I started this article, "The Consent of the Punished," around a decade ago. @peterore.bsky.social and @apdsocy.bsky.social gave me helpful comments back then. Phil Goodman helped me revive it. Dedicated to Michael Burawoy for reasons that I think will be obvious. journals.sagepub.com/eprint/URNB6...

Historical censorship will destroy art, culture, everything The difficulty of obtaining old newspapers makes research hard enough; shutting it down and taking away the joy of research will turn society in a boring husk

You want the new stuff? Well here it is. In "Incarceration, Stigma, and Labor Power," @apdsocy.bsky.social, @jpfaff.bsky.social, Christian Alberg, and I look into the relationship between incarceration and union participation cross-nationally... www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

My NEH fellowship was "DOGE'ed." Now I'm getting emails about a new NEH funding priority to produce statues for the so-called "Garden of Heroes," which I guess is how the funds will now be allocated. 🤡

Forward motion! 🙌

"terminating these African American workers will force them to compete for inferior positions in the private sector, and to do so with a sense of desperation..." I call that "racializing labor discipline."

Holy crap, the latest "New OnlineFirst Articles" email from the Punishment & Society journal is full of bangers! I want to read all of these. Like, here, look at this one: Pelsinger, "Beyond punishment: Towards a framework of transformative accountability"! journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....

"We don’t hear as often about the censorship in the other direction: keeping prisoners’ voices from getting out to the public."

There's an overabundance of bleakness right now, including in higher ed, but I was energized by my trip to Princeton. An excellent workshop organized by the Industrial Relations Section & the Prison Teaching Initiative. Lots of awesome people doing exciting & important work on labor and/or prisons.

This cuts to the bone

Colorado Friends and Family! We still have time to support the passage of HB25-1013 Right to Family and Community Connection. You can call and email your state reps and senators to support the passage of this much-needed bill.

Sarah Staudt, with @prisonpolicy.bsky.social, testifies that, “The research is really clear: increasing visitation for incarcerated people benefits all people in Colorado by improving safety and helping Colorado’s children. We urge the legislature to support House Bill 25-1013.”

Debra Richardson @acluofcolorado.bsky.social: "Children with one or both parents in prison are 6x more likely to go to prison themselves. Social visitation ensures an avenue for parents to remain connected to their families, reducing future misbehavior and potential incarceration of their children."

Three writers from three different state prisons share insights on the NY Wildcat strike.

The Right to Family & Community Connection bill is moving onto the CO House Floor! If you live in the state, please give this action alert a look if you can. actionnetwork.org/letters/tell...

Where does prison labor occur? Which industries rely most heavily on it? And what happens when prisoners refuse to work? You asked, and Bolts answers: boltsmag.org/the-pas...

I'm only just catching up on this developing story out of NY. It's ugly & unfolding. "The fact that people incarcerated in prisons and people working in prisons...universally find them deplorable should cause us to think seriously about what prisons are and what they do." inquest.org/the-hidden-w...

Hey crim or crim-adjacent folks, check out this funding call from @russellsagefdn.bsky.social for causal research on the criminal legal system. My time on another RSF grant was awesome, as was my experience working on one of their journal issues. Highly recommend. www.russellsage.org/funding/caus...

All right! Check out @endslaverycolorado.bsky.social folks. Making good trouble for a good cause! ✊️

There have been many lovely pieces about Michael Burawoy recently, but this brief yet moving article by Ruth Milkam really struck me. jacobin.com/2025/02/mich...

Welcome to the resistance 🐈‍⬛

There are a bunch of great fundraiser albums on Bandcamp today to support CA fire relief efforts, but my favorite offering is definitely @laurajanegrace.bsky.social & Catbite performing Op Ivy 🤟 catbite.bandcamp.com/album/operat...
