A life's story on a piece of paper from 1707

Volume 1 of Carl Costenoble“s diary - which I'm the only modern scholar to have read completely.

On May 24, 1880, the physician Dr. Wilhelm Taussig (1808-1889) wrote two versions of his will: one in German and one in Hebrew. Taussig, a retired physician of the Vienna General Hospital and doctor of the Jewish Community, was a legendary political figure and a universally popular philanthropist

I love the votive tablets for Saint Anthony in the Franciscan cloister in the Alservorstadt. And some of them are true gems!

An unknown Liszt document.

Was in aller Welt ist eine "Messertrage"? Die richtige Verwendung von Bindestrichen ist schwerer als man glaubt. #oe1

Vienna, March 1845

In 1835, the chancellery of Count Andrey Razumovsky certified that Elias Pasischnikoff, until his death in 1818, had been employed by the Count as a cook. And since he had been a subject of the Count, his three children must be considered "the property of His Serene Highness".

Ein Gewährbuch

Ein Dienstbuch

A breathtaking discovery today in the state archives: the files concerning the dispute following a broken marriage promise by the young Count Franz von Wallsegg.

On November 16, 1853, Julius Cornet, the director of the Käntnertortheater, informed the singer Emmy La Grua that she had to sing Donna Anna the anniversary of #Mozart's death. The performance of a Mozart opera was strictly required on this day.

The famous entry in the protocol of the session of the Kabinettskanzlei on 16 May 1788, containing the statement of Joseph II on "Don Giovanni": "La Musique de Mozard est bien trop difficile pour le chant."

This must have been a very exquisite boardinghouse!

Music from my cellphone.

On 31 May 1820, Wolfgangus Amadeus Mozart the Younger applied for a passport "nach Neapel und ganz Italien um 1 Jahr sich zu produzieren". His landlord, the lutheran preacher Ernst Pauer was Andreas Streicher's son in law.

A beautiful document that proves the quality of 18th-century-education.

The seal of the lawyer Dr. Johann Henry showed an ouroboros around a small letter h. It seems that the h is a part of the snake.

An amazing find from February 2024

Today is the 149th birthday of my grandfather Arthur Lorenz. He was the illegitimate son of a Viennese seamstress and a Serbian nobleman.

Same procedure as every year.

No Austrian composer died a wealthier man than Gottfried von Preyer. His collection of paintings alone was estimated at 353,900 Kronen.

The first page of Brahms's will which - as is well known - is a letter addressed to Fritz Simrock. The foliation was done by the moron Hanns Jäger-Sunstenau with his notorious ballpen.

Johannes Kepler's petition from October 1613 to Emperor Mathias I. to send an emissary to his wedding.

The earliest appearance of Ludwig Köchel, "Erzieher v: Stein" on a conscription sheet of the Vienna Konskriptionsamt. Köchel lived as "Aftermieter" (subtenant) together with three servants. Here we also learn that Köchel was "zu klein" for the military.

The second page of the marriage contract of Haydn's brother-in-law Joseph Thomas Keller. This document was written on 28 January 1790, the wedding took place nine months later. Joseph Keller married his housekeeper Anna Maria Eschenbrucker who was 43 years his junior.

Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv, OMeA, Oper

The page in the manuscript of the sonata op. 24 where #Beethoven wrote the following on the margin: "Nb: Der Copist der die 3 und 6 hier hinein gemacht war ein Esel".

An interesting passage from Ignaz Castelli's memoirs.

The concertmaster of the court orchestra, Thomas Woborzil, bequeathed his best violin by Leidolf to the Vienna Court Chamber. This violin, which was used to lead the orchestra at the premiere of "Figaro", could still be in the collection of the Hofburgkapelle today.

Two pages of the amazing will of the surgeon Dr. Victor Seng (1842-1898) (written on the paper of the "Erste K.K. priv. Donau-Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft)

On 28 July 1812, Mathias Perth's (girl?)friend "A.K." gave him this cut out token of friendship. "Ein Sanfter Druck der Hand knüpft unser Freundschaftsband".

The blossom of an Amorphophallus konjac.

#Mozart's great-great-great-grandfather Leonhard Altmann died in December 1605, in Vienna. His will is the only document that proves his existence. A discovery of breathtaking irrelevance 😉

The seal of the dancer Paolo Rainoldi (1781-1853)

Gemüsebeilage!

On 4 November 1800, Josepha Auernhammer's husband Johann Bessenig took the oath as Wiener Bürger. Johann Bessenig was born on 22 June 1751, in Zistersdorf.
