Cool post-doc job opportunity "Language Practices in Media Cultures" at the European University Viadrina @viadrina.bsky.social www.europa-uni.de/de/universit...

Hi! We're new here, but we're so excited! Please tag us in any of your posts with the hashtag #LL16.

How do you drink your terochichimomo? Coffee by any other name... カタカナ used as an English font is a new (to me) source of language play! #writingsystems #katakana #Japanese #typeface #langsky #lingsky

Well, lots going on here in this all-English sticker in Seoul. Part of the political #LinguisticLandscape of Korea.

Writing systems mimicry in the coffee #LinguisticLandscape?

Some good scifi inspiring vibes from this scene in Seoul

Do you want to learn about what happens when languages meet in the mind of a multilingual? We are excited to announce our podcast miniseries: When Languages Meet, a podcast for people interested in languages and multilingualism - coming to you soon on Spotify! 🎙️💬🧠👄 #linguistics #lingsky #langsky

"The court invited people to follow its activities on its LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube accounts." Wish Bluesky was included, but this is a good development. Hopefully, more soon. No official Canadian accounts should exist on X. www.ctvnews.ca/sci-tech/art...

Interesting article, very interesting to see media representations when discussing the topic of Korea's birthrate. Lots here worth thinking about, I think. www.reuters.com/world/asia-p...

Great PhD opportunity in English linguistics here in Bergen! www.jobbnorge.no/en/available...

Hot house flower joins golden spoons as metaphors of class and more in Korea, according to this article. m.koreaherald.com/article/1042...

Good article on an important development. Hope to read more about this union effort soon. m.koreatimes.co.kr/pages/articl...

This is a very kind and unexpected plug for my old book. Thanks James!

First proper article in five years, due to life stuff. If you’re interested in work, automation, the future & imagination this may be of interest #geosky doi.org/10.1177/0263...

"The group's decision to pressure the government to change the rule is rekindling a feud with physician groups over the right to use modern technology." The ongoing conflict between these two medical groups is an absolutely fascinating story. m.koreatimes.co.kr/pages/articl...

"With 88 per cent of the schools slated for closure by the end of 2025 being located in rural areas, concerns are growing over the gap in the school-age population between Seoul and rural areas." www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-as...

Just finished the latest by @quinnslobodian.com. Offers a lot of historical clarity on the right-libertarian/neoliberal to hard right pipeline that's been broadly speculated on. The chapters on IQ and race...

Noise, trash, and more are things that should not be done at night in this small park. Part of the police and park #LinguisticLandscape!

Sometimes the #LinguisticLandscape demands silence Shush!

GOOD! Now Winnipeg! And . . . . MOAR!!! Actually, much more, especially around public transportation.

Volcano Carbonara That's Creamy Spicy! An angry chicken and an erupting volcano create quite an image here. that the blurb about creamy spicy is in English when the larger colorful text is Korean. Time to look more at the noodle #LinguisticLandscape?

Interesting to see a mask sign in Seoul on the subway mentioning the flu prominently but not COVID-19. Regardless, all part of the #LinguisticLandscape and related to the #CoronaLL, I suppose, in some ways . . . . And all in Korean! Interesting!

"However good he was as a player, Mr. Gretzky was an even better semiotician. He instinctively understood symbols" Interesting to see semiotics come up in talk of Gretzky and hockey.

I've seen this sign around a few construction sites in Seoul now. Would love to know the story behind it because the #LinguisticLandscape here is quite unusual!

"For my stuffed meatballs, I fill them with kimchi and use the excess juice from the fermented vegetables to enrich the soup stock. Along with some shoyu-kōji (Aspergillus oryzae mold flavored with soy sauce), it brings a kakushi-aji (hidden flavor) that adds an umami moreishness."

This is a really interesting issue and one of the reasons why so many young people are so eager to find employment with a leading corporation rather than a small or medium sized company. The pay gap for essentially the same job can be incredible, life changing even. m.koreaherald.com/article/1042...

Good development here in middle schools and high schools in Seoul. Hope there is more support for these students and follow-up on this program. m.koreaherald.com/article/1042...

"Nongshim’s Shin Ramyun Toomba, a bold blend of spice and cream, is set to debut on shelves in Woolworths in Australia and 7-Eleven in Japan" Pretty fascinating article on corporate noodle rivalry but sad to not see mention of Denmark's ban on spicy ramyun! m.koreaherald.com/article/1042...

Syllabus for my #AI & Society class is up but it’s impossible to say it’s “done” I’m proud of the week on #syntheticdata but wish there was more on #agenticAI I’m proud that every week has a woman and PoC author but frustrated by lack of early career scholars All that’s to say— feedback welcome!

The memening continues 😆

Hi Bluesky friends: I wanted to share that my book, THERE IS NO PLACE FOR US, is coming out in March. Based on a half-decade of reporting, it examines the rise of America's "working homeless," following five Atlanta families desperate to secure housing in a gentrifying, increasingly unequal city.

Sometimes the university campus #LinguisticLandscape juxtaposes images in very surprising ways

"It’s been dubbed 'so Canadian' — five of Seth Jarvis’s childhood friends drove 30 hours to cheer on the NHLer, who is from Winnipeg, in Canada’s thrilling overtime victory over the U.S. Thursday." Fun Winnipeg story here. www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews...

if anyone knows of any teaching work in finnish universities please let me know!

"Oh, he isn't real. He's just a composite face, put together by a computer." Kirby was reading rooms that weren't even built yet.
