I think there's generally a strong tendency to think that it's the irrational and wrong that needs explaining. If that tendency were operating here, it would suggest a certain presumption behind the thousands of posts.

I think the Pym which most obviously centres on the 'learned society' was actually published the year before this. Maybe he was a type - or did it often!

Wonderful! Do you know when this was? I'm tempted to think Barbara Pym might have been there. It's very like the sort of thing that happens in some of her descriptions of 'learned society' meetings. She worked for the International African Institute for years, and moved among anthropologists.

We already see the shutdown's cost. Kids with drug-resistant TB, turned away from clinics, are not just dying - they're spreading the disease. People around the world w HIV, denied their medicine, will soon start transmitting virus. The damage is global.
