Let's have another #AncientDEI for #AncientBluesky: Hippolytus! My sex-repulsed ace boi, son of an Amazon and a Greek, devotee of Artemis. His fool of a father Theseus called down Poseidon's curse on him for the suicide of Theseus' far-too-young wife, Phaedra, who had fallen in love with Hippolytus.

I talked to brilliant historians, including @roelkonijn.bsky.social @alexvont.bsky.social @goingmedieval.bsky.social @benwritesthings.bsky.social @janjancl.bsky.social & @luisherran.bsky.social, to better understand how the Trump admin compares with past regimes, from antiquity to the 20th century:

I was consulted for this & I’m quoted at length! I discuss the reign of the emperor Justinian as a time full of possible precedents for our current political moment.

Country #40 of my Cooking Round the World challenge is COSTA RICA 🇨🇷 Caribbean Rice & Beans is, well, rice & beans cooked in coconut milk & flavored with onions, garlic, curry powder, sazón completo, thyme, habanero peppers, & Salsa Lizano, plus red bell pepper & celery for extra nutrition.

Publication day! My article 'Manuel I Komnenos’ policy towards the sultanate of Rum and John Kontostephanos’ embassies to Jerusalem, 1159–61' appeared in 'Crusades'. Did John Kontostephanos go to the Holy Land once or twice? I use this to look at Byzantine grand strategy in the mid-12th c.

It feels like I've been waiting forever to use @drdragases.bsky.social's best meme.

I can't quite believe I'm saying this but: I wrote a book! And it's being published this May! It's about Rome, its enduring appeal, the many different ways it has been interpreted, and how understanding this helps us see both the past and the world today more clearly. geni.us/AllRoadsLead...

Country #39 of my Cooking Round the World challenge is CONGO 🇨🇬 Fumbwa is a spinach stew with smoked catfish (I had to use trout), scallions, garlic, tomatoes, red palm oil, chicken broth, & peanut butter. Served with Fufu, a dough ball made of cassava flour, maize flour, & polenta.

Two days left to get the open-access PDF of The Author in Early Christian Literature from @cambridgeup.bsky.social! Share it with all your Bible, Classics, and authorship-loving friends! 🏺 doi.org/10.1017/9781...

We’re thrilled by this development. A lot of hard work by some very good people has gone into creating this new society. If you love the ancient world but want to be challenged and inspired to explore things through a less colonial lens, do give this a read.

What's the current view on the metaphysical system of the Chaldaean Oracles? What articles/book chapters from this century could I look to for the consensus and/or cutting edge?

Hey, people who study Ancient Greek religion; just a brief reminder that the NPAGR collaborative working group exists and we would love to have new members! #ClassicsBluesky

York University recently announced that admissions to the Classics and Classical Studies programs have been suspended for Fall 2025. Classical Studies colleagues and students at York would be grateful for letters of support. How you can help: www.cac-scec.ca/2025/02/supp... AncientBluesky

A piece of exciting news: @christycobb.bsky.social and I's "The Rhetoric and Ethic of Translating and Representing Enslaved Persons in New Testament and Early Christian Studies" was accepted for JSNT! We're hoping it'll benefit the field as we continue to acknowledge legacies of slavery.

In today’s new #PeoplingBlog, Mohamed Kenawi discusses the work of the Endangered Archaeology of the Middle East and North Africa (EAMENA) Project and the important work they are carrying out documenting the endangered heritage of the region: peoplingthepast.com/2025/02/21/b...

#AncientBluesky #Skystorians #RomanHistory Were the Romans really as grumpy as they seem in movies or on TV? They laughed at all manner of stuff, but how did laughter manifest itself in Roman society? Please remember to help yourself to a free sub! open.substack.com/pub/jamescov...

I’m interested in exploring memory in the ancient world, specifically the late empire (2nd century CE). What are some good starting points on this topic? (Reposted due to a typo, mea culpa)

We have a new article up on Bad Ancient all about the Spartan Krypteia! We had to completely redraft sections in light of brand new scholarship that was published as we were working on it, so consider this cutting edge stuff! #AncientBluesky www.badancient.com/claims/krypt...

3-year anniversary of one of the greatest moments of my whole life. Visited the Athenian Agora when it opened, had the place virtually to myself. Sat down by the temple of Hephaestus to enjoy the tranquil scenery when HEPHAESTUS HIMSELF took feline form & offered his blessing by sitting on my lap.

More narrowly, the book I'm completing right now focuses on how representations of "Rome" in popular media (movies/tv/games/music videos/novels) are shaped by contemporaneous ideas about gender and sexuality. What it means to be a Debauched Corrupt Roman woman is very different in 1951 than 2020.

Today on Ancient Office Hours, Dr. @jldraycott.bsky.social , a Roman historian, archaeologist, and lecturer at the University of Glasgow, discusses ancient medical practices including skincare and assistive technologies, classical reception in video games, and writing her book Cleopatra’s Daughter.

We need more analyses of ancient history like this one

So I'm trying to see something. A couple of years ago we have published this little volume on monasticism and the city - with a focus on the Mediterranean. Since then it has made its way into some syllabi - but did you have any experience using it in teaching? www.cambridge.org/core/element...
