Theaster Gates, drawing on a Japanese archive of Black radicalism, "engages with the methods of care + preservation nurtured in Japanese philosophy + craftsmanship, drawing upon them as a framework to consider the role of art and aesthetics in shaping political, ideological and cultural legacies."

There’s a terrible feeling when you realize that the affection and “love” you received was conditional on a certain set of behaviors. It’s difficult for the mind to come to terms with this reality: they loved to for what you provided. They’ll keep taking, even when there’s nothing left.

think of your sketchbook as a machine that helps you record and process ideas. a safe, private machine with no rules, no expectations, no judgement, and — most of all — no right or wrong. #art #design

Why is every piece that comes out of the kiln my new favorite piece?? “Monster Triplets,” Porcelain with Celadon and Tenmoku (Ceramics)

Just loaded this big boy to bisque.

The spaces/buildings that Theaster Gates' has created around the south side of Chicago are all within a 3mi radius. While that may feel accessible to folks with cars, it is significant for people relying on public transportation/walking.

Check it out! The cage door opens and closes-this is a fully ceramic built piece. Survived bisque, now on to glazing!

This week I spent some time at the various spaces created by Theaster Gates in the south side of Chicago. I’m struck by the craft invested in these spaces, along with the ability of the space to hold what is needed. This is not the kind of work they teach you in architecture school.

“I will remember that they are, like me, simply ambassadors of a sacred land that few have access to, with knowledges richer and more complex than their works could ever reveal.” This passage brought feelings right to the surface… from “A Clay Sermon,” by Theaster Gates

This morning I’m speaking at Salesforce Ed Summit about my work with Teachers College, Columbia University on our student portal experience!

I’m realizing this page has become a ceramics account!! Sorry to all those who followed because of psychology! My psych coursework this semester, development of creativity, is a case study on ceramics/multidisciplinary artist Theaster Gates.

And here’s a little peek into how it looks now:

Any guesses for what I’m making?

⚠️🚧🔨 Work in progress over here!

Experimenting with form… mask that becomes a bowl:

The urge to go to campus just to see my ceramics out of the kiln… (photo from the studio manager)

Ceramic update!!! 👹

Now up on my site! 📖🧑🏻‍🏫 www.michaelheadrick.com/art/p/vampir...

What a nice surprise! The Zine is printed (correctly)! Available soon on the website!

Crossing (2022) by Wanda Koop. Acrylic on canvas.

Celebrating Eros: this Valentine’s Day I remembered when I was a kid and made little cards for crushed and friends alike. I decided to make some Valentines craft cards for myself… and of course I needed a lil cupid phallus!!! 💘

Working on listening to the inner voice, especially for “small” decisions… how can I honor the self in big and small ways every day?

Ugh… misprint from the printer. Why is the fold at the top 😩… The zine is going to have to wait.

Doing some 3D modeling to 3D print a positive for a two-part plaster mold.

Today I revisit my work “Vampire Jar,” the Zine is set to be delivered this week and I’ll offer them on my website!

I have to admit that I was targeted by an ad for Q-Less… it was $15 so I just got a set, and it’s safe to say I’m enjoying myself. (It’s like scrabble but you roll the letter dice and you have to use all the letters.)

Update: I had to re-make the ears! And I made arms 😌

Enjoying a Sunday lecture today with Chantal Powell-discussing the way that art expresses contents from the unconscious. Here we see Hildegard of Bingen's illustrations.

Went to the Luna Luna show a couple of weeks ago at The Shed in Hudson Yards. What a magical show-incredible production value and storytelling. It straddles exhibit and performance in the best way.

Just submitted an application for a pretty large public commission. Fingers crossed for me 😌

The studio is back open for the season!
