“Personal liberties” and “free markets”

After years of steady decline the share of US population who are Christians is stabilizing and perhaps a slight bounce back. One wonders what “Christian” means now, however.

This is so disgusting. Shame on every enabler.

If this goes into effect, it will crush higher ed in the U.S.: mass layoffs, slashed services, and even higher tuitions. When coupled with the government firings, it will cause a sharp recession just as the Republicans slash nutritional and medical support for the poor. And that’s the point.

This vote was to start the process of the cuts. It WILL come back for a final vote. There are some chances to slow or potentially stop it. Need constant pressure on GOP Focus on GOP swing seats & key committees. Energy & Commerce is where the Medicaid fight will go down. Ways&Means for tax fight.

Our new paper in PNAS Nexus. County morals > politics for carbon footprints? 🤯 We find that county-level values predict actual green behavior (emissions!), not just attitudes. Stronger than political leaning.

So utterly shameful.

Good shit. Open Access. Read this 👇 doi.org/10.1017/rep....

New study out in @sfjournal.bsky.social. We find Christian nationalism is among the leading predictors of multiple measures of racial solidarity, but ONLY FOR WHITES. For Blacks, CN actually seems to make them LESS inclined to advocate for themselves in politics. 1/3 academic.oup.com/sf/advance-a...

In the wake of uncertain PhD admissions, rescinded offers, increasing rejections, I'm wondering if prospective PhD students would like a forum to come together and discuss next steps. I've hosted "next steps" programming in the past and would be happy to put something together. Let me know!

The entire business model of American R1 universities is not viable without restoration of federal funding, & every individual institution pretending it can solve this problem alone is also not viable. University presidents need to be speaking out, collectively & loudly about this, in DC, right now.

An important finding from our recent study in Psych Science. Our main finding was that telling white Christians about anti-Christian bias made them perceive more anti-white bias. But we also found the same effect for political rhetoric about “religious freedom.” journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....

American science is under attack. This includes everything from cuts to censorship. This will likely have damaging consequences for fields ranging from medical science to agricultral from national defense to economics. See this letter from the Director of the NIH: www.nytimes.com/2025/02/14/o...

Tyranny requires your fear, your silence, and your compliance. Democracy requires your courage.

Kamala was right. And it only took him less than 30 days to roll over for Putin.

The root that tears apart your foundation begins as a seed of distrust, hate, and blame. The seed that grew into a dictatorship in Europe didn’t arrive overnight. It started with everyday Germans mad about inflation and looking for someone to blame.

Dark Pence is back.

After more than 10 years of Andrés Manuel López Obrador setting the agenda, the opposition party in Mexico just couldn’t punch through, @leonkrauze.bsky.social writes. For Democrats, there are two fundamental lessons here:

A moral stain on all of us

Christian nationalism is no longer just shaping school curriculums — it is influencing federal priorities. A coalition of Christian faith leaders is pushing back against the movement, arguing that Christian nationalism doesn’t just corrupt democracy — it corrupts Christianity itself.

Proud of my brother @jmping.bsky.social for organizing this.

OMG. I thought it was bad enough that Trump inaccurately said Ukraine started the war. But now he's calling Zelensky a dictator?!

Heading to SPSP? The secret is that conferences aren't about the talks; they're about connecting with people. And you might enjoy it more than you think (just ditch the grad school crew and work in pairs instead). My guide to academic networking: open.substack.com/pub/michaeli...

SCOOP: Trump administration has been evaluating the costs of destroying or disposing of tens of millions of coronavirus tests that would otherwise be provided free to Americans. My story w/ Carolyn Y. Johnson. www.washingtonpost.com/health/2025/...

As Christian nationalism gains political traction, a growing number of faith leaders who believe the movement undermines both democracy and Christianity — including Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, and even conservative evangelicals — are pushing back from inside the church.

The Trump official currently dismantling USAID was caught in a secret meeting with a group of pro-Russian separatists in the Balkans. Those he met with are under American sanctions for trying to restart the Bosnian war in the name of Christian nationalism. 1/

Termination notices going out this afternoon to more than 300 employees of the National Cancer Institute. Access likely ends today. Four weeks paid leave and that’s it. Strong power move for Team Cancer.

Someone should frame the NIH cuts in terms of the college football schools it would affect. 100% serious.

One of the big legislative fights to watch this year. As a state, Ohio's higher ed workers are more organized than most.

JD Vance has expressed a “deep hostility to the entire academic enterprise, not just the so-called woke parts,” writes @michellegoldberg.bsky.social. "He wasn’t talking about making more room for right-wing ideas in universities or even dreaming of taking them over. He wanted to destroy it all."

The silence of our colleagues who work at NIH is deafening. I hope y’all have noticed that they haven’t chimed in for awhile (at least not in any substantial way). Not because they don’t care about what’s happening, no doubt. It’s because they don’t feel they can. Yikes!

Adams must be removed. The city cannot sustain being governed for nearly a year by a Mayor who is being coerced by Trump admin in order to escape charges. This corruption poses a real threat to the people of the city. He should have resigned a while ago, but will not. So it’s time for him to go.

🚨 The ANES is on the list, because the award description includes the study of 'racial conflict.' The loss of the ANES would be a huge loss for public opinion, and for science.

The numbers are in, and infant mortality rates indeed increased after Roe v. Wade was overturned. For example, infant mortality increased by 9.3 percent in the state of Texas alone. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

Happy to report that APA wrote this letter, gathered a coalition across science, and will now pay for ads for it to be disseminated in Science and Chronicle of Higher Ed to spread the word!! unitedsciencealliance.org

I didn’t change my name when I got married for some very practical reasons but I never thought “so I can keep voting” would be among them

I encourage everyone to go through to see the grants that have been categorized as "woke DEI." It's disgusting. www.commerce.senate.gov/2025/2/cruz-...

BREAKING: House Republicans have released their budget resolution. They are aiming to cut Medicaid by at least $880 billion, and cut SNAP by at least 20%.
