Air traffic controllers are required by law to retire at 56. It is a high-stress, high-intensity job that requires intense focus. The retirement rules are there to keep us all safe. This fucking guy has no clue what's he's doing.

You don't have to "craft" anything, you let trans people use the bathroom they want and you ban creep behavior. That's already the policy in most public bathrooms in the US and has been for decades. Cis men pretending to be trans so they can assault women in bathrooms is vanishingly rare.

Maybe we weren’t meant to wake up and read 20 terrible things immediately.

there are really two stories about Trump's transformation of the electorate: (1) he came to dominate the GOP electorate on the basis of racism and ethnonationalism (2) he has gotten over the top in general elections by exploiting the cognitive pecularities of those low in trust and engagement

There’s an ongoing discussion on this site about why the left and liberals have trouble going into coalition and I think a big part is elected Liberals do shit like this

Almost no convergence in the timeline on which movies people liked Gene Hackman best in, decades of variety and excellence to work with

Please look up the influenza epidemic of 1918-19 to understand that the CDC not selecting strains for next year’s vaccines sets the stage for a public health calamity that will, without doubt and at bare minimum, catastrophically and directly impact people you know. This is a five alarm fire.

The Girl Next Door indisputably has a banger soundtrack and I was like 10 when that movie came out so don’t u dare call me geriatric

Horrifying but essential reading from @marisakabas.bsky.social www.thehandbasket.co/p/government...

Can I get a flu shot in another country? Asking for a friend. His name is I.

shout out to whatever highly paid dem consultant said we weren’t allowed to call these guys weird

Undocumented immigrants paid about $26 billion per year into Social Security, even though they will get nothing out of it. They subsidize citizens to an extraordinary degree. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/13/b...

said this before and i wasn't exaggerating: RFK has the exact personality type of the kind of person that, in a different sort of regime, oversees mass starvation.

The first measles death in the US in a decade -- the tragic, preventable death of a child whose parents chose not to protect them with vaccination -- should spark an immediate nation-wide campaign to ensure all children are protected against preventable diseases. Anything less is unconscionable.

trump take egg

Again, folks seem not to grasp how much this is a total collapse of the Constitutional order. A random private citizen is running the "Cabinet" meeting of POTUS & the Principal Officers of the Executive Departments, & going around unplugging large portions of the government. And we're all just 🤷‍♂️

Elon Musk, who has said the beneficiaries of federal spending are a "parasite class," runs businesses that have pocketed $38 billion in taxpayer-funded subsidies, loans and contracts www.washingtonpost.com/technology/i...

I think if I had this much leverage I would demand more than "Let's reassert what the law already is." The demand should be to eject Elon and his teens from the government. They're enormously unpopular what's the problem

Bezos, worth over $200 billion, is doing reply bait posts. Nice reminder that wealth can’t buy dignity

Who are these 10 million people with $5,000,000 USD to simply dispose of on a residency permit and never see again? Do they exist in those numbers outside the rich tapestry of his imagination?

Brave to @jeffstein.bsky.social, WaPo's chief economics correspondent, for not wasting any time in stating what must be stated. Hopefully the first of many.

I shouldn’t have woken up this morning.

The job of the government isn’t to “produce federal revenue” the job is meeting the needs of the people. Refuse to engage in a debate about the profitability of providing people’s needs through public resources.

A couple of thoughts: - We already have a similar program, the EB-5 visa, but that requires investing $500k or 1 million in US businesses and creating jobs, not just buying in with cold hard cash. - Trump can't do anything like this without Congress. The president can't sell green cards. Period.

I am deeply tired of being led by ppl who have such crippling levels of narcissistic delusion that think that they are analagous to Jesus

one of the most insane things i have ever read

I would take this more seriously if we didn't elect the most extreme president in modern history a few months ago over a Dem that almost exclusively campaigned to centrists.

Like the trolley problem, but there is no-one on the other tracks, courts are telling you not to do it, but you still choose flip the switch to kill large numbers of people.

checks out

this is a dril tweet

oh cool I’ve been meaning to learn anxiety

we’re watching elon musk trying to run the government like a business by being that shitty boss everyones had at one point in their life and i hope this is an evergreen example of why “running the government like a business” might be the dumbest ideological statement out there

trump destroy economy

Let’s fuckin’ goooooooo. Down to 301 at posting.

Yeah, that’s kind of the entire issue at hand.

The point of the Guantanamo camp was never that some immigrants were too dangerous to remain stateside. It was to *give the impression* that such dangerous immigrants existed and had been detained — which is exactly how Guantanamo was used after 2001.

That everyone outside your own political base isn’t “real people” is a very succinct summation of populism’s core premise. It’s not about some nebulous notion of representing the masses, it’s about claiming the power to decide who counts as “the people” with rights and legitimacy.

In honor of the Andor trailer out today, I today repost my greatest online achievement: The Andor Characters as Dril Tweets series. I'm going to put them out as I get spare time over the next couple days, as I'm going to put alt text on them too. Starting with the man himself CASSIAN ANDOR

Idiotmobile in its natural habitat (illegally parked in front of a fire hydrant).

this is the closest the fascists will come to admitting that nobody on their side knows how to tell a joke

The most comfortable people in the world (in the history of the world?) have made themselves insane on the computer

I’m *deeply* in the bag for Andor but I thought the new trailer was kind of a huge letdown. Odd music choice and pacing. Still hyped to watch but it felt like a fan edit.
