvestigates.com/stories/2023...

The Daily Express has now corrected its false claim about "illegal migrants" in London. My @ipso.co.uk complaint against the Telegraph, for not publishing a full, front-page correction of their scaremongering, ignorant story, is with @ipso.co.uk. The Telegraph continues to lie about the facts.

Outsourced workers across several government departments are on strike over pay and conditions. The irony is that one of those departments is Business and Trade, which is the lead department for the employment rights bill. www.pcs.org.uk/contact-us/p...

This is a detailed and nunanced history of Hamas, and an antidote to the somewhat flattened version we tend to get in the west. It's long, but definitely worth your time. www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

Was just disinvited by @bbc5live.bsky.social to a discussion of Brexit 5 years on- on the entirely reasonable/correct grounds that I know what I am talking about and would give an expert, objective view. What they actually wanted was a "hard Remainer" (to balance a know-nothing Brexiteer). FFS.

We went undercover with @tortoisemedia.bsky.social and exposed the shocking biases of a court expert, whose advice had been pivotal in the removal of children from their mothers’ care

Immigration doesn't increase crime (overall/average). But regularising unauthorised migrants does *reduce* crime.

NEW: Roman Abramovich has one of the longest yachts in the world, complete with 24 guest cabins, swimming pools, helipads, and a disco hall Turns out, the former Chelsea FC owner managed to evade millions in tax due in connection with the use of his yachts 👇

I think we should take this story from the Times today (and picked up by many other outlets) with an enormous pinch of salt for two reason (mini thread): www.thetimes.com/uk/media/art...

American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) statement on the arrest of Ali Abunimah — founder of The Electronic Intifada website — by Swiss authorities: “Speaking out against injustice in Palestine is not, and should never be considered, a crime.” adc.org/ali-abunimah/

Former seasonal agricultural workers have gathered outside the Home Office today to protest working conditions on farms and better modern slavery protections. Organised by @uvwunion.bsky.social Landworkers Alliance and Libera.

Everything in our investigations points to the dire need for greater regulation, not less, as the rich and powerful do more or less whatever they want and the ordinary citizen (and taxpayer) suffers. It’s hard to imagine the thinking that’s led to this

Time and time again in my investigations I find under funded, under powered regulators who are run roughshod over by the venal and the malfeasant. Shudder to think what would happen if these weak regulators were scrapped altogether.

📦 Our first starter pack! Fed up with clickbaity local news sites? Here's a list of independent locals doing it differently:

All children and adult survivors of child sexual abuse deserve better than being treated as a political football. This letter was from 2023, the need for responses to child sexual abuse to be survivor-centred, inclusive and evidence-based holds today.
