'We understand that changes of this nature can be unsettling, and we do not take them lightly', says the bloke who earned a salary of over $1,000,000 last year. #education #university #academia

Excellent coverage of Macquarie Uni’s proposed restructure: www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

If only Linda Reynolds had brought the same dogged determination to other issues during her time in government as she has invested in pursuing Brittany Higgins. I can't recall a single public interest issue she championed.

This is a great, nuanced piece about Haidt’s ‘Anxious Generation’ - it’s far better than most commentary on the book: observer.co.uk/culture/book...

I just don't think Government or the public realise the consequences of purging decades of experience, expertise, and knowledge from Universities will do, both on a research and economic level, but also on the quality of education we can provide future generations. We're shrinking into oblivion.

Whenever people ask me what I mean when I talk about the “neoliberal university”, I tell them about the giant Woodside Building on campus www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

RIP Brian Wilson - undoubtedly one of the greatest song writers of the 20th century. www.theguardian.com/music/2025/j...

This is the stupidest policy ever. Aside from the grotesque inequity of it, it'd just encourage every taxpayer to send their kids private to minimise or eliminate their taxes. Imagine being able to send your kids to a $20- $50,000 school and having the fees deducted from your tax bill. Insane.

Shambolic. If teachers can use AI to mark, why can’t students use AI to write? And here we go: students not doing the work and teachers not doing the marking. Why don’t students not bother to go to school and teachers can stay at home? How about we all don’t get out of bed in the morning?????

After the May federal election, Australia’s federal parliament has almost reached gender parity. By my calculations the House of Representatives in the 48th Parliament will be 46% women and the Senate 56.6% women. The Parliament as a whole will be 49.6% women. /1

Macquarie University is planning to make 50-60 academic staff redundant across Arts + Science & Engineering in coming months. Justification? It can't be money. The University just reported a tiny deficit (literally a rounding error) and strong cash flows See here: www.mq.edu.au/about/about-...

On the one hand, an industry that makes billions of dollars, provides thousands of good jobs, and produces immense cultural capital. On the other hand, an industry with a barely-functional product that has yet to turn a profit. Only someone bought and paid for would see this as a tough call.

What is the role of historians in genocidal times? 'To respond to the call that is being screamed from Gaza and from Palestine for just action and truth-telling'. From Zora Simic, Jordy Silverstein and Ben Silverstein www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Apparently sending ChatGPT to hell for ruining the potential of my student's essays and hindering their learning is not an option. #academicsky #highered #undergrads

It has been over 9 weeks of siege on #Gaza, with the State of Israel banning the entry of all humanitarian aid, medical, and commercial supplies. UNRWA has thousands of trucks ready to enter and our teams in Gaza are ready to scale up the delivery. The siege must be lifted.

This is too much. The NSW police are, effectively, sexually assaulting people. Maybe a class action WILL make them think twice about their actions?

This. Labor needs to be bolder, do better in their next term. They were lucky to be up against a dreadful opposition but they need to step up: in higher education, in climate action, on transparency, and fixing our below poverty-level ‘safety’ net. Let’s hold their feet to the fire and demand better

To think the Coalition torpedoed the Voice for this

Jacinta Price showing the absolute joke that she is right now on ABC coverage. Get in the Bin. #auspol #binNight

Sad to see Dan Tehan retain his seat: he was the architect of Job Ready Graduates, one of the most destructive, punitive higher education policies we’ve ever seen. Labor needs to get rid of it as soon as possible

“Donald Trump doesn’t own those four words.” Jacinta Price doing standup on ABC

whan antony green says you've lost before 8:30 without working computers

PS, this is for the next day or two, when all the conservatives start melting down on Sky News

"Fuck me. Really?"

For me Antony Green announcing Dutton is set to lose his seat will be the image of the night.

Looks as though the politics of grievance is not our thing. Something to be glad of.

For those watching Antony Green's last election broadcast tonight, I made us a Bingo Sheet. #AUSPOL

Are we going to have a brief chat about why public schools have a need to fundraise by selling democracy sausages? 🤔 #auspol

Went to three different schools to support local fundraising efforts during the vote and I have to say Australia - you so often prove that collectively, you’re better than the political debate allegedly in your name

How about we start celebrating higher education as a nation? How about we start shouting, loudly, of the social good of higher education? How about we talk of the nurses, the doctors, the teachers, the social workers, educated at universities? How about we celebrate the artists, the writers, 1/

A vote for The Thug is also a vote for the most witless, vacuous, incompetent front bench in living memory: Angus Taylor, Sussssan Ley, Barnaby Joyce, Jane Hume, Michaelia Cash, James Paterson…what an appalling thought.
