Public service is noble and selfless. People who win Nobel Peace Prizes are noble and seek peace because peace is good and just, not for acclaim and awards.

Trying to understand the DoJ defence for federalising the National Guard. If the courts rule presidential assertions are not justiciable, can a president federalise the National Guard to fend off a unicorn invasion? youtube.com/shorts/jItAh...

this post reminded me, masked vigilantes were such a scourge that Congress made it a felony to "go in disguise upon the public highway" for the purpose of interfering with the free exercise of constitutional rights in the Enforcement Act of 1870

Shouldn’t the NY Times headline note that this new policy breaks the law?

Informing a platform about violations to its terms of service isn't censorship. Threatening universities and student visas because you don't like what they say is censorship. Calling posts like this out for what they are, disinformation, serves democracy. America needs to regain its moral clarity.

The consequences of JCPOA withdrawal in graph form www.ft.com/content/193f...

There is a reasonable question to ask, what is the US plan for success. What does pressuring Ukraine to refrain from attacking Russian oil achieve?

Teen cousins on their way to a family birthday in Las Vegas were detained near an ICE protest—targeted for simply “looking illegal.” “We're minors just trying to go home,” one told an officer. “Doesn't matter, you guys are illegal,” he replied. They left with bloody legs, bruised arms, faces.

If Netanyahu is serious about regime change, these opening moves are nothing compared to what is coming.

This is a total disaster for US nonproliferation policy that, by withdrawing from the JCPOA in 2018, Trump owns completely.

The U.S. secretary of state wishes the people of fascist imperialist Russia a "brighter future" - a very Soviet turn of phrase. The same people who are signing up in their thousands every month to come to Ukraine to kill. America has fallen very low.

<Thread> I figure I need to explain how extreme and irresponsible is the June 7 Memorandum federalizing the National Guard and authorizing regular armed forces. Those saying anything in support of this action may not realize what they’ve gotten into. (It will also escalate from here.) Preview⤵️

In case you're wondering, authoritarians use this strategy of escalation to manufacture crisis, provoke outrage, then use the reaction to justify repression. It’s not about restoring order, it's about creating a spectacle of chaos they can claim only they can control.

@raskin.house.gov: "JD Vance says Trump won’t “tolerate rioting and violence.” Really, since when? He incited riots and violence on Jan. 6, 2021 and watched as MAGA attacked our police, rejecting all calls for the National Guard. We don’t need MAGA violence—for insurrection or repression."

It is the role of journalists to cover protests and how authorities handle them. It is also the responsibility of authorities to protect journalists to do their job. #pressfreedom

Tear gas inhalation is extremely painful. It is described as feeling like fire going through your nose, sinuses, eyes, and lungs. A person feels like they can't breathe as it creates the sensation of choking. That's why, in 1925, the Geneva Convention made it illegal to use it as a weapon of war.

My take on Trump's false equivalency between Ukraine and Russia in that war. They are not just 'kids' fighting. & Russia started this war, not Ukraine: 'It's just wrong!': Trump blasted for blaming Ukraine after Putin hits civilian targets www.msnbc.com/the-last-wor...

🔴 Zelenskyy: "We are not kids with Putin at a playground. He is a murderer who came to this park to kill the kids."

Deporting people for being criminals and then, for the first time, criminally charging them because time is apparently not linear.

Where different BDA assessments seem to converge. Destroyed: 7 Tu-95MS, 4 Tu-22M3, 1 An-12. Damaged: 1 Tu-95MS, 2 Tu-22M3 , 2 A-50s (probably non-operational). Additionally attacked & possibly damaged: 4 Tu-22M3 (status unclear), and 1 Tu-95MS.

Wow. What a sign that criminal case against Abrego Garcia may be politically cooked up. "Schrader’s resignation was prompted by concerns that the case was being pursued for political reasons" Schrader spent 15 years in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Nashville and was chief of the criminal division

Any law criminalizing teaching that the world is divided into the oppressed and oppressors that would violate the First Amendment. Christian social teaching is all about care for the poor and those oppressed in society. Pro-tip, if you're going to claim something is illegal, cite the law.

It is hard to assess the actions of our current leaders in the security domain. But the contrast between the last administration and the current administration in signalling American capability and credibility to deter Russia is stark.

"If I think I'm close to getting a deal, I don't want to screw it up by doing that," he said on May 28, but added he is prepared to act if Moscow stalls further."" After his earlier phone call with Putin, Trump indicated that peace was a long way off. It must be TACO Tuesday Somewhere

DELETED: Trump administration deleted a webpage summarizing evidence that “undocumented immigrants are arrested at less than half the rate of native-born U.S. citizens for violent and drug crimes and a quarter the rate of native-born citizens for property crimes.” 1/2

Since the 1940s, the engine driving U.S. economic and military competitiveness has been federal support of research universities. Now Trump is sabotaging a research and development pipeline that is the envy of the world. wapo.st/3FDsQEg

Ukraine's attack against Russian bombers has both a high ROI in strategic and economic terms and it will take Russia a long time to replace those bombers. They will also have to invest more in hardened hangers. These are long term consequences. by @edwardlucas.bsky.social cepa.org/article/hous...

A poignant, parting plea from the great Joseph S. Nye Jr. in @foreignaffairs.com: "In his erratic and misguided effort to make the United States even more powerful, Trump may bring its period of dominance [...] to an unceremonious end." www.foreignaffairs.com/united-state...

Trump told Zelenskyy he had no cards, Putin is the one who has been bluffing the whole time: Ukraine just damaged or destroyed 34% of Russia's strategic bombers, blowing through red lines Russia hadn't even imagined -- and leaving the world a safer place. kyivindependent.com/34-of-russia...

Will Trump back up the tough talk with strong action responding to Russia's continued aggression or will he back away, fueling claims that he always chickens out. The politics on this aren't hard, Democrats support it and the GOP will if he does -- supporting Ukraine would be an easy win.
