CHILLING GRASP Acrylic - 8” x 20” Cosmic horror meets the bitter cold of the Antarctic in this chilling preliminary concept for AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS. www.michaelwhelan.com/shop/chillin...

Swiss artist MARCK skillfully melds both sculpture and video installations, using sculpted metal frames to confine his videos of women. "These function as metaphors for the boundaries women face in society." shares Whitenoise Projects. Learn more at marck.tv #beautifulbizarre #art

THE END OF NATURE VII (2005) Acrylic on Panel - 25" x 40" Up until this point in my End of Nature series, I had portrayed the people who represent humanity in general as somewhat oblivious to the support that nature was providing for them. 1/2

TARRANT'S REALM (1990) Acrylic on Watercolor Board - 32" x 20" C.S. Friedman creates fascinating characters. Among the most complex I’ve visualized is the anti-hero Gerald Tarrant. 1/2

I assume DAW would still own the rights, if they wanted to use it for something else. They never have, though, and I can see why. The setting was so peculiar [the disheveled mounted “knight” holding a sword made of wood, for example] that I couldn’t imagine it being useful for some other story. 1/3

Alas, I don’t remember! I wish I could be more definitive about this. It was back in the 80s, so we’re talking a long time ago. All I'm certain of was that DAW hired me to do this cover painting, but after the first draft the author wasn’t able to complete the book for one reason or another. 1/3

In this week's newsletter, the story behind my first egg tempera painting and details on where to see the original painting THE WAY OF KINGS on exhibition in June. theartofmichaelwhelan.substack.com/p/a-tale-of-...

AT THE EDGE (1988) Acrylic on Watercolor Board - 30" x 22" This was a commission for DAW based on an outline, but something happened to the author and he never finished the manuscript, so I guess you could say it’s an orphaned painting, forever waiting for a book. 1/2

SPELLWEAVERS (1995) Acrylic on Watercolor Board - 29" X 21" Communicating a sense of magic on a book cover without the recognizable cliches of wizard hats, wands, or flying carpets can be a difficult task for a modern illustrator. 1/4

BLUE WHALE (1999) Acrylic - 24" x 16" The light she is hauling has a little blue whale on it as a sort of decal. 1/2

BY THE DRAGON’S HAND (2012) Acrylic - 8 ½ x 11” As Rand al'Thor enters Shayol Ghul for the final showdown with The Dark One, he wields Callandor to illuminate the way. www.michaelwhelan.com/shop/by-the-...

PIPEDREAM (2008) Acrylic - 20" x 30" Most days I take a walk in the late afternoon to clear my head and stretch my legs. Sometimes I come across trash thrown in a field or left in a parking lot and I get annoyed thinking about how thoughtless people can be. 1/5

This week we have an alternate figure study of Rand al'Thor from A MEMORY OF LIGHT coming to our shop on Wednesday, April 16 at 11am ET. A preview is now available for our paid supporters on Substack.

I had been doubtful that we were going to have a "this is the crisis moment" with Trump, as opposed to "everything about this is a destructive catastrophe." But the Abrego Garcia case is the crisis moment. 1/
