Many of the administration policies are done in name of cost cutting but turn out to be more about disruption than saving. Another great example is that they have fired FDA staff paid by industry user fees.

Backdoor NIH funding freeze may be in the works. Some conflicting reports, but communications freeze may be stopping NIH's ability to issue new grants-whether intentional or not. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Statement from ACS CAN on workforce reductions at HHS. Cuts included staff at the FDA Center for Tobacco Products, which is fully funded by external use fees--in other words cuts there impact work, but don't save the taxpayer anything! www.fightcancer.org/releases/sig...

New stats out on cancer in African Americans from the American Cancer Society. Making progress, but disparities remain. Data like this may be hard to come by in the future due to the administration's policies toward data collection. pressroom.cancer.org/CancerStatis...

You don't have to be an economist to see shortages coming. 70% of generic sterile injectable drugs still losing $ by 3rd year and now we're going to see tariffs of somewhere between 10% and 25% making payback even worse. Who is going to sign up for that business model? aspe.hhs.gov/reports/roi-...

A call to the NIH clinical center this morning indicated NCI trials are accepting new patients.

Improved quality of life is a huge win. Patients aren't just survival stats, they are people who want to enjoy their lives as best as possible.

The Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP) website has gone dark. Over $500 million in annual cancer research. Does this mean it is being cut? For more on the program www.fightcancer.org/sites/defaul...

Increased prices probably the least worry in the pharmaceutical industry because of tariffs. Highly likely we'll see shortages on generic drugs. www.statnews.com/2025/02/02/t...

Clinical trial eligibility can be inherently biased. Duffy null describes a phenotype common in those of African descent that makes it seem like they are at risk for infection when they are not and therefore keep Blacks out of #clinicaltrials ashpublications.org/blood/articl...

After watching RFK Jr. hearing, I've observed he can cite problems everyone agrees are problems (chronic disease), poor health in kids, but then pivots to pretend we don't know why (or suggests some secret ingredient causes it).

RFK Jr erroneously claims no HHS secretary has focused on chronic disease. The Affordable Care Act set up a prevention fund to fight chronic disease but Republicans repeatedly attacked it and raided it for funds for other priorities.

Happy Kansas Day!

Money concerns keep many out of cancer #clinicaltrials, but financial support can fix that. ACS CAN was joined by 21 other orgs asking HHS to create a safe harbor from the Anti-Kickback Statute so that more sponsors would provide such support. www.fightcancer.org/policy-resou...

Recent HHS report finds that 70% of generic sterile injectables aren't profitable by three years after launch. Economics drives drug shortages--which is why most made in low-cost countries. Tariffs will likely make shortages worse. Buckle up... aspe.hhs.gov/reports/roi-...

Much is made of the crime stats in Washington, DC, but as a former resident, one of the events that shook my sense of safety the most was Jan 6. I certainly won't forget.

Drugs can be lifesaving, but some people metabolize them differently and can be killed by drugs meant to save. There are proactive tests, but too few patients receive them. ACS CAN is working to ensure coverage of these tests aren't a barrier. www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTcg...

Welcome @acscan.bsky.social to Bluesky! ACS CAN is the nation's leading cancer advocacy group, working to end cancer as we know it, for everyone.

I left X months before the election not for a protected echo chamber, but rather because my feed on X had slowly morphed into ads and clickbait that held no value for me. The news and conversation on science and oncology policy had disappeared or gotten buried amongst all the noise.
