Ah-HA, here’s the paper we’ve all been waiting for - the USDA’s analysis of the H5N1 outbreak in cattle. TLDR: they say it was a single spillover, probably in December 2023, with up to 4 months of undetected local transmission before the first official reports. (More to follow, still reading.) 🧪

We’ve all heard of the five tastes our tongues can detect—sweet, sour, bitter, savory-umami, and salty. But the real number is actually six, because we have two separate salt-taste systems. 🧪

“There’s this widespread misunderstanding that the only major threat — or the biggest threat by far — to sharks is the trade in shark fins and shark fin soup, and that hasn’t been true since the ’90s,” says David Shiffman, a marine conservation biologist who wrote the book “Why Sharks Matter.” 🌎🦑🧪

Mediterranean Gull 3VA2 was ringed as a chick on De Kreupel in 2017 and has since bounced back and forth across the Southern Bight and English Channel. I saw it in Southend-on-Sea on Monday, sporting a nice hood! #EssexBirding 🧪🌍

The large increase in sea surface temperatures in 2023-24 was anomalous, but not completely unexpected when applying climate models, according to research in Nature. https://go.nature.com/3R5Hmqk 🧪 🌊

Continuing to paint all the #2025mmm contestants. Today is the tayra (an omnivorous, arboreal mustelid with a South and Central American distribution) facing the spotted-necked otter, an aquatic carnivore found in Africa! This might be a really close match! 🦊🧪🐡 #watercolor #mammalart #wildlifeart

Some excellent info to be familar with, e.g., “Insurance costs are rising dramatically faster than mortgage payments. From 2013 to 2022, insurance as a percentage of mortgage payments more than doubled, rising from 7-8% to over 20% of mortgage costs.” firststreet.org/research-lib...

Blanket dismissals, like blanket pardons, are generally not good ideas. In industry I saw profitable locations shuttered but it took years to see the bulk of the outcomes.

#China approved funding for a #deep-sea station in South China Sea. They expect the station should be running by 2030. Not enough people are talking about this 🌊🪨🧪 sc.mp/pdtqq

Just had a sample of the Eaton Fire ash that is in my driveway run on the department XRF. Is there titanium (new house paint)? Yup. Lead (old house paint)? You betcha. Heavy metals? Check. Treat that ash like it's toxic folks (because it is)

Earth set a new record for atmospheric moisture in 2024: about 7% more than in 2000. This extra moisture contributed to some extreme rainfall damage, like the $79 billion cost of Hurricane Helene, $20 billion cost of Storm Boris in Europe, and $22 billion seasonal floods in China.
