Incredibly honored to have just been selected as a member of the @milwritersguild.bsky.social . Big thanks to @kdahlstrand.bsky.social for her support and encouragement.

Great post by new Guild member, Matt Armstrong: mountainrunner.substack.com/p/pardon-the...

Are you a new or experienced writer with a military background or focus? Whether your work is creative (memoir, fiction, poetry) or more analytical/scholarly in nature (policy analysis, journal articles, etc) - there's an awards category for you here!

I've just been accepted into the @milwritersguild.bsky.social. I'm honored by the opportunity to serve through this organization via the written word and by collaborating with fellow military writers. #WriteFightWin

Been a week. Last Sunday, I encouraged a friend to check out a fav Renoir while he was TDY as I unpacked the Degenerate Art exhibitions in 1937 Munich. I also broke my kneecap, but then I was invited to join the amazing @milwritersguild.bsky.social. Guess I should write about some war art now.

If you are not following Connective Tissue, I highly recommend it. The discussions on belonging and connecting resonate with me deeply, and usually from a place of sadness and loneliness...which means Sam Pressler and crew are on to something... connectivetissue.substack.com/p/how-cities...

If you're looking for engaging, quick reads for the holidays, recommend member David Dixon's "Black Sun" series! www.daviddixonwrites.com/the-black-su...

Great to see former board member Pauline Shanks Kaurin (@queenofthinair.bsky.social) make the @warontherocks.bsky.social holiday reading list. A well-deserved honor for her great book, "On Obedience"!

A great resource from @warinthefuture.bsky.social for understanding conflict. Thanks for including @milwritersguild.bsky.social on the list!

"The Hunt for Red October set a new standard for military stories that continues to influence authors who aspire to Clancy’s level of authenticity narrative mastery, and hope to use fiction to plan for the future of war." Would love to see what others think! #MilSky

The Guild is gearing up to welcome new member applications beginning on 1 Jan 2025! We welcome all writers - new to the deeply experienced - that are looking for a community that address topics tied to the military, veteran issues, and the profession of arms, broadly conceived.

With the influx of folks here, I recommend these great folks that write on military affairs…and are members of the @milwritersguild.bsky.social.

Today we’re highlighting long-time MWG member KR Paul. Kay is a prolific writer, focusing on speculative fiction that blends the adrenaline of military thrillers with the gritty, magic laden drama of urban fantasy. We look forward to seeing Pantheon 3 soon! authorkrpaul.com/books/

“understanding and having a systemic, strategic and well-led approach to adaptation is something that can give a nation, or alliance, greater power in both peace and war.” @warinthefuture.bsky.social @milwritersguild.bsky.social

My latest weekly update is now available at Futura Doctrina. This week, I cover the North Koreans going to fight #Ukraine, the Israeli attack on Iran's missile facilities and as always, I recommend five great reads. mickryan.substack.com/p/the-big-fi...

What’s everyone reading today?

Do you write? Do you draw contemporary lessons in your scholarship with an audience in mind of military leaders? Jan 1, 2025 the application window opens for the Military Writers Guild.

Here's something that members might be interested in: "Make Peace or Die: Honor the Fallen explores the life of Marine veterans & Gold Star Families in the aftermath of war, incl personal stories that highlight the brotherhood forged on the battlefield & the indiv battles fought upon returning home"

Great meeting of our board today - lots of solid programming coming in 2025! Look for an opportunity to join the MWG beginning 1 Jan 2025...and to submit for awards shortly after. militarywritersguild.org

Highly recommend this great piece by MWG Board member, Holly Hughson.

Recommend those working in the military writing space consider applying for the William E. Colby Military Writers' Award, presented by the University of Norwich and the Pritzker Military Museum & Library. Application window closes 31 December. www.norwich.edu/campus-resou...

Looks like another great book is coming soon from @warinthefuture.bsky.social

My regular update on the war in Ukraine, and competition in the Pacific, is out. It includes readings on modern conflict from Foreign Affairs Magazine Engelsberg Ideas Brady Africk Frank Hoffman & others. mickryan.substack.com/p/the-big-fi...

Block writing on calendar. If it needs to change, I have to move it somewhere else. I also get reminders. I also generally have a rough task for each session. Reading, outlining, discussing writing w co-authors etc all count. I had small kids when I started on TT and it was only thing that worked.

I wrote about Van Jackson's new Strategic Studies course with some help from Alanis Morrisette. open.substack.com/pub/bafriedm...

Louder, for those in PME: “Strategic studies is not overly obsessed with Clausewitz and Sun Tzu, strategic studies is overly obsessed with ‘Clausewitz’ and ‘Sun Tzu’: false caricatures that still dominate the strategic studies conventional wisdom.”

The latest edition of The Big Five, with my top weekly readings on military and national security affairs, is now available. It includes articles from @WarInstitute @ForeignAffairs @washingtonpost & @NavalInstitute mickryan.substack.com/p/the-big-fi...
