"If you don't know your history, you may he doomed to repeat it." ... they got him back in. And here we are again.

New at Can We Still Govern: Trump hates DEI and loves unitary executive theory. @johnadearborn.bsky.social traces one of rhe first early articulations of the theory in the Reagan-era assault on affirmative action, featuring a couple of current SCOTUS justices. 🧵 open.substack.com/pub/donmoyni...

Gosh this woman deserves an award from historians everywhere.

Tragically relevant to our Nature article on misunderstanding the harms of online misinformation www.nature.com/articles/s41... - harms may also be greatest among Fox viewers in the tails of the exposure distribution who already have extreme views but are inspired to take real-world action

Wow. I cannot imagine a documentary that would be of greater interest to me. The timing is... insanely right. Premiere is 6/27/2025 at 9pm ET www.pbs.org/wnet/america... via Maddow

one thing we are seeing very clearly is that the public does not like "masked goons kidnapping people off the streets" as a general policy and if the reconciliation bill passes, it's hard to overstate how much money they have allocated to exactly that things are going to get very ugly

So, a Fox personality calls for ICE to go to Dodger Stadium and then it happens a couple of days later. Our leaders now just getting their marching orders from right wing media.

When Dobbs came down, the media rightly saw it as the culmination of a decades long effort to eliminate abortion rights by the conservative legal movement. When Skrmetti came down, the media blamed trans people and not that same conservative legal machine. It's the same court and lawyers.

they want everyone who doesn’t conform to their beliefs about how someone should live their life to die it’s not subtle

One thing I've noticed following news closely for 20 years now is that any time we have occasion to look closely at police behavior, we find incompetence. They don't prevent crimes, they don't solve crimes, they suck terribly at their actual job. There are exceptions, but that is the rule.

If you are too young to remember the Iraq War, you'll hear "no one protested" and "no one knew they were lying." Millions of people knew they were lying and protested. The press not only did not want a record of mass dissent; they did not want a record of mass knowledge of lies.

Sports was one of America's most accessible forms of entertainment. Now it's paywalled, splintered and sold to the highest bidder. Fandom isn't being nurtured. It's being mined. For @nytopinion.nytimes.com on on the state of sports, and what it says about America: www.nytimes.com/2025/06/16/o...

Holy fuuuuuuuuck

One of the reasons it’s important to explicitly condemn right-wing terrorism, and not just all terrorism, after a right-wing terrorist attack is that it might help people understand that the vast majority of political violence in the US comes from the right.

They hate science and academia but still want to claim their legitimacy

This is what fascism looks like - using a conspiracy theory about a dehumanized outgroup as a pretext for seizing political power and wielding arbitrary authority. What you read about in the history books is happening right here, right now.

This is huge. The Trump administration wants to vastly expand the practice of shipping people to random countries they have never been to before, and are now making this part of a threat; either the countries accept taking third country nationals, or they get banned from visas.

This is serious, rigorous analysis and it should change the way the media has been covering these protests. These were, in the aggregate, *massive.*

Reuters reporting that Israel wanted to assassinate the leader of Iran but the U.S. vetoed the plan. www.reuters.com/world/middle...

Correct. This was an easy test for media outlets and many of them failed horribly. No need to give them yet another chance.

We can, you know, shift public polling on other issues, too, which is why centrists’ immediate pivot to “toss trans people under the bus” was both dumb and immoral. It should tell you everything you need to know about their “allyship” when they will turn on you the moment they perceive an advantage.

The MN murderer attended "Christ for the Nations" college in Dallas. That institution was founded by a Cold War era white nationalist and Christian nationalist conspiracy-obsessed preacher named Gordon Lindsay. A thread on Lindsay. bsky.app/profile/seth...

One important difference being that the Republicans know how to harness the energy of their ultra-ideological flank, while the Democrats spend incredible amounts of energy and money trying to neutralize theirs.

They often walk right up to the edge of criminal incitement, but stop just shy of it. In 2009, prior to the assassination of Dr. George Tiller, NAR prophet Lou Engle compared abortion doctor Tiller to a Nazi guard at Auschwitz.

Useful to remember that 300,000 attended the March on Washington and 23% of Americans approved of it. A year later the Civil Rights Act passed.

We should've made a bigger national crisis of someone breaking into Nancy Pelosi's home & trying to kill her husband. But then, we should've made a bigger national crisis about hundreds of someones breaking into the Capitol & trying to steal an election. But then, we should've done lots of things.

ICE agent at a workplace raid: “you guys understand we have a signed warrant to be here” Worker: “And here’s my bag of f*cks”

The tech industry needs serious, meaningful regulation about the things it can sell and how it can sell them, and the neoliberal bullshit of “free markets” has allowed this nakedly harmful software to proliferate, taking advantage of the fact that more people than ever feel alone and desperate

Assassins dress like cops & the secret police wear masks and no ID

I think that the MSM is terrified of being targeted by the Right. It shows in their coverage. They aren't scared of the Lefts and that too shows in their coverage.

Holy fuck

June 14. A few months after coming to power, the regime orders a massive military parade in the nation’s capital, on the regime leader’s birthday - symbolizing the regime’s claim that the leader embodies the nation. This should be anathema in a democratic republic. It’s insulting and dangerous.

One thing that's been striking to me at the Tesla Takedown protests in San Francisco is the first-timers, which is a great sign of growing resistance..... Read this thread, if you're not too busy getting ready for #NOKINGS today.

As a four-decade veteran of the daily journalism business, let me tell you: Every competent political reporter in this country knows that Trump is trying to establish a dictatorship. The industry's shame is that so few journalists will say so, and the ones who do lose their jobs.

El Salvador ratcheted its incarceration rates up to levels staggering *even by US standards.* They currently have a rate more than DOUBLE our 2009 peak. But that wasn't apparently the main driver of its homicide decline. It was a deal with MS13. Or at the very least, mass prison wasn't enough.

Per WSJ, U.S. negotiations with Iran were actually a cover to buy time for Israel's attack. Would you ever enter into negotiations with the U.S. knowing this?

<thread> On the left: June 12, Judge Breyer writing that THE test for whether the US Marines/Guard violate Posse Comitatus will be whether they've engaged in "detaining" civilians. On the right: June 13: See for yourself. Note: The DoD has confirmed the detention of civilian to Reuters.

One of the greatest, most disturbing quotes I've seen in a long time www.nytimes.com/2025/06/13/t...

Trump wants you to believe that this is about Iran signing a nuclear deal - one he tore up in 2018! - but Israel just killed Iran’s lead nuclear negotiator who was telling US television just two weeks ago that Iran was open to a deal.

This will be on the history books as the start of a dictatorship backed by the military.
