Power, who died at just 44-years-old, is wonderful in the title role, carrying off the duel personalities with aplomb, flashing that Tyrone Power smile and displaying every bit of the charisma that made him such a huge star; the last idol. My Letterboxed review... #FilmSky boxd.it/9vDmHl

"I want to watch an adaptation of Poe's THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER." "Which one?" "The one from 1928." "Which one?" "The really experimental one." "Which one?" "The one that went all surreal with its cinematography." "WHICH ONE????"

Brutal & disgusting - nobody kills the messenger

Described by Mark Kermode as ‘the Citizen Kane of British pop movies’, the 1975 SLADE IN FLAME comes to UK Dual Format (Blu-ray & DVD) and Digital platforms from the BFI on 19 May tinyurl.com/24d99mf6

Billy Wilder hired the most beautiful starlets in Paris to play the sex workers in Irma La Douce. Every day the set was jammed with reporters and photographers, until one day Wilder turned on them and snarled, "Where were you bastards when I was making Stalag 17?"

Film-wise: at 9pm, My Cousin Vinny on Comedy Central, The Illusionist on Sky Max or Con Air on Great Movies. At 10pm, Priscilla on BBC4 or Kubrick By Kubrick on Sky Arts. At 11pm, Death Wish on Legend. At 11.40, The Spy Who Dumped Me on Film4. At 11.45, Nine To Five on BBC4 #telly

The Director’s Edition of ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture’ is a brilliant labor of love which recovers a few lost scenes and bits of dialogue, adds new SFX seamlessly matching the style of the original, and uses subtle edits to fix the pacing. A rock-solid Trek movie. < thread >

July is a good month for Western fans at Eureka. High Noon is coming to 4K UHD and East Germany’s first Western, The Sons of Great Bear, is making its home video debut in the UK. Also a good month for me – High Noon is an all-timer and I’ve loved producing all of our DEFA releases so far.

Ideally, we'd love to hear your views on Edge of Darkness but anything at all would be a big help when it comes to the algorithm. Many thanks for all your support so far! youtu.be/YShw_4yO03I?...

Here's a 1977 Canada Dry commercial where Jack Elam sings (also featuring Broderick Crawford & Isaac Hayes)

It's always surprising to realise just how much the Cold War underpins late fifties and early sixties sci-fi, from the BBC's space station-straddling radio serial Orbiter X to more early Doctor Who stories than you'd think. Hope Kruschev enjoyed them! timworthington.org/2019/06/20/t...

Coming to 4K UHD in July from @indicatorseries 🇺🇸 SARABAND FOR DEAD LOVERS - 4K UHD LE #FilmSky

Claude Berri’s two-film Marcel Pagnol adaptation on Criterion 4K UHD leads our recommended discs of the week: amzn.to/3YKlxAU

Joined the @cinapse.bsky.social team to write about one of Gene Hackman’s best performances in an all-timer Western from Clint Eastwood. Check out our thoughts on 1992’s UNFORGIVEN below!

Russia’s government paper: “It’s practically a foregone conclusion the US will pull out of Ukraine talks.” Another paper: “The unity of the West is gone. Geopolitically it’s no longer an alliance. Trumpism has destroyed the Atlantic consensus confidently & quickly.” #ReadingRussia

Excellent audio/visual history and analysis of a superb drama. Thanks Neil and John. Something worth indulging in from my bath chair.

Incredible story in the new Private Eye about Tesco executives sitting in on the Daily Mirror’s news conference, and stories favourable to Tesco appearing in subsequent issues of the paper:

A Hill in Korea (1956) on @talkingpicturestv.bsky.social . When I was researching Stephen Boyd, I wrote to George Baker and he was kind enough to reply.

A couple notes here: We all know this is ultimately marketing for the new movie. Steelbook and all. That doesn’t mean this can’t be done well. Same with SOV on Blu-ray, the UHD can offer more disc space and, perhaps, a more genuine presentation depending on source.

Hmmm; that dog is clearly C. Aubrey Smith...

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) dir. Miloš Forman 🎬 Starring Jack Nicholson #botd, this powerful and singular drama is one of my favourite movies of all time. Check out one of our early #podcast episodes where we discuss it. 👇 #filmsky #moviesky #cinema moremovies.co.uk/podcast-epis...

In the Beano this week Bananaman’s enemy General Blight becomes the head of DOPE - the Department of Pure Evil.

Radio 4extra is repeating the Orwell spoof "Nineteen Ninety-Five" first broadcast in the savage jaw of 1984. This and Hitchhikers Guide got me into radio comedy (and parody). www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b...

My favourite Belgian film of the past few years; makes terrific use of Brussels locations (though locals point out that some of the topography is a bit squiffy ie takes the wrong route to the Gare du Nord etc).

Any war film claiming to be above politics and just about fighting for the man next to you is actually echoing an ideology called “trenchocracy” which was born in Italy after the First World War. It was a cornerstone of Benito Mussolini’s fascism.

Sad to read from a post by his husband Liam, that #RogerFoss passed away on Easter Sunday. Roger edited WHAT'S ON STAGE magazine and published TILL THE BOYS COME HOME (1919) about British wartime theatre. But many of us will remember him as Tinker in SEXTON BLAKE. www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdBG...

Since it's Shakespeare's nominal birthday, let's take a moment to reflect on the life of John Thomas Looney - the er... brilliant academic who, having read A Midsummers Dream a dozen times ... came to the conclusion that Shakespeare's plays had been written by Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford 1/6
