Department of Homeland Security officers invading a congressman's offices and arresting a staffer who tried to stop them is very, very bad. gothamist.com/news/homelan...

Do I know any non-statistics* faculty in the US teaching #Bayesian methods to undergraduates? Please comment/share even if you are in close proximity to such educators. I am having a hard time finding them. *By non-statistics I mean, their primary appointment is outside of a statistics dept.

When will our indignation be enough to compel us to do something?

The Gold Standard was a failed economic system we got rid of for many good reasons. I always wonder why people think about the “Gold Standard” being a reference for anything 😌

What do you expect from someone who killed her dog with a gun?

📢 A reminder that the NeurIPS deadline for full paper submission is May 15th (Anywhere on Earth, AOE). We look forward to receiving your work, good luck to all submitting authors!

This is a national tragedy. NSF has done so much good, supported great discoveries, and trained the national STEM workforce. I guess more Project 2025 aimed at unraveling our national educational and research infrastructure. Heartbreaking. Write/call your GOP reps.🧪 www.science.org/content/arti...

Congratulations to the 2025 Class of IMS Fellows! Each Fellow has demonstrated distinction in research in statistics or probability or has demonstrated leadership that has profoundly influenced the field. See the new Fellows here: imstat.org/2025/05/05/c...

A new paper with Alex Cooper and Catherine Forbes "Joint leave-group-out cross-validation in Bayesian spatial models" arxiv.org/abs/2504.15586 (Alex did the hard work for this, and running many cross-validation simulations with spatial models is hard)

I'll talk about Bayesian workflow Thu 24th April 11-12 CEST in Learn Bayes seminar by Karolinska Institutet @ki.se learnbayes.se/events/bayes... (zoom available) The focus will be different to my previous workflow talks (see users.aalto.fi/~ave/videos....). This time more flowcharts and shortcuts

Last Statistics colloquium of the year tomorrow (April 24) at 2:50 PM in LeConte 224! Please join us for this presentation by Dr. Anirban Bhattacharya from Texas A&M!

Very nice opportunity for young researchers to meet and discuss with their peers and senior researchers

I am happy that IMS has joined ASA and ISBA with a new BlueSky account. I am looking forward to other statistical societies making the change. Let's talk research on @bsky.app Congratulations to Grace Wahba for being awarded the 2025 International Prize in Statistics!

New paper w/ Tony Linero on Bayesian causal inference: Independent priors on propensity score & outcome models often imply a strong prior on no *measured* confounding - a prior belief that 1) we rarely hold and 2) leads to bad frequentist performance tinyurl.com/2udmbf6a #statsky

UC Academic Senate’s statement in defense of the university is worth reading in full. It calls for UC to leave no stone unturned or resource unspent to protect their mission, and that this effort should “extend to working together with colleagues at other universities.” #AcademicSky #MomSky 👇🏻
