MSU's Citizen Planner program offers virtual and in-person courses around the state this spring. The six-session course gets local/elected officials and zoning/planning administrators up to speed on ways they can build and strengthen their community: buff.ly/2UB4TUn

Your NOAA $$ at work! We're funding @tjvmajors.bsky.social at MTU to coordinate a "winter grab" of hard-to-get water samples. Last week, our director @newelllab.bsky.social joined @nicolewagner.bsky.social and her students from Oakland University to collect samples under Lake St. Clair's ice. (1/2)

One of the many projects we can only do thanks to NOAA and GLRI funding!

10 years ago, MISG helped Au Gres residents develop a sustainable vision for their future. That momentum has yielded a new riverfront park with upgraded/accessible facilities, middle schoolers writing grants and planting rain gardens, and a flurry of activity at the local campground: buff.ly/19Rlnmf

Thank you to all of our partners and reviewers who contributed to the #AIS video series we shared last week for #NISAW – we couldn’t have done it without you! You can find the complete #GLANSIS Invasive Species Video Series here at the link:

"What has NOAA ever done for me in #GreatLakes?" NOAA employees in the region help communities become better prepared for challenges like severe weather, coastal erosion, harmful algal blooms, and invasive species www.youtube.com/watch?v=1n6y...

They’re big, they’re hungry, and they’re already in waterways leading to the #GreatLakes. Meet #InvasiveCarp, four very disruptive species of fish – and learn what researchers, environmental managers, and the public are doing to keep them at bay. buff.ly/41uTBD6 #NISAW

Zebra + quagga mussels are small invasive organisms with a big impact on the #GreatLakes. Controlling them is a daunting challenge, but public outreach, regional partnerships, and ongoing research can make a difference in the Great Lakes and beyond. https://buff.ly/41ssjwW #NISAW

Meet the invasive #SeaLamprey, a parasitic fish that has been harming the #GreatLakes for decades – and learn how international cooperation and technological breakthroughs protect native fish from this aquatic vampire. https://buff.ly/4ibfHjg #NISAW

If your pond or lake turns green in the summer, this webinar is for you! Join us/state partners for "HABs 101: Prevention and Management," covering topics like septic systems, nutrient budgets, direct management options of HABs, and more. Register to join on April 2 at 6-8pm:

Felt great to get out in the field for #winter #limnology #GreatLakes-wide sampling on Lake St. Clair yesterday with @nicolewagner.bsky.social as part of a @miseagrant.bsky.social funded project led by @tjvmajors.bsky.social. Just happened to be an all-women team. #womeninSTEM

#InvasiveSpecies transported in ballast water are often tiny, but they can cause huge problems in the #GreatLakes. Learn how scientists, regulators, and the shipping industry work together to control this invasion pathway: https://buff.ly/3Qu3gn6 #NISAW

In a world dominated by smartphones and screen time, @michigandnr.bsky.social aims to reconnect kids with the great outdoors. 📚 www.greatlakesnow.org/2025/02/stat...

We love the #GreatLakes – but #InvasiveSpecies do too. In this video series, we’re highlighting #AIS management + success stories, and showing how scientists, industry, elected officials, and residents work together to protect the Great Lakes! https://buff.ly/4hOQKub #NISAW

This is one of the coolest projects I’ve worked on in recent years — I wrote the scripts to this video series along with my friend and colleague @genevalangeland.bsky.social and did the voiceover narration myself! Multimedia scicomm is one of the most engaging parts of the work we do. 🎥🎤🎨

For #NationalInvasiveSpeciesAwarenessWeek (2/24-2/28), we’re featuring a #GLANSIS animated video series about #GreatLakes #InvasiveSpecies, ft. invasive carp, sea lamprey, mussels, ballast water invaders, + more, and how regional partners work together to stop them. Stay tuned! #NISAW

4-H Great Lakes and Natural Resources Camp needs counselors for 2025! It's an excellent leadership opportunity for youth aged 16-20, and a chance to hang out in the woods with cool natural resources folks. Camp is Jul 27-Aug 2, 2025, at Camp Chickagami in Presque Isle, MI. https://buff.ly/4hNtyMW

Dozens of workers focused on lamprey control were among scores of Michigan federal workers fired without notice in the past week Story by @bridgemi.com: www.greatlakesnow.org/2025/02/trum...

They might look funky, but these globs are native to the Great Lakes and spend their days as harmless filter feeders:

What Is NOAA? - A Primer

Today we're highlighting @NOAA #GLANSIS to explore data on #GreatLakes #AquaticInvasiveSpecies! From species profiles to risk assessments to map data, GLANSIS makes historical data + cutting-edge research on #AIS available to scientists + the public. https://buff.ly/3BvQbkX

Next week (2/24-2/28) is #NationalInvasiveSpeciesAwarenessWeek! Stay tuned as we feature content from #GLANSIS: a database hosting maps, ID, ecology, management, control, risk info, and more for 180+ #AIS in the #GreatLakes region. Learn more here: https://bit.ly/3qg28Vr #InvSpWk #NISAW

Join @miseagrant.bsky.social & friends for HABs 101: Prevention and Management. Webinar will cover what to do when your lake or pond turns green (It's not always a problem!). Tips for preventing and reducing the risk of harmful algal blooms. Apr 2, '25, 6-8 PM ET. www.canr.msu.edu/news/free-ha...

Learn about algae!

"I’ve watched hundreds of lake sturgeon spawning and observed many different species guarding nest sites. But when it comes to nest building, hornyhead chubs rank among the coolest I’ve seen." 🐟 www.greatlakesnow.org/2025/02/i-sp...

Information hygiene request - please circulate & take action. I’m getting bombarded with frantic fragments. Information flow is crucial right now, and every link in the chain matters. This is a concrete place where you can play a massive role in improving transmission. Start with SIFT method:

Nothing says love like a delicious burbot! Not only is it the time of year that burbot spawn (yes, under the ice) but it's also a great time to enjoy some buttery burbot. Simple and fast!

I love hearing my colleagues share their science - today I heard Shelby Brunner from GLOS (glos.org) on NPR talking about partnering with the ice fishing community to collect Great Lakes ice data! GLOS is a non-profit that platforms a ton of Great Lakes data - I use it for buoy data all the time!

#FoodieFriday Skip the lobster and try this instead: Titus Seilheimer, king of puns and champion of burbot, shares his recipe for an easy, buttery bowl of savory nuggets https://buff.ly/40Suato @drfishsg.bsky.social

NOAA includes offices like us! We fund and conduct work like: - hands-on teacher trainings - sturgeon restoration - grad student research - learn-to-fish camps - flood recovery and prevention Every federal $1 that goes to a Sea Grant program reaps $3 in benefits for coastal communities!

“NOAA is one of those agencies that may fly beneath the radar of many Americans, but it is so important for our nation and the future of our home planet.” Can’t get more concise than that…
