So happy to share the news that we’re hosting the FIFTH iteration of Hacking Limnology/DSOS this summer! It will be a fest!

I'm very excited to share that Hacking Limno + DSOS are coming back for the FIFTH time 21-25 July! If you're interested in #machinelearning #remotesensing #modeling #limnology #oceanography, this is for YOU! Registration is FREE + open to ALL! #DSOS25 aquaticdatasciopensci.github.io/registration/

Hydrologists! Ever heard of a Spatial Hydrograph? Our new paper in @agu.org GRL shows that the SWOT satellite can capture spatial flow waves propagating down rivers—something previously only only observable at river gauges: doi.org/10.1029/2024... #SWOT #hydrology #RemoteSensing #EarthObservation

Really good to have contributed to this new study, which uses long-term lake data to detect the impacts of storm events on seasonal phytoplankton growth: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... #freshwater #lake #algae #ExtremeEvents #Windermere @ukceh.bsky.social

🧊🌊Glad to share a collaborative effort with some excellent colleagues: 100 questions to shape the future of #WinterLimnology. We highlight how in situ #Monitoring, #RemoteSensing, and #Modeling can be integrated to advance #LakeIce research. So many questions still open - so much left to discover.

Very excited to have this manuscript out!! During an #NSF Workshop, we brainstormed 100 future questions facing lake ice study today, and how we integrate #remotesensing #modeling #insitu work to get at those questions! @agu.org #OpenAccess

#ASLO25 Students & Early Career attendees! Don’t forget to check out the student & EC field guide with tips for navigating the meeting, highlights of events, & more! The first 5 attendees to bring a completed scavenger hunt to the ASLO booth will get a water bottle. www.canva.com/design/DAGc8...

📢 GLOSSAQUA is out in Ecology @esajournals.bsky.social. Big collaboration w/40+ coauthors led by myself, @chaevangelista.bsky.social & @ignasiarranz.bsky.social. It compiles global size spectra parameters from aquatic ecosystems globally👉: doi.org/10.1002/ecy.... #datapaper #aquaticecology 🌍🧪🧵(1/4)

openRxiv has arrived! We’re thrilled to announce the launch of openRxiv as an independent, researcher-led nonprofit to oversee bioRxiv and medRxiv, the world’s leading preprint servers for life and health sciences. openrxiv.org/introducing-... #openRxiv #OpenScience #Preprints #bioRxiv #medRxiv

Very happy to work in this building next to very talented Forest Service civil servants.

ESIIL @cu-esiil.bsky.social workshop done! We moved forward the projects together via brainstorming and discussion. For my small spinoff project, everyone gave me some hope! We had a wonderful time! @dvm-uvm.bsky.social @mishafredmeyer.bsky.social @rmpilla.bsky.social @rosaliebruel.bsky.social

First day of ESIIL workshop was successful! We started verifying the ZooSize dataset lakes coordinates.. a critical step for future interoperability of the dataset. We will be including HydroLake ID as a first potential match with external dataset. @zzeynepersoy.bsky.social

"Abrupt transformation of west Greenland lakes following compound climate extremes associated with atmospheric rivers". This new article in PNAS by Jasmine Saros and colleague Vendy Hazuková is pretty striking www.pnas.org/doi/full/10....

Uncertain future Why are models so unsure? Computers should think. To develop the next generation of models, we couple process-based models with deep learning. These hybrids integrate buoy data to better capture complex ecosystem dynamics! doi.org/10.1029/2023... @hydrobert.bsky.social

Excited to share video abstract of our new Nature Sustainability paper highlighting the unappreciated link btwn lake eutrophication & climate change via enhanced emission of methane. Check it out! 🧪@steps-stc.bsky.social @sustainablep.bsky.social www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvZK...

Underrepresented undergraduate & graduate students in STEM majors! Apply soon for the US DOE Mickey Leland Energy 10-week summer research internship on minimizing env impacts of fossil fuels & industry while working to achieve net-zero emissions. Geology students needed! orise.orau.gov/mlef/ ⚒️ 🧪

🔁 🌊 DEMYSTIFYING CARBON CYCLING IN FRESHWATER LAKES A newly refined mathematical model is capable of predicting carbon inputs & outputs for lakes around the world. Kudos to @isabellaoleksy.bsky.social & her many co-authors! 👏🏽 Read our story: https://buff.ly/3C9p4Ra

Do you do #remotesensing of aquatic environments, but you want aquatic surface reflectance data. Well, we processed the entire #Sentinel2 record for #AQUATIC surface reflectance in the Contiguous US. You can now access those data from Amazon Web Services for FREE! registry.opendata.aws/usgs_aqr/

First pair of #WARR talks in 2025! On hot water, wild fire, thermal habitats across the US, and data-driven + process-based models. Alison Appling from USGS + Xingyuan Chen from PNNL Register here: psu.zoom.us/meeting/regi... Past talks here: www.cee.psu.edu/events/women...

Are you interested in what USGS and EPA are doing to understand nutrient dynamics across the United States? If so, consider registering for the FREE webinar on how EPA+USGS are "Creating a U.S. National Nutrient Inventory". Details in the link! asu.zoom.us/webinar/regi...

As we head into 2025, and northern temperate lakes start to freeze, be sure to check out our manuscript on the environmental and societal consequences of lake ice loss! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Are you interested in trying to forecast ecological variables?🔮 Or want to teach some key forecasting concepts? Our #open-source, R-based, tutorial materials are available via GitHub, along with a short paper at #jose jose.theoj.org/papers/10.21... @careylab.bsky.social @cboettig.bsky.social

A study of 2.9 million rivers worldwide reveals large shifts in global river flow patterns over the past 30 years. The results emphasize the critical yet changing role of upstream rivers in flood dynamics and the far-reaching consequences for both natural and human systems.

What a gorgeous, impressive array of Open Data for understanding how earth is changing! Bravo!

A 92-year record of ice phenology is helping show how lakes worldwide could change in coming decades, thanks to new #AGUPubs research from @isabellaoleksy.bsky.social, @instaar.bsky.social and @richardsond.bsky.social.

This paper is incredible: one year of SWOT data gives us a much better picture of global ocean floor topography than all other data ever collected. And this will only keep getting better with more SWOT data. This one result may justify the cost of launching SWOT. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Here’s another post of the Limnology! Starter Pack in case anyone needs it. go.bsky.app/Qv3DLZ6

Hello again, everyone! I've just moved to new science world (Bluesky) from the Twitter world. I'm happy to see many limnologists/ecologists all over the world again. I'm still leading the long-term monitoring of Lake Kasumigaura, and working on the impacts of climate change on lake ecosystems.

I created a Winter #Limnology starter pack - please let me know if you'd like to be added (or removed)! go.bsky.app/UnKfRfA

Paradox of the Plankton indeed… and the paradox of the meiofauna etc. is it that there’s different rules for small things,or do we just not understand the autecology of small things and how they might niche differentiate what they do in terms of ecological function? 🤔

Published today: our paper on the ~100 year ice record on Mohonk Lake, a mtn top lake in upstate NY. Ice is forming later, and variability in duration and ice clearance has increased substantially. Notably, recent years have seen intermittent ice cover. bit.ly/mohonkWinter
