Defining medieval raptor diets using isotopy - they were feeding differently, notably by "the incorporation of carrion from large mammals as scavenged prey in settlements, a food resource that is largely lacking from modern-day landscapes in large quantities" www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Field work in AUS pt. 3: These last few days have been trial and error. Underestimating distances in the forest, finding the most efficient way to set up traps (see: funky lid construction), getting the electronics right - quite challenging… 😅

After a hearty breakfast, our preparations for fieldwork are in full swing. Preparing butterfly traps, microclimate loggers, and vegetation sheets. Happy to be back in Kenya to work with and receive support from our friends and partners at Pwani, KEFRI, KFS and KWS in Arabuko-Sokoke Forest 🇰🇪🧪🦋🌳🙏

“Compared to autopsy brain samples from 2016, that’s about 50% higher,” he said. “That would mean that our brains today are 99.5% brain and the rest is plastic.” Will we manage to cross 1% plastic by 2030? 🫠😵‍💫

Bird nests made from anti-bird spikes?! 🤯 Hi, I'm a nest researcher 👋 and new here on BlueSky, sharing the craziest #bird nests I've ever found. 👀 Today, I’m sharing my discovery of rebellious birds that build nests out of anti-bird spikes. And honestly, it's like telling a joke... A thread. 🧵

Six years in the making and finally published! Our viewpoint on how to improve tree mortality monitoring. With in-depth discussion on how to improve ground-based monitoring, integration of ground-based monitoring with remote sensing and modelling, and fair and collaborative science: lnkd.in/dJgSRQHt

Today, we started harvesting the @chemodiversity.bsky.social Common Experiment on Tansy at the @jpschnitzlerlab.bsky.social. Lots of young researchers and students are helping out today! Good progress! @mhanusch.bsky.social @thomasdussarrat.bsky.social @marvin-hildebrandt.bsky.social a.o.

Happy to share our recent publication on the relationship of plant chemodiversity and microbiomes: The leaf bacterial community is shaped by maternal effects and environmental conditions rather than terpene chemotype in Tanacetum vulgare: doi.org/10.1111/plb....

Climate change refugia are places to which species can migrate as the climate changes. But there is more to anthropogenic effects than climate change, giving rise to the idea of global change refugia. Find out more in my recent paper in Nature Review Biodiversity 🧪 www.nature.com/articles/s44...

Sphagnum moss - one of the great wonders of the world. ✅Stores more carbon than any other plant genus ✅Prevents drought and severe fire ✅Habitat for unique species including meat-eating plants ✅Gorgeous and magical

Check out the latest Issue of New Phytologist with an article by two of our RU members Meike J. Wittmann and Andrea Bräutigam @andreabraeutigam.bsky.social! How does plant chemodiversity evolve? Testing five hypotheses in one population genetic model nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

We are hiring a professor (assistant/associate) for Transformative Landscape Governance at @tumuenchen.bsky.social. If you're working on landscape planning under global change from a social-ecological perspective, we'd be happy to hear from you!

Well-made introduction to a very timely topic 🌿🐘👩‍💻

oops!... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I will probably be posting about this one a lot in the coming weeks: our special issue on ALAN / light pollution in Biological Conservation is now open for submissions! With @gkalinkat.bsky.social, Jacqueline Degen, and Franz Hölker. www.sciencedirect.com/special-issu...

Have decided that coots are cutest when photographed looking straight in the camera, because at this alternative angle the bird looks like it has seen into the depths of hell 🪶

Happy 25th Anniversary to those who remember...

Thanks for the wonderful birding trip today @robinheinennl.bsky.social With a juvenile white-tailed eagle as my personal highlight 😱

A major challenge in restoration ecology is the widespread belief that there is a correct natural community for any given location, and that identifying it is the first step in recreating it. 1/6

A fan of #Bryophytes? You are (almost) not alone! #Bryophytes rule...they can grow almost anywhere, host a fascinating world of #microbes (incl. #nitrogen-fixing #Cyanobacteria), are key in #biogeochemistry, and hold huge potential for #biotechnology. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

so basically the paleolithic version of "look kids I have a Zoom meeting so can you *please* keep yourselves entertained for the next 30 minutes..." interesting article on identifying children's cave art 🏺🧪 www.science.org/content/arti...

Today is International #Mountain Day. So time to share some impressions from my field sites in the #forefields of Hallstätter #glacier (Dachstein, Austria) and Blaueis (National Park Berchtesgaden, Germany).

In one year, I genetically engineered the boring Arabidopsis into a beautiful ornamental flower 🧬🌹 Here is how and why I gave this model organism a visual upgrade 🧵(1/7)

Here's a starter pack for assembling a versatile collection of Ecology and Evolution journals. Please send suggestions Bookmark it in your browser for quick access to explore their publications (see posts in the pack) or find outlets for your work: go.bsky.app/TivtkJn

Coexistence between plants fascinates me, and how it changes under climate change is one of the most intriguing questions. We investigated this using a novel spatially explicit, trait-based approach in one of the experiments within the #TransPlantNetwork onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

The two @iavs5.bsky.social journals @applvegsci.bsky.social and @jvegsci.bsky.social have arrived here.

And here is another companion postdoc - also 2.5y! - on the palaeogenomic aspects of this project: international.au.dk/about/profil...

Dionysia janthina Primulaceae Yazd province, Iran March 2023 Elevation: 2440m We drove about 900 kilometres (round trip) to photograph this beautiful species.

We have two 3-year post doc positions open for applications at @voltcenter.bsky.social in Copenhagen, Denmark 1⃣ Microbial trait modeling 2⃣ Modeling Ecosystem Dynamics and Atmospheric Feedback t.co/TnyiaYHWGf VOLT is a Center of Excellence and Copenhagen a fantastic city. Contact me if Q's.
