A Cedar Waxwing, looking very much the masked marauder. #birds #birds_matter

A Yellow-billed Magpie carries construction materials in to the building project. It was fun to watch this pair work on their nest, high in a tree. It may take them up to two months to finish the work. #birds #birds_matter

Lesser Sandhill Cranes in early morning light. In California, two subspecies visit each winter - Lesser and Greater Sandhill Cranes. Overall, there are six subspecies. But we don’t really care about such details. We enjoy them while they’re here and miss them when they leave. #birds #birds_matter

In birdworld, breeding season has arrived. For some bird species that means elaborate courtship rituals and romance. For the Ring-necked Duck the approach is more direct. #birds #birds_matter

Mute Swans in courtship mode. This species is monogamous and this pair has been together for a few years, but the gentleman still pitches woo to win his lady love’s consent. #birds #birds_matter

A Northern Shoveler seems to smile as it zooms by, easily evading a patrolling Northern Harrier. #birds #birds_matter

An American Kestrel polishes off his breakfast. #birds #birds_matter

The American Bittern is well-camouflaged, shy and oh-so-easy to overlook. #birds #birds_matter

A Western Bluebird enjoys a berry. #birds #birds_matter

A Double-crested Cormorant - gotta love that amazing turquoise eye. #birds #birds_matter

Red-shouldered Hawk on a fog shrouded day. #birds #birds_matter

A handsome Common Merganser arrives with flair! #birds #birds_matter

A Burrowing Owl gives me the “go away” look. And so I do. #birds #birds_matter

A Green Heron snags a meal. #birds #birds_matter

Sandhill Cranes make magic dancing in the fog. #birds #birds_matter

An American Bittern and I hold a mental standoff, each hoping the other won’t notice our presence. I was very close, hiding in my car, delighted to make this full frame portrait. I’m sure the Bittern was equally delighted when I moved on. #birds #birds_matter

A Cooper’s Hawk springs into action as it spots a likely lunch. #birds #birds_matter

In just the right morning light, this Red-winged Blackbird’s epaulets almost look ablaze. No wonder he sings so proudly. He’s a sight everyone should see. #birds #birds_matter

A Yellow-billed Magpie takes to wing. #birds #birds_matter

Snow Geese! #birds #birds_matter

Even on rainy days this Anna’s Hummingbird needs to eat every ten or fifteen minutes - and keep up the important work of spreading pollen around. #birds #birds_matter

The Belted Kingfisher is my photographic nemesis. Once in a rare while an individual does permit a portrait, as this lady was so kind to do. Thank you. #birds #birds_matter

A female Northern Harrier gives me a good look, then is elegance in motion as she patrols her territory. #birds #birds_matter

Is there room for one more? In the land of Snow Geese, the answer is always “Yes.” #birds #birds_matter

This Western Meadowlark posed nicely and gave me a chance to be ready for a nice flight shot no matter which direction it flew. Except that it did the acrobatic yoga 180 move, giving me the classic vent view, of which I already have too many. #birds #birds_matter

Tundra Swans - they are monogamous and cygnets stay with the parents for up to two years, so perhaps this is a family - in early morning light. #birds #birds_matter

A Common Goldeneye skims rapidly along the river, flying low to create an air cushion that gives him added maneuverability and life, and beating his wings so rapidly that they create a distinct whistling sound as he flies. #birds #birds_matter

A Herring Gull does itself and the community a favor with some cleanup work - polishing off the carcass of a Northern Shoveler hen that was taken down by a Red-tailed Hawk. The gull watched closely as the hawk dined and was ready to step in the second the hawk flew off. #birds #birds_matter
