100+ people gathered in #Victoria on Tuesday following Israel’s resumption of massive airstrikes that killed over 400 people and injured more than 560 others. Entire families were wiped out, according to survivors. Netanyahu said the renewed strikes on #Gaza are “only the beginning.” #Palestine

Today my heart is with Cambria and Elle Harris, who after nearly three tireless years have located the body of their mother, Morgan Harris, found in Prairie Green Landfill in Winnipeg. Morgan Harris and three other Indigenous women were murdered by convicted serial killer Jeremy Skibicki in 2022.

Crackdowns on unhoused residents sheltering in #Victoria continued this week as #VicPD and bylaw officers dismantled tent encampments in Oakland’s Park, stripping people of their possessions and survival gear.

Today, #VicPD and bylaw officers continued evicting unhoused residents in Oaklands Park, seizing their possessions/survival gear. When I arrived, I witnessed police standing guard as bylaw officers threw an unhoused woman’s tent, sleeping bag & other survival gear into garbage bins. #stopthesweeps

Hundreds marched through Lekwungen homelands over the long weekend for the 15th annual #StolenSisters Memorial March, honouring the thousands of #Indigenous women, girls & 2SLGBTQQIA+ people who have been murdered or remain missing in Canada. The crisis is a “race-based genocide” -National Inquiry

Trump declaring his plan to “take over” and “own” #Gaza under the justification of it being full of “death and destruction,” while sitting cordially beside the culprit war criminal whose U.S.-backed military destroyed Gaza is as disgusting as it is unsurprising. The Onion headline writes itself.

More seriously though, it’s striking how quickly those in power admit we can interfere with markets and divert supply chains at the stroke of a pen after they’ve spent years insisting they’re powerless to do so in order to pull people out of poverty, fight climate change or protect ecosystems.

As Israel submits to Phase 1 of a ceasefire in Gaza, community members in Victoria marched through the streets for the 67th week, continuing to call on Canada to ends its complicity in Israel’s genocide and war crimes. #yyj #freepalestine

Community members came together in Victoria on Saturday to honour the life and legacy of Shea Smith, an outspoken housing justice advocate who was killed at the cross-sections of the drug poisoning crisis and bylaw policies that criminalize homelessness. #yyj #stopthesweeps

Following the deaths of 13 unhoused community members over the past 3 weeks, @backpackproject.bsky.social founder Niki Ottosen sharply criticized City of Victoria Mayor & Council this week as they deliberated on allocating another $4.7 million to enforce the city’s daytime sheltering ban.

Unhoused community members set up an encampment at Centennial Square in #yyj #bc last night following a rally where they spoke about the systemic neglect & punitive policies targeting the unhoused. The encampment of around eight tents and a dozen people lasted until this morning when police arrived.

Global National picked up photos I took for @indiginews.bsky.social of Gitxsan youth’s recent action in Victoria during the #BC NDP’s swearing-in ceremony. See Neetu Garcha’s full reporting on the Gitanyow/Gitxsan resistance to the #PRGT pipeline here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-30V...

It’s #ReadPalestine Week! 🇵🇸📚

Gitxsan and Gitanyow Land defenders continue to organize against PRGT as its environmental certificate is up for review. It's time for the BC NDP to do the right thing and let this certificate expire. Story by @mikegraeme.bsky.social via @indiginews.bsky.social indiginews.com/features/win...

“It’s scary thinking I’m going to be out here in the winter, but it really feels like I can’t leave," says Maas Gwitkunuxws Teresa Brown, who's been camping near the projected PRGT pipeline route. “I do this from love.” Story by @mikegraeme.bsky.social indiginews.com/features/win...

It was a great honour to interview 94-year-old Haida basket weaver Delores Churchill for @indiginews.bsky.social. So happy that her work will be recognized through her book, published this fall, after 35 years in the making. #Indigenous #weaving

“It’s scary thinking I’m going to be out here in the winter, but it really feels like I can’t leave," says Maas Gwitkunuxws Teresa Brown, who's been camping near the projected #PRGT pipeline route. “I do this from love.” Latest feature for @indiginews.bsky.social indiginews.com/features/win...

Because the below skeet went viral here, and people are arguing over it, I'm going to share some more info about it from a thread I did at the other place. I really need to just do an article about it but haven't done that yet. Until then, I hope readers find this thread useful. 🧵

Today, housing justice rallies were held in around 20 cities across Canada, marking what organizers are calling “the first ever national day of action for housing justice.” #housingjustice #canada

Today, activists held an “Anti-Pipeline Breakfast” and theatrical parody outside the #BC Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) in Victoria, expressing opposition to the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission #PRGT pipeline that poses threats to Gitxsan and Gitanyow homelands and ways of life.

#BC at a crossroads. “What if we invested in the vision of these Indigenous youth at the scale we are propping up these declining, extractive industries?” Great Op-Ed by @janellelapointe.bsky.social for @thenarwhal.ca Glad to contribute photography. #Politics thenarwhal.ca/energy-econo...

Finally read @mikegraeme.bsky.social 's feature in Indignews on his reflections of his great-great-uncle's role in shaping the Alaskan/Canada border and the effects on the Tlingit people. Fantastic reporting indiginews.com/features/not...

This week, Vancouver Island health workers set up volunteer Overdose Prevention Sites at Royal Jubilee Hospital in #yyj and Regional General Hospital in #ycd. Security removed them from the grounds. “We’re trying to save lives. This is a badly needed service” - Ryan Herriot, family doctor.

I was surprised to see CBC air this footage I helped document during Saturday’s nationally-coordinated “F-35 Day of Action” for a two-way arms embargo on Israel, as the outlet has avoided airing any mention of genocide in the context of Israel’s siege.

Check out @thenarwhal.ca’s recent story: “PRGT pipeline decision looms large for B.C.’s new environment minister” by Shannon Waters. I was glad to contribute a photo of the Gitxsan-led action during the NDP’s swearing-in ceremony at Government House. thenarwhal.ca/new-bc-cabin...

B.C.’s newly minted cabinet ministers have tough energy and environmental decisions to make, from the PRGT pipeline and LNG projects to Fairy Creek old-growth logging deferrals VIA @sobittersosweet thenarwhal.ca/new-bc-cabin...

Yesterday, CBC aired this story with my footage from the F-35 Day of Action for an arms embargo on Israel. For years, CBC has systematically reported with a pro-Israel bias—see work of @brishti.bsky.social, Emma Paling, @pacinthe.bsky.social among others. Palestinian voices continue to be silenced.

Gitxsan land defenders and supporters disrupted the NDP swearing-in ceremony at Government House today, telling the B.C. Cabinet Ministers gathered there that they do not consent to the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) pipeline being pushed through their homelands.
