Having been to the Colosseum twice this year, & found it unexpectedly impactful, I ❤️ this thread. (was told too that Rome used to have 100s of 12th/13thC towers, one of which was inside the Colosseum (Torre delle Milizie, albeit shortened in height, is a surviving example behind Trajan's market)

For me, the most incredible artefacts from the ancient world are the letters people wrote on clay tablets and sent to one another over thousands of years in Mesopotamia, going back to more than 5,000 years ago.
