I'm torn between an Apple Watch and a Garmin as my daily driver. I seem to switch between the two every year, for some reason. I'm leaning towards the Apple Watch for 2025. Will my watch selection impact how much time I spend outdoors?

I've really enjoyed the Rivian's adaptive high beams, but found it difficult to explain without seeing it firsthand. This Reddit post is a great example of how the high beams work, using fog to clearly show what they're doing. Such an awesome feature!

Verizon now offers a second line for $10 a month. For an eSIM on a major carrier, this is the lowest rate I've found. Perfect for keeping your personal and work numbers separate without needing a second phone!

While repairing the damaged drywall after removing a mounted soundbar, I'm reminded of an important life lesson: Making a hole sure is easy, but fixing them can be a real pain

I still can't figure out how to use the *new* Sonos app

A month into running the UNAS Pro, and I'm darn happy. The price is right for a 7-bay 2U NAS, and paired with an Intel NUC or similar, it runs laps around equivalent Synology setups. It leaves a bit to be desired on the feature side, but performance and reliability have been great so far.

Setup a Bluesky PDS running on a Proxmox LXC in my basement. Compared to my experience standing up a personal Mastodon instance, it was incredibly easy, uses barely any resources, and doesn’t fragment the experience at all. Pretty darn cool! The account is @mike.test.lapidak.is

The greatest surprise drop of the shopping season has to be Home Depot now accepting Apple Pay

Nothing quite like decorating a Christmas tree with a toddler to prepare you for the chaos of the holiday season

Planning my six-year-old's first trip to NYC in a couple of weeks and just found out it's the same weekend as SantaCon… what are we in for?

I would love to understand why the Rivian de-rates while charging so early and so aggressively. It's 30 degrees out, so I can't imagine it's the ambient temp causing it. It has to be the most frustrating part of road trips with this vehicle.

Loved this workbench in the greenhouse at a family friend's house. The lighting, colors, and utility stood out; you can't fake this aesthetic.

Loving that Sony added cloud streaming to the PlayStation Portal, but it really shines a light on how lacking the library is. Happy to play Last of Us Part I while away from home, though. I’m surprised how well it works on a 20 Mb/s connection in a remote area of Arkansas, too

Exploring Blanchard Springs Caverns

A quiet morning in the Ozarks

The first half of our annual 1800-mile Thanksgiving road trip is in the books, this time with the Rivian R1S. I'm sharing the play-by-play and some stats for the nerds.

The Rivian did great in the backcountry. I pushed the max battery pack to the limit, with the closest charger about 100 miles away from camp and over three days off the grid. Definitely a confidence boost for future off-road adventures

Typefully now supports Bluesky 🦋 Yes, this post was written and published from Typefully! Yes, we support videos too. Yes, you can do it too! As a matter of fact, with Typefully, you can now master 5 different platforms: X, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, and Mastodon. Let's go! 🔥

It is so incredibly nice to have a social platform that values links again - a breath of fresh air in the poisoned ecosystem of the creator economy

Is it crazy to trade in an M1 iPad Pro for one of the new minis? The size of the mini is fantastic for reading, but not great for much else.

Is there a better site for #photographers than Glass? Their recently launched Series feature takes albums to the next level, the default gallery view surfaces detailed EXIF info, and the tagging feature is actually useful. A quality product, with a growing community.

A chilly weekend in the mountains

USPS Informed Delivery used to be an incredibly cool and valuable way to see what mail was arriving each day. Now it's just one more way for junk mail to get through, and is borderline spam. Such a bummer.

Photos shot in HEIF format on my Fujifilm camera take forever to fully render on both my MacBook Pro and iPhone. When I first open a photo, it can take up to 30 seconds to load the full-quality version; until then, the image looks blurry and out of focus. Are others experiencing this?

Lots to love about the X100VI, but why did they put this flimsy focus mode selection switch on the side of the camera, where your hand can easily accidentally change it? I've missed more photos than I can count by inadvertently switching it to manual mode without realizing.

Y'all - who did the music in Silent Hill 2 and have they got the help they need?

Cross-posting with Croissant is refreshingly simple Deciding which network to post on has slowed how much I share. Croissant's simple UI, saved drafts, and integration with Mastodon, Threads and Bluesky easily makes it the first place I go to share now. Worth a look on iOS. https://croissantapp.com
