This article in the @denvergazette.com quotes a think tank official who supports the National Weather Service firings as a cost-saving measure, but the article is silent about the possible economic impacts of these cuts. #WxSky #NWS #NOAA 1/ denvergazette.com/news/governm...

Something I’ve been thinking about is this assumption that states will just dramatically expand their emergency management agencies if FEMA is eliminated. Many have pointed out the obvious resource issue there but I’ve also been thinking about the historical context.

NWS firings while not huge in overall numbers break through big because it's a tangible thing for people on a local level. Need to highlight those kinds of stories going forward. Harder to obfuscate like some random foreign aid contract. Detrimental not only to those fired but those in community.

If you worked for 18F and got fired, Group together to start a consulting company. It’s just a matter of time before DOGE needs you to fix the mess they inevitably create. They will have to hire your company as a contractor to fix it. But on your terms. I’m happy to invest and/or help

That little black spec on the right hand side of this infographic is the total budget of the NWS. How is eliminating positions that exponentially increase economic dividends through enhancing commerce and mitigating/preventing disasters saving money or eliminating waste/fraud?

As @bubba0077.bsky.social says, let’s get some private companies that NOAA provides support for to band together and file to protect federal employees.

“They’re our eyes and ears,” said Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Maryland) of the terminated employees. “People will die and others will suffer greatly” without their work, he said.

---Why do we need potato farmers when I can get my fries at McDonald's? I deal with that logic when it comes to weather forecasts, Apps and the layoffs at the National Weather Service. www.forbes.com/sites/marsha...

Journalists from the Philip Merrill College of Journalism here at the University of Maryland are doing a fine job covering this major story in our own backyard. #WxSky #NOAA #NWS

The disrespect shown to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office today was reprehensible and demonstrates something worse than a lack of class. It shocks the conscience. Many have given all in pursuit of a free and independent #Ukraine. Their president did not deserve this.

Words of encouragement and support left by folks in the National Weather Center outside the entrance to the Norman NWS, Storm Prediction Center, and National Severe Storms Laboratory offices. 💙 It’s not just a job. We are a family, a community.

The American public needs to remember why the National Weather Service matters. We have to remind people of the stakes if we don't have a robust and well-resourced Weather Service to warn us of serious risks to life and property. This thread is a reminder. #WxSky 1/

“My weather app does it better!” -Weather Watches/Warnings? NWS -Forecast data? NWS -Observations? NWS -Satellite? NOAA/NESDIS -Futurecast modeling data? You guessed it, NWS (via EMC). -Climatology data? The weather data compiled over a long period by techs. -Outlooks? NWS Food for thought. 💭

Thinking about the good people of @noaa and @nws today. Such a dark day for our nation and our safety.

Welp, I too was one of the NWS probationary folks that got terminated today. 8 years as an AWIPS contractor previously, I finally got the Fed job I had been wanting. Worked on implementing the next generation of capabilities for AWIPS. A lot of promising stuff coming that is now up in the air...

Something that deserves recognition: At federal labs such as NOAA’s NSSL, ESRL, or EMC, most employees are first hired on as contractors through a company or cooperative institute. After several years, many get “promoted” by being hired as Feds. These are the “probationary employees” getting fired

Every single individual in the weather enterprise should be utterly furious today.

I don’t think a lot of people outside science understand the symbiotic relationship we have between public, private, and educational sectors. We all lean on each other for help, support, and R&D. In most cases, we aren’t competing so much as all rowing different boats in the same direction.

As the wife of an NWS Met, I am heartbroken by what is being done. I get up each day and call as many reps as possible. These men and women go to work each day to protect life and property. They don’t care about political affiliation, net worth, or where you are from. They just want to protect us.

I will mourn the day that our knowledge, research, and passion in the Weather Service is ever disposed of in favor of that used for the gain of a business or individual. I kept my job today, but I will miss everyone else who was motivated by the greater good of all people.

i was a part of the probationary employee firings at the national weather service today. being a part of the environmental modeling center is all i have ever known in my career. it is where i always wanted to be.

To everyone at NOAA fired today: You are an incredible human being. You signed up to serve the public. I deeply appreciate what you've given to your team, to NOAA, to our country as a whole. Your firing is unconscionable. It runs counter to the values we stand for. And we will stand up for you.

Last Tuesday, I was set to give a talk on 'climate change in the Northeast' at a retirement home but had to cancel due to hourly job threats. After nearly two weeks of overwhelming uncertainty, today it happened. I was fired from my dream of working at NOAA. I'm so sorry to everyone also affected.

The mass firing of both new hires and recently promoted senior staff within #NOAA, including mission-critical and life-saving roles at the National Weather Service (#NWS), is profoundly alarming. 1/11

All probationary federal employees at NOAA’s EMC that’s responsible for keeping all US weather model systems running have been fired with 1 hours notice. And that includes me and colleagues. We will not go quietly because we care about the NOAA mission to protect the public.

The U.S. has two tsunami warning centers, both operated by NOAA. Employees were terminated from these centers today. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center covers Hawaiʻi, and now it is less safe to be near the beach. www.tsunami.gov

Does not make a lick of sense. #WxSky wapo.st/4hX87ZQ

Difficult to express how reckless and foolish this act of institutional vandalism is, the day before the start of meteorological spring and five days prior to a possible East Texas/Dixie Alley tornado outbreak. #WxSky #NWS
