A few weeks ago, when Ken Sim passed his crypto motion, he - very weirdly - pledged a "donation" of $10,000 in Bitcoin to the city. It has already lost $2,500 of its value. Thank goodness (for now) he only has his own money to gamble on crypto, and not the city's. We should keep it that way.

See all the street furniture, the extended patios? You can't have any of this placemaking if you make the street car free only 1 day a week for 8 hours. No business is going to install and dismantle these things on repeat. This was a Thursday btw

Time to pull the US liquor back off the shelves... and this time keep it off for the next 4 years. www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

This is the ABC by-election candidate Ralph Kaisers. In 2023, a police officer hit and injured a pedestrian with his car. Based on the evidence, an independent investigation recommended charges for dangerous driving. Kaiser's response? "The only charge should have been for the pedestrian." (1/2)

Wow look barely a week of TaskForceBarrage and it's already working! πŸ™„ This would be silly if it wasn't so alarming. The VPD is coordinating with Sim to influence another election.

At the risk of aging myself, about 25 years ago I got my first ever job: delivering The Record. I remember at the time New West had another local paper, The Newsleader. In my mind it was a big important rivalry and I was proud to be a "Record" guy. Anyway, I guess it's all history now.

Ok patriotism is generally dumb and hockey is just a silly game but good lord did we need that πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

Me for the past 2 years "I can't imagine a worse city councilor than Brian Montague" ABC "hold my beer" vancouversun.com/news/abc-van...

10 people were killed on the NYC subway system last year. That's awful, that's 10 too many. But 247 people were killed in car crashes - even though more people take the subway than drive. There's no scenario where driving to work is safer than taking the train.

I really wish Americans would stop treating the continued existence of Canada as the sort of thing they can do amusing thought experiments about.

The mayor's new police funding was only announced this week and already the VPD are using the tacky #taskforcebarrage tag on socials. Get ready for every crime prevented between now and the by-election to coincidentally be because of #taskforfebarrage, as ABC and the VPD continue their coordination.

Clr @rebeccaleebligh.bsky.social helped found ABC. She's consistently been their best councilor. This statement is pretty jarring - not even a thank you for her years of service. She disagreed with the mayor a couple times and that's it, out the door, screw you. Sim's "leadership" on full display.

... he says, as he announces a plan to pour more money into the only system he's ever tried (more cops), which isn't delivering results.

In 2021 large sections along a 130km stretch of the Coquihalla washed into the river; it was fully re-opened in a year. But when a couple hundred metres of probably the most popular pedestrian & cyclist path in the province is damaged? Oops sorry maybe we'll fix it in 7 years! πŸ™ƒ

No matter what's happening, it's always a good time to support local! ❀️

People might think the upcoming Vancouver by-election doesn't matter, because ABC will still control a minimum of 8/11 votes. I disagree! Do you like the things on this list? They're motions that @christineboyle.bsky.social brought to council during this term alone.

Cool, now cities on the island are also saying they won't build more social housing till other cities build more. Sim has started a race to the bottom across the entire province. cheknews.ca/island-mayor...

Canucks are approaching 55 years without a Cup. I mean, all I'm saying is this is worth a try.

The fact that social housing and support is concerned in the DTES is a choice, not an inevitability. If Sim thinks this concentration is a bad thing, he should allow supportive housing in other neighbourhoods across the city. But of course, he has no interest in any of that.

I see the by-election campaign has officially started

What if I told you there's a way to cut traffic, clean our air, reduce injuries & deaths on our roads, make commutes more reliable for folks who do need to drive, can be implemented in a couple months, and it costs nothing? (Actually makes millions that we can pour into transit.)

I maintain that what makes carbon tax attacks so effective is that we have giant glowing signs everywhere telling everyone the real time price of gas. If these signs showed the price of grapefruits the conservatives would be up in arms about Trudeau's failed citrus policies.

If you care about Canada's sovereignty there are small things you can do. Keep your money north of the border! Book a trip to Banff instead of Yellowstone. Look for "grown in Canada" stickers on produce. Check the local store for that thing you need before jumping on amazon.

Cable management is my passion

This is great for NYC! Meanwhile in Vancouver we're not even allowed to *study* the idea, and a huge fight in our last election was about which of our top 2 mayoral candidates hated congestion pricing more

Like clockwork, every time there's an act of terrorism using a vehicle, conservatives online will make the same sarcastic "ban assault vehicles!" joke. But unironically, I say yes? There's a reason these people choose massive trucks to commit these atrocities.

Something I'm thinking a lot about in 2025 is the need to become much more vigilant in the pursuit of truth. Between the richest man on earth trying to destroy all forms of media he doesn't control, and the ability of AI to generate increasingly convincing nonsense, we're not going to have it easy.

My 2024 books in review. Pretty good year!

Virtually all these towers in New West were built in the past 15 years, but contrary to the fears many have regarding new development, they haven't ushered in a traffic nightmare. In fact the streets almost feel quieter than when I was growing up here. I think for 2 main reasons...

Hmm I haven't opened twitter in a few weeks I wonder what's going on over ther--- oh good lord 🀣

Interesting case of marketing vs reality. The ads for this development on Oak & 64th show a quiet, 2-lane street with nice crosswalks. The reality is this 6-lane gridlocked uncrossable monstrosity. It's almost like living on major arterials is unpleasant and we have to trick people into it.

There aren't enough garbage cans in my neighbourhood where one can throw away dog poop on a walk πŸ’© but looks like the city was kind enough to add a new dumpster on my street. It's a little unconventional but I'll still use it!

A year into his term, Ken Sim was touting the Stanley Park train as one of his main accomplishments. Turns out it returned without an accessible carriage, with an exhaust problem so bad it sent a worker to hospital, and is now broken for the year. Swagger!! vancouver.citynews.ca/2024/12/20/s...

Holborn let this heritage building fall into such disrepair that it needs to be emergency demolished. If the name sounds familiar, it's because this is the same developer that got a sweetheart deal from council get out of building social housing at Little Mountain. globalnews.ca/news/1006429...

Moved to a new apartment with a great view of SenΜ“Γ‘αΈ΅w going up. Awesome to see the progress!

My building's entire (extremely over-crowded) bike room takes up 3 parking spots. This one vehicle for one unit takes up 2.

Ken Sim claims Bitcoin is "great for the environment" because, hypothetically, one *could* use clean energy to provide a bit of the massive amount of energy needed for mining. I feel like even a 5th grader can see the flaw in that logic but, concerningly, he seems to actually believe it.
