What about the research talent we already had but are losing due to the thousands of job losses in UK universities?

who called it woke pope and not Opus DEI

you know who else came from chicago and was on "a mission from god"

nice

He also gave us televised snooker but once again people sadly just focus on a single small part of his career.

Applications reopen today. Remember you can apply either from within Europe or from outside Europe. We've hosted both more junior and more senior researchers through the scheme & welcome inquiries from either. A friendly, diverse and intellectually engaged History Department in the heart of London.

Co-written with @poppywilde.bsky.social, our article is out now in @icsjournal.bsky.social. We analyse humorous bad taste Twitter reactions to the death of Prince Philip as a critique of the monarchy, and reflect on the ethics of researching controversial content on social media tinyurl.com/y62326fr

"whataboutism" is when someone deflects from an important question without answering it. It's not when someone tells a Harpers Free Speech type "Trump's gestapo are snatching students for thought crime in the campus paper - your assessment of who the authoritarians are was *never* correct"

A Bloody Marie?

Milestone for this book. Thanks to all who have engaged. Timely reminder that there is a *new* edition, extensively revised.

The stupidest thing is, most staff would agree with you on executive pay. That management in the sector is bad. We’ve been on strikes on and off partly because of this. But, and I cannot stress this enough, THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD THEN HAVE SOME SORT OF POLICY ON REFORMING GOVERNANCE IN THE SECTOR.

True even of areas that *could* be technocratically managed. For instance, if you want to reduce the sickness or disability benefit bill, you could fix the job market, accessibility, and the health service; or, you could get "tough on layabouts"... bsky.app/profile/samw...

What Labour fail/refuse to understand of course is that anti-immigration politics can't be addressed at the level of technocratic policymaking. Those most animated by this don't know the exact numbers and won't know or care if the line is "going down". It is a misplaced libidinal desire for cruelty.

165. Labour's working majority, or the number of rakes they are determined to step on?

sneezed and pulled a muscle in my left tit ow

Today 80 years ago, Denmark was liberated from the Nazi regime. It is a long time ago. But the signs are still here. E.g, this bullet hole in a fence at Aarhus University from bombings that happened on Oct 31 in 1944. Those signs serve as a reminder in a time where autocracy is again rising.

Like other figures who've passed from history into myth, Thatcher has become an empty symbol for the Right, detached from her actual politics & beliefs. For a "Thatcher Centre" to cheer on a president who opposes free trade, hates NATO & admires Russian expansionism is almost comically ahistorical.

AI art really is the aesthetic of new fascism

Ironically, this is Big Pharma's wet dream. Rather than a preventative vaccine that costs a few dollars a dose twice a lifetime, they can sell expensive new in-patent drugs for hundreds a dose that you need to keep taking.

For the actual Love. Of. God. talk about something else. How stupid do you have to be? You will never out fash the fash, and why would you even want to?? Make progressive changes in people's daily lives. Plan for a better future. It's that simple.

If Labour MPs don’t get rid of him, they’ll be destroyed come 2029.

The right NOT to vote (or even give a single shit about politics) is freedom of speech, and enforced voting or fines for not voting are morally wrong.

All you need to know about this HHS anti-trans slop pretending to be a scientific review is that they accidentally cited a 404 page.

Cf my earlier posts - all the responses to this saying “it’s the media’s fault for not reporting properly!” or “voters are stupid & racist! We’re helpless!” Again: persuasion is literally a politician’s job. If they believe this stuff they should say it & explain why. Thing is, they don’t believe it

Barnard Castle, eh... Reminds me that I dropped a reference to that in the Sick Note book, and now I wonder: a) will this make any sense to anyone by the end of this decade; and b) whether this passage will continue to be rather ironic in what it suggests a social democratic party COULD offer...

I know very specific people in South Holland that deserve everything they get, but this is just like the "lol fuck red states" stuff. There's a lot of people there that a) didn't vote for this and b) cannot be held responsible for the rest of their county.

Labour will push to win the votes of those who hate them and will never vote for them, while those that might switch back are maybe gone for good because they keep pushing right.

This is notable. There are far fewer... what's the word... "seams" in the Old Skies audio compared to other adventures (especially older ones).

you don't need chatGPT i am perfectly capable of drinking a bottle of water and lying to you

A little annoyed I used "noughties" unironically here, but - crucially - "nought" means "zero", whereas "aught" means "everything", so suck it up America.
